This is a ridiculous article. There are plenty of non-rich people who are frequent fliers and/or fly business class because of business travel.

They're maybe not the 1%, but they aren't the majority, either.

I flew a lot for work, but we didn't fly business class, and because of the way our tickets were purchased, we weren't frequent flyers either.

So... yes, some people who aren't "rich" fly business or frequent flyer because of their work. And plenty of people working are flying coach.

My guess is that it's only jobs at a "certain level" where the tickets turn into business or first class.

I have a friend who travels a lot for business, but it's all regional, so her company always sends her on Southwest, therefore she has elite status with Southwest and gets to use the fast lanes.  I think there are a lot of people like that.

Oh, and I've started following several airline points blogs, and after making point earning a focus, I've flied business class internationally once, but I have two more business class international flights booked, plus one to Hawaii in business class, and I didn't pay more than the economy fare price.  I don't think anyone actually pays for those seats.

Well rich people are never terrorists. Cough...Abdulmutallab...cough...

Can I say with all the traveling you do, I am MORTIFIED they make you fly economy?  I do travel at my office and I would have a natural fit if someone who traveled the distances you do, did so in economy.  Nothing would make me happier than you replying telling me I had it wrong.

Yeah they do. I book those seat on the regular. As a leisure Business Class traveler I get good deals because I am able to book 2-3 months in advance and watch out for the sales. However there are plenty of business travelers without that luxury. I have booked a crapload of tickets costing well over 10k without breaking a sweat.

This is my favorite.  He has several bloggers that he links to from time to time.  He's the one I check regularly.

You have booked those for yourself with your money, or you mean you've done that for yourself or others with company money?  To me, there's a huge difference.  I don't doubt that there are people in business class who are in seats that we pain for with actual money.  I just doubt very much that there are many people who fly in business class in seats booked with their own actual money.

OK I misunderstood when you said no one paid for those seats because they certainly do. However yes for the most part those who pay for a full fare Business Class tickets have a business footing the bill however the same can be said for the most expensive economy tickets as well.

  • Security itself should have nothing to do with business class. And it doesn't. But how you get to it? Give me a freaking break. This author is ridiculous. The leads he took in e first few paragraphs alone were insane and his tone was eye roll worthy.
  • The outrage in this article is laughably cartoonish given the tepid nature of the issue. I certainly hope no one protesting the wealth divide plans to die on this particular hill.

Nope. Economy. All the way. If I'm lucky I do enough flying in a year on a single alliance that I get upgrades to first on domestic flights I take for personal travel. I have never gotten an international upgrade despite having gold or platinum status. My flights are often "humanitarian" fares that aren't upgrade eligible and sometimes don't even allow me to accrue mile :(

  • I don't fly that much myself - probably 4-5x per year and always economy/coach.  While I might be envious of those that get to jump to the front of the line, I can't get worked up over it like others are as long as they are subjected to the same screening process.

  • It is a perk.  To not be screened, you have to give over a lot of personal information...not just because you fly a lot. Is this a weird class warfare-like issue for people now?  So don't care and am happy for the perk that I often avail myself of when I travel.

I was just going to add what Zoe said about family lines. My airport is a Delta hub. Disabled people and families with children also get to go through the special fast security line. It's not just rich people. My DH is also another anecdotal non-1% elite frequent flier in business class. This just seems like a way to make the worst part about flying (security) better for the airline's best/most frequent customers. It makes perfect sense to me. I don't understand being annoyed by it.
