Photo: Miami Heat Wear Hoodies for Trayvon Martin

Powerful stuff.

Florida teenager Trayvon Martin was shot to death by a neighborhood watch volunteer named George Zimmerman in late February. Martin was unarmed, and his only ?transgression? at this point seems to to be that he was young, black, and wearing a hoodie when he was killed.

Because of Florida?s ?Stand Your Ground? law, no charges have yet been brought against Zimmerman, a man who is by all indications legitimately crazy.

To protest the killing of Martin ? and the fact that Zimmerman is a free man ? various ?Million Hoodie March? protests have been held throughout the country. Now, the Miami Heat are symbolically joining the protest.

The above photo was tweeted out by LeBron James earlier today, with the hashtags #WeAreTrayvonMartin #Hoodies #Stereotyped #WeWantJustice. According to the Palm Beach Post, James had been planning this for a few days. We should also point out that the only reason Mike Miller isn?t in this photo is because he wasn?t traveling with the team at the time.

The Heat are the first collection of high-profile athletes to publicly take a stance on the polarizing case, and since they a) play in Florida, and b) are perhaps the most visible team in America right now, this photo is an important one.

This. Except it was several tears.

  • This story just makes me so angry. So angry. this boy's life is over because of that effing animal.

I like this. I like seeing them take a stand and showing support.

Whoo, ditto. I may or may not be sniffling as I type.

  • Awesome show of support!

There is not a day that has gone by in the last couple of weeks where I don't cry over the loss of this young man. I have 2 bi-racial grandchildren and I just keep thinking that this could happen to them someday. My heart breaks for this family.

  • I like that photo.  I like that they took a stand on this issue.

Unpopular opinion: part of the reason I really hope that Zimmerman is eventually arrested and found guilty is because I am afraid of the kind of post Rodney King verdict type riots that would ensue if he isn't.  I have a cousin who lived in LA during that time in a rather unfortunate area of town and she was raped.  She was 14.  She felt it was racially motivated, that the person (a black guy, that she might have even known) was kind of getting back at white society through her.  Anyway, this whole episode is very, very sad without the race component.  The fact that it is so obviously racially motivated makes it really monumental on top of it.  I mean, I don't want to make that poor boys death about something other than his death, you know? But it is.  If Florida doesn't do what's right here, the entire country will pay a price.

  • I read the legitimately crazy link and while I agree dude is off his rocker and racist, I have serious doubts he used that phrase. It's just not a common reference to black folks now and I would imagine most white people born after 1970 have no idea that it was once commonly used to refer to black folks.

If dude were older and/or some methed out skinny aryan brotherhood/confederate flag waving good old boy, I'd be more inclined to think he said it.

That phrase still has some traction in IN.  Like middle IN, not down by KY.  I remember hearing it in high school in the '90s and I'm sure I've heard someone who thought they were hilarious use it even as an adult.  I KNOW I've heard it in Chicago.  I don't think of it as antiquated at all.

  • Yes but it's one of those words you say in what you think is "safe" company, like all your other racist friends or company you think would feel the same way. I can't imagine it's something you say on the phone to a police dispatcher.

  • I am very sad to report that the particularly vile epithet Zimmerman used to describe Martin is still very, very common in the Midwest among people of all ages.  I don't hear it out here, but our black population is miniscule.  AZ hates on Mexicans instead.  (j/k.  Kind of.)

Okay, I will admit that I haven't listened to the tapes because I can't stand the thought of being able to hear that boy dying in the background, but he didn't say it "to" the dispatcher, right?  I mean, he called Trayvon a c**n. Or am I wrong?  I could see someone still calling someone else a c**n, these days.  When I first heard that he uttered a racial slur, I assumed it was the n-word, but I wouldn't rule out anything else.

  • Wow.
And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.

If that's what he said, then sadly no, it is not uncommon. I was born in '79 in the northeast, and I am familiar with the term.

Yeah, this is what I thought. And from people's description that listened to the tapes, it was pretty obviously that was exactly what he said.

    Lurker Loo

I've heard people my age (24) say it in my hometown (Illinois) when I visit, in public, without a care of anyone overhearing them. They also use the n-word. I heard a number of adults say both words growing up there. I have no doubt some of them would say it to police without thinking twice about it.

Sadly, it's not as uncommon as you'd hope.

  • Powerful photo and there will always be one reason now to like LeBron.

As to Zimmerman stating the C- work - I believe his inhibitions were down (it's been noted that at least one expert in this type of thing said he sounded drunk) and he dasm well said it.

  • Just another reason I am team Miami HEAT! 305 all day :)

Really? I can see it if you seem to have a crazy vendetta against blacks. Which is evident when you call 911 about 40 times.

  • The problem is being a racist jerk isn't illegal, and from what I have read, he may not have broken any Fl laws.  Sad but true.

Pretty sure shooting someone for walking while black is breaking even FL law.

But what if it was "self defense?"  I'm not saying it's right - not saying that at all.  I am just thinking that's why he hasn't been arrested.

I realize that is the excuse for why they have not arrested him, but there is a big difference between that and saying he did not break any laws. He may be claiming self-defense, but the details of the case overwhelmingly show that is patently untrue. So yes, he did break the law. Even the stupid shoot first ask later FL law.
