*** Cheny got a heart transplant

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-57403969-503544/***-cheney-receives-heart-transplant/

Former Vice President *** Cheney received a heart transplant on Saturday, his office announced.

A statement from the former vice president's office said Cheney is now recovering in the Intensive Care Unit of Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., outside of Washington.

The statement said Cheney had been on the transplant list for 20 months and did not know the identity of the donor.

"Although the former Vice President and his family do not know the identity of the donor, they will be forever grateful for this lifesaving gift," the statement read.

    surprise he had one

  • And now for the real issue... How the F did a 70 year old overweight man get a heart transplant?
  • I can't wait for the jokes on the late shows Monday night.  So much material.  I, for one, hope he makes it just so the heart doesn't go to waste.

I have nothing against the guy but really, a 70 year old?  I know he's been on the waiting list for a long time but I thought 70 was the absolute cutoff.

Where's the 38 year old father of four who's just behing him on the list?  Or the teenager who's never been able to be normal because of heart problems.

My dad was 68 when he died and the only thing that would have saved him was a heart/lung transpland which he refused to have.  I begged him but he said it would be unethical when there were so many young people who hadn't even really lived yet.  Hadn't gotten married, had children, tried to reach their goals.  He felt that he had had all that and they joy that came with it so give someone else a try

    Ding!

A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • I just don't get it.  How did he get one so quickly?  Don't other people wait years, people who do not have the history with alcohol that he has, who are younger and, dare I say, more deserving?  I don't honestly know how potential recipients are ranked, but there is some sort of ranking system, right?  I understand the way the world works, but really...doesn't the fact that he is in a high-profile position make this even more open to scrutiny?

  • Blood and tissue typing are generally done before getting on the list.

    That's all

  • So is it just first-come, first-served?  And age is not factored?

I know that NYU Medical Center had a 70 age cut off for their private patients.  It's not one doctor, it's a whole team that makes the decisions.  I know nothing about other medical centers.

Funny INOVA was the hospital that sent my father to NYU Medical.  Perhaps their team wasn't developed yet/

  • Rich and famous people always get transplants expeditiously. Remember the baseball player who got a new liver in record time? I am not surprised I am just used to it.

I think I heard twenty months or so which gives me even greater pause because if you can wait twenty months I would say there had to be someone ahead of you and makes me question the severity of his illness.  I suck and I don't care.  This fries my fritters that he got a heart with his age, and rumors of a drinking problem simply because of who he is.

Or it could be that I just hate the man.  Whichever.

I would eat a raw onion if he met every point of criteria for this heart.

  • I cant believe he had to wait at all. I mean, this is America, where you don't have commie universal healthcare because that would lead to waiting lists etc. You have insurance, so everything is brilliant, all of the time, and no one waits for anything.

Or did I misunderstand the healthcare debate?

No kidding.  Personal feelings should factor into who does and doesn't get a heart transplant....criteria be damned.

  • Kinda makes you not wanna be an organ donor if you know an old cheney like him is going to get one.
  • Assuming he went through the same checks as anyone else, I have no problem with him getting a heart.  I have no idea what the guys' overall health status may be, and I honestly cringe at the thought of "70?!? No heart for you!".  Maybe that's just because the members of my family tend to live to 90+, so it seems like an arbitrary cutoff.

It wasn't a heart TRANSPLANT, it was a heart IMPLANT.  Duh.

Also, I thought the cutoff was 65.  You know, unless you're rich and famous and can bribe people.

  • Weird-  CBS Sunday morning just called the heart transplant "the gift of an anonymous donor" - wtf does that mean??? Someone put in his/her will that if they get hit by a truck that their heart would go to Cheney?

I wasn't aware of the age cutoff dates people have been talking about. Interesting. If there is anyone who would game the system in getting a new heart it would be D.I. C. K. cheney.

please to see the link posted. That is an arbitrary age for MAY DENY. Misinformation abounds, it seems.

70 is incorrect, though a number that is factored in. http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/health-topics/topics/ht/whoneeds.html

I had a high school math teacher who's husband was on a waiting list for a heart transplant for years.  He was a minority (Indian), and my understanding is that good matches are harder to find for minorities.  Anyway, once his heart condition was discovered (this was close to 15 years ago, so I don't remember what it was), his doctors knew he would eventually die, so they put him on the transplant list.  A match never came up, and while he did live for much longer than 20 months (I want to say he lived for 4 years), he did eventually die from his condition.  I'm just saying that part of the story is not something I find suspicious at all.
