Wait, where is the Mad Men thread?

Re: Wait, where is the Mad Men thread?

  • I don't think there was one.  Everyone was too inthralled with the fact that Mad Men is now in the groovy 60s.

  • Well I'll start then. I wasn't crazy about it. It just felt...off to me. I'm not sure why. It felt like a different show for some reason.

I agree.  It wasn't as good as I was hoping.  The best part was when Harry Crane was joking about Megan's party performance without knowing she was behind him.

But it was clear they were setting up the season.

Roger knows it is his kid, right?  Or does he think Joan aborted and then got pregnant?

    And Don's apartment was gorgeous.

  • I think that's on purpose.  Mad Men has been happening while we've been gone.  And, like any other situation, when you stop looking at something and come back to it, it's completely different.  The difference between 1965 & 66 is marked, and that shows in the episode.  I'm looking forward to the rest of the season.

  • Yeah, I agree it felt very setup-ey, but I just watched (again, for like the forth or fifth time) The Suitcase, and a season premiere is never going to have that stand-alone weight.

Still, there were so many things I loved, mostly Roger ("there's my baby!", "why don't you sing like that?" "why don't you look like him?", and mocking Megan), but also Pete walking into the column and Peggy.

I also love that Cooper is back at the agency w/o explanation, and just as relevant as always.

I'm looking forward to seeing Betty next week.

  • It did feel just like any other episode of MM, but I still loved it. I kept thinking DO NOT throw Don a surprise party. Just don't Crying I don't remember Megan being all sexy last season. I also thought that Joan told Roger she was pregnant last season, I remember her discussing the dates with someone. They are totally setting it up so that her husband is killed in Vietnam. He was never a likeable enough character to keep around anyway.

  • Lane's interpretation of Megan's dance in front of Joan was hilarious.

  • Yup Roger knows, she told him it couldn't be Greg's. He also said she could keep it and it "wouldn't be his". A bicycle is a nice gift from your mom's boss.

When I rewatched the series, I was thinking how Greg Harris is about the only truly unlikeable character. Even Betty has moments when you're supposed to feel for her. I wonder if something didn't play the way they wanted it to, if the rape colored his character more than they intended. Anyhow, it doesn't seem like them to have him predictably killed off in Vietnam either.

  • I think Roger thinks she aborted. He has got to suspect, Seems like Joan is trying to pass the baby off as her H's but I just don't get how she pulled it off.  The dramatic irony in that scene w/ roger was great. And pete walking into the column. lol

  • I generally liked it but there was a little too much Megan.  I was fine at first seeing her in the morning at their apartment, but then it was Megan at the office, Megan working with Peggy, Megan and the party, Megan Megan Megan.  I'm guessing there is a reason here but too much IMO.   I loved seeing Joan and the baby and I think it will be interesting to see a "working mom" perspective from that day and age.  Especially since she's married *gasp* to a doctor and shouldn't have to work!! (sarcastic - what others would be thinking in that era)  Loved the Pete and the office storyline.  I'm more intrigued about the Trudy situation too...  She looked horrendous at home but cleaned up nicely for the party.  I really enjoyed the last scene where they were accepting resumes..interested to see how they work that out.

  • I wonder if they are trying to get us sick of Megan so we can see it from Don's perspective if he leaves her. Did anyone else notice the weirdness with Sally at the beginning? I was surprised that Betty didn't make at least a quick appearance in this episode too.

  • I dislike the fact that I am starting to feel more sympathetic toward Pete. It is good storytelling, though. Trudy is such a power player, which I still love.

Megan was definitely more sex than last time we saw her. I didn't love her as much as I did at the end of last season---I loved her interactions with the kids, particularly Sally, and was kind of hoping she might be more "Maria Von Trapp", as Don so nicely put it. Seeing her as copywriter made me dislike her (team Peggy!).

The scene with Lane Pryce and Joan was very sweet.

  • I watch on iTunes where they have Wiener's commentary.  Apparently he wanted to make sure the audience found out who Megan is so she's in it a lot.  The white carpet getting ruined symbolized how home life gets messy when you bring work into it.   Also, he wanted to show for the first time Don being happy and not caring much about work anymore.

She went to visit him on base during training right before he deployed, right after she found out she was pregnant.  So he thinks that's when she got pregnant.

I agree with all of these things. I love Trudy. Chick is smart as hell and knows how to work a situation. It is fun to see that side of her because you would assume Pete would have a total dormat of a wife. Trudy runs the show and is a million times more charming and manipulative than he is. She is just sweet about it.

I don't really like Meagan. She just seems a tad desperate which is par for the course for Don's girls I supose. Also totally team Peggy. Meagan just gets to skip in and be the pretty thing on Don's arm whenever she sees fit. She certainly is not putting in the time that everyone else is and that annoys me.

I love Joan and I love Joan as a new mom. She still has it though!!!

  • To me, the writing, the pacing. the camera work all felt different. But maybe it's just been too long since I watched the old episodes.

I loved Roger in this episode though. Not sure how I feel about Megan, except that she's the polar opposite of Mrs. Draper #1.

Anyone watch the Good Wife last night too? The actor who plays Peggy's boyfriend was on it (I had to pause and say, wait a minute isn't that...?)

  • I liked this recap: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/bastard-machine/mad-men-spoiled-bastard-episodes-304059?amp&amp

Helped explain why the epi was the way it was and made me appreciate it more.  It's not that I didn't like it, but it was definitely a set up for what's to come.  I guess they can't just jump in with Don angst after a long hiatus, although that would have been fun.  I'm sure there is plenty of that to come!  One of the things I love about the show is that one week I love Don and the next he does something to piss me of.  I can't wait!  lol

  • Also maybe it is because I haven't gotten laid in 10 weeks due to pelvic rest but :fans self::: I loved the last scene with don's pants undone while he laid with Megan on the dirtied carpet. Hot

    totally agree.

    love trudy.

    megan is annoying.

    love joan.

  • I thought it was interesting how Peggy/Trudy became Don/Betty - right down to the house.

I don't know how I feel about Megan. A few times I thought - wow, she is so NOT Betty - her makeup is off sometimes and the first outfit she wore (polka dot top, skirt with racing strip and black kitten heels) was a hot mess. The party and the dance - soooo not Betty. It's obvious she is struggling with their relationship (the porch scene). I guess...I'm not sure what to think about the final scene with her and Don.

Roger was on-fire. So many hilarious one liners - I was dying. And yes, he absolutely knows that baby is his.

Lane - what is up with Lane? I have always liked him...until last night. Now, not sure.

I was having trouble placing the time period - are we saying this is 1966? I couldn't tell - was thinking 67.

This was my thought, too.  They had to just show where everyone was, they had to cram 8 mos worth of events into two hours (well, actually considerably less than two hours given all the commercials).

I wasn't crazy about the direction they've taken Megan in, though. I really liked her at the end of last season.  I liked how "normal" she was, and now she's like this sex-addled vixen with a rape fantasy.

Roger had the best lines, as always and I LOVE the tension between he and Pete.

    It's 66.

We left off in October 65 and this started on May 31/June 1 66.

    Wait, how do you know?

I thought it was 67, since the youngest Draper kid seemed around 2 years old (and wasn't he a baby at the end of last season?).

and i don't like Pete at home in the burbs. it looks like trudy got her way. and i was thinking that she is a horrible betty b/c even if betty was a shitty cook, she at least always had dinner ready.

No, Carla always had dinner ready.  I wonder if they can't afford a housekeeper.  For shame.  Trudy married penniless aristocracy. That's an awkward place to be in.

It's about 7-8 mos after the end of the last season if you do the math on Joan's baby (Kevin?).  Maybe a little less.  I thought they would leave a bigger gap, but since the show as off the air for 18 mos, they probably felt like leaving a year and a half's worth of details about the 60's out of a show about the 60s, was too much. Plus, I think they want the show to end in 1969, so with three more season left, that's one for each year, so yeah, I think it's supposed to be 1966.

  • Oh, and again, doing the math, there is no way Roger doesn't know that baby is his. At the time that Joan was going to get the abortion, she was 7 weeks late (IIRC), which means she was roughly 11 weeks pregnant, almost out of her first trimester.  For Roger to think that was Dr.McRapist's baby, he would have to think it was possible for a baby to be born 3 mos early in 1966 and live, which it wasn't.

  • lol - ok, I guess I probably didn't remember where we had left off (I haven't re-watched since it went off the air 18 mo ago).

The only other thing I have to add was - Peggy being handed the baby and also Pete's reacton to Peggy wheeling the baby carriage into the office were priceless.

  • I thought the Campbells' house was the Drapers' from Ossining until Pete turned on the light.

Apparently the screener sent out to critics had a song in the credits that was from '67 and they went nuts over the inaccuracy. I think Weiner did it on purpose to leak the real date, since there's no way he would miss a historical accuracy point.

On a semi-related note, I've had You Don't Have to Say You Love Me stuck in my head all night and day, and A adores my singing.

On my God, I know.  If that show goes off the air without some kind of resolution to Peggy's baby, I will be piiiiissed.  Of course, staying true to that time, she would have given that kid up for adoption and that would be the end of it.  Even if she thought about the baby every single day, she'd never see him again.
