Hunger Games

I saw the movie today and read the books over the summer.  I would really like to know how someone who hasn't read the books liked the movie or what the thought of it.

Re: Hunger Games

  • MH hasn't read the books but he really enjoyed the movie. So much so that he wants to read the books now.
  • DH and I were both bored (I read the books, he did not)
  • While watching the movie I found myself referring to back stories a lot.  This made me wonder if the movie was too vague a story for people new to the series.  And it really seemed to me like they didn't delve into characters' relationships enough.

  • DH hasn't read the books.  He was confused in a couple of parts, but I think he was distracted by all the teens who were in the theater with us.  They were really attached to Rue and one openly sobbed after she died.

  • DH & I saw the movie this afternoon. Neither one of us had read the books. We both thought the movie was good and we didn't find it confusing in any way.
  • DH hasn't read the books, he liked the movie.  He had a few questions, but nothing big and confusing.  My BIL and I read the books and we both wondered how anyone who hadn't could understand what was going on.

  • h and i both read the books and thought the movie moved so quickly. obviously there was a lot to do in a short amount of time though. i wish the relationship between katniss and gale would have been conveyed a little better/more.

  • DH and I went to the midnight show on Thursday. I liked it (didn't love it) and he thought it was "eh".  I don't think you get to form the same connections with the characters in the movie. For a 2 1/2 hour movie it seemed to move really quick.

  • I haven't read the books (I had no idea there was more than one) but I enjoyed the movie. There were a few things that I thought were confusing but not enough to be distracting (Like why they kiss their fingertips and hold them up in 3s). Part of me wants to read the books now but the other part of me doesn't really get the hype or care.

I thought the movie was good, but the premise was too morbid for me. I probably won't see the other movies. I MAY read the first book just because I saw the movie, but I don't understand all the love for this series. It seems a little dark to be considered a young adult novel to me.

I do like Katniss as a character, though.

  • DH didn't read the books and he enjoyed the movie.  He did have a few questions, but that's because he over thinks things and some of his questions wouldn't have been answered even if he had read the books.

This is me to a capital T. I actually never heard of the book or even saw previews for the movie. I went with a large group of co-workers on Friday afternoon, otherwise I probably would not have even see it. Then again, I have only been to the movies twice in the past 6 years....

ETA: I was a huge LOST fan and it kinda reminded me of it.

  • DH and I saw the movie yesterday and we both liked it a lot. We haven't read the books and we weren't confused. I do have to say that The Hunger Games reminds me a whole lot of Battle of Royale.

  • I saw it today -- I've read all three books.  I really liked it...I think it was about as good of an adaptation as possible.  I am glad they ditched the whole twist about the dogs being based on the DNA of the other Tributes...I thought that was stupid and distracting in the book.  I was really disappointed with the other two books -- the end of the second book and the whole third one.  I had a little trouble telling Peeta and Cato apart in some of the long shots, but otherwise I didn't see much room for confusion.

I'm about halfway through Book 3. Book 2 was good, not great like Book 1, but Book 3, I have really had to force myself to keep picking it up and reading. It's like the author ran out of steam or something after Book 2.

  • I have not read the books yet, but am going to....as soon as it is my turn at the library! I normally like to read the book first but my son wanted to go so we went.

5 of us went and none of us read the books. We all enjoyed it.

I liked that the dogs were built off their DNA.  It was just a mind game for the Tributes which I thought was an excellent move and made things interesting.  Although, I do see how it would have been lost in the movie.  They just weren't able to build up the majority of the Tribute characters to convey the idea.

Getting through the 3rd book was a struggle for me, as well.

Book 1 sets the stage for what happens in book 2 and 3. It's a morbid concept (the hunger games) but it's not actually the main focus of the books. So, if you were able to stomach this, you would be fine with the rest of the series. Book 2 has it's moments, but book 1 is the worst, on purpose. They are trying to get you to realize how terrible the government is, and how extreme they are willing to go to control the rest of the cities. The books are more focused on the power-play of the government and the reactions they get. You start to see this in the movie when district 11 stats to riot after Rue's death. In the book, this doesn't happen yet. Instead they all chip in money to send Katniss bread.  (District 11 is the second-poorest district. This was a big deal for them. Usually only members of the Capitol have enough money to spare to send gifts. That's why gifts weren't flying everywhere.) So, yeah. Sorry that was long-winded. It has it's violence and gore, but it also has a pretty decent theme, and I'm surprised honestly (pleasantly I must add) that so many younger kids DID get into the story because of the politics in the book.

I felt the same way about book 3. It took me forever, but I finally finished it over the weekend! I probably need to read it again, because I'm sure I skimmed through some details, because by the end I was like "who is that again" with some of the new names and I was lost as to how some people died.

  • I went to go see it on Saturday with H and one of our friends. I had read the books, but neither of them have. They both really enjoyed the movie and want to read the series now. They had a few questions, but nothing major. Plus they both giggled a lot at how eccentric the people of the capitol looked so I had to explain that to them.
  • I read the books, DH didn't. He liked the movie and wants to read the books.

The only thing that really bothered me was that they didn't explain the mockingjay which is pretty significant in the rest of the books.

Me too! I was wondering how that would look, but glad they didn't do it.
I read the book on Saturday. DH and I left for the theater as soon as I finished. He has read all 3. I thought it was true to the story, but thought the characters could have used a little more development. But, it's a lot to fit into 2.5 hours.

  • When Thresh lets Katniss live, he says he's doing it for Rue. Why would he know about Katniss and Rue, and how she honored Rue's death, when he was elsewhere in the arena at the time?   I can't remember if this is explained in the books better.

In the books I believe he asks Katniss if she helped Rue. There was more of a conversation, if I recall correctly.

Yah, it is explained better in the book. Katniss tells him that she buried Rue with flowers and that District 11 send her a loaf of bread. So, Thresh feels he owes it to Katniss to let her go one time.

I guess ine movie you are supposed to know that he overheard Katniss and Clove (I think it's Clove, right?) when Clove talks about how Katniss teamed up with her.

Yeah he comes right as Clove is saying how she knew they teamed up and she was part of the team that killed Rue. Thresh then grabs her and she tried to pretend she didn't just say that, and he said "I heard you!" and killed her, and then let Katniss go, for Rue.

  • Probably the biggest change that I felt *didn't* work had to do with the whole sick-Peeta thing.  I think they should have made it clear somehow that the soup was drugged and Katniss gave it to him knowingly.  Otherwise, it's just like..."Oh, soup, that's kind of a random waste of a sponsor gift!"  I also think they should have kept it (or made it more clear) that Peeta's problem was a systemic infection and he needed an antibiotic.  Making his "medicine" the same kind of miracle-burn-healing-cream we've already seen just made it seem like Katniss could have saved a little from her pot and skipped all that drama.  All they had to do was have her feel his forehead or something and then have the medicine be a syringe.  I guess they wanted him up and walking/fighting in record time, but it bothered me.

This is also a very tiny nitpick, but I also think there could have been more of an audience reaction when Peeta reveals in the "talk show" that Katniss is the girl he loves.  I think if there had been more of a "gasp/awwww" it would have made it clear how important that maybe-faux-maybe-not romance was in terms of keeping them alive with sponsor gifts.
