1) most people are at least a little bit racist. On a subconscious level if nothing else.

2) most white people who are a little bit racist are deeply uncomfortable with the fact that they could possibly be a little bit racist.

3) this deep, but subconscious discomfort makes them try to constantly prove that they aren't racist by pretending that race doesn't exist or isn't really an issue for anyone. Non-white people who are a little bit racist don't really succumb to this, because as non-white people they constantly see and experience race even if they are kind of racist.

That's my half-baked theory anyway

This goes along well with the theory that a jury of George Zimmerman's peers will figure out exactly what happened to Trayvon Martin and do the exact right thing.

Oh, and the new Snarky Brides occassionally tries to have political and intellectual discussions and most people are woefully misinformed. It's a big reason I started posting here - I couldn't find the kind of current event discussions I wanted because I kept having to explain to people things like, "Socialism is an economic system. Democracy is a political system. They can exist in harmony." So whatevs, I'm an elitist a$$hole.

Oh! My point was that StephJ in that thread has a husband who is biracial. She therefore knows everything about living in a biracial world and/or what it is like to be black. I once had a discussion about how Obama, while, yes, technically biracial, is percieved to be a "black man" because race is a societal construct more than a physical construct. Which Obama himself has said - since society has viewed him as black, he considers himself "black." But, you know, her husband feels equally black and white and is comfortable with white people, so anecdotes FTW! Basically she, BlueEyed and Maratea have completely different political beliefs than I do and that's all they see me as - someone whose beliefs they can't comprehend.

Also, just connecting the dots. I've met Steph+J, at least I think I have. That's why dawnmarie was connecting me to her about older MSP Knotties. I remember Steph having a biracial fiance too. What I remember most, if I'm right is her wedding venue and that they had board games.

I can only imagine what they're chatting about now.

I have read the referenced posts and I have some questions for the wise women here:

1) Where is this bubble this Tara creature lives in where Hoodie=Thug? Now I freely admit I'm about as far away from a fashionista as one can get without joining a religion that advocates some sort of interesting headgear, but isn't the current market for Hoodies basically the entire under 80-year-old market (and that is negated for ex-coaches and Hip Grannies)? I'm as middle class, privileged-white, early middle-aged as you can get and I can't think of anyone I know in that market segment that doesn't own a Hoodie. My pushing 70-year old, retired Minister Aunt has several. And if I was walking to the store (or home from a store), in FL, in the rain, I'd probably be wearing the only Hoodie I own, and even with the hood up. Am I a thug and just don't realize it?

2) Did anyone else notice the "raped by taxes" comment buried in the mess by another poster? What amount does one need to pay in taxes in order for it to be deemed "rape"? And does the Taxman at least use protection to avoid future little deductions?

3) What is the break even point on number of kids where paying for catastrophic health insurance becomes the less risky option for the three-uninsured-babies-in-three-years lady?

4) And most importantly, where would one obtain a TARDIS cookie jar?
