something for scars?

I just had my gallbladder removed..all my bandages were taken off today. While I won't use anything right now on the scabs, what would you recommend once it scars over to minimize? I have four cuts, 3 on my abs, 1 on my right side.

Is there a cream that is really good at reducing scaring?  Or is time the best thing?

Re: something for scars?

  • Honestly? I had a cholecystectomy a few years ago and didn't do anything special for the scarring, and the only two of the scars are really noticeable at all any more. The two on my right side (I had two there, one beneath my belly button, and one right beneath where my bra strap would be), are nearly invisible (one is entirely gone, and I have to ACTIVELY search for the other one). The one beneath my belly button is there, but hard to see. The only one that's really noticeable at all is the one beneath my bustline, and that's because it was raised.

I don't know that I'd do anything different if I had it to do over again - time seemed to fix things for me.

  • I had a bunch of endo removed laproscopically last february. Honestly, they looked horrible right after the bandaids came off, and for a long while afterwards... but now a year later, the only one that is still pretty noticiable is the one in my belly button. I just compensate by wearing a shiny belly ring... noone even know I have had surgery until I point it out. I did put some vitamin e and mederma on mine, but I wasen't diligent about it like they say you should be. My pharamacist did say not to put anything on it for at least 3 months.

  • great advice! I was also told to not use anything for 3 months. I just hate having three, big to me, scabs going down my abs. I will give it time and the  look into these recs...
  • I've had my gallbladder removed, my appendex removed, and a surgery on my stomach - all laparoscopic.  I really wouldn't even worry about the scars.  Mine are pretty tiny dots (maybe the size of a small pea) that are a little lighter than my other skin.

  • Just be grateful it's on your ab (covered by your shirt) and not in a visible place like your face/neck. You can try Scar Away which is a silicone strip you wear on the scar.  If you are really that bothered by it, you can cut the strips to fit your scars.  Do not put it on scabs, the scars must be healed.  But really the laproscopic scars will fade away on their own. Just keep it moisturized.
