OK let's fantasize...if you won the lottery

Let's say you won $150 million, after taxes, lump sum. What would you do? What would be the first thing you'd spend money on?

I'd buy a small airplane for DH because that's always been his dream. Then I'd buy a forever home for us, plus a brownstone in Manhattan.

Neither of us would work at a regular job, but I would write the books I've always wanted to write.

Re: OK let's fantasize...if you won the lottery

  • Boring answer, but I'd sit on it for a few months, after paying off student loans and any other debt. I wouldn't want to make rash decisions and change my life irrevocably, only to realize I totally effed up.

After that, we'd buy a house. And awesome old Victoriana nd fix it up awesomely. Possibly a vacation house, too. And new cars. H just wants an Outback, but I'd like a Mercedes R350 or a Volvo. And a 1966 mustang convertible as our third car.

And pay off our siblings' student loans and our parents' mortgages, and probably contribute to houses for our siblings, too.

We'd contribute huge amounts (over $1 million) to my high school and H's undergraduate school.

Then we'd take a really sweet month-long trip to Europe.

Then we'd have kids. And they could go to posh private schools so they could go to posh colleges and win at life.

Then we'd probably start a gastropub, serving craft beer and vegetarian food.

    Then we'd travel more.

  • We've talked about this before.  We would:

    1. Pay off our student loans.
    2. Pay off our parents' mortgages.
    3. Buy a house.  Not sure where.
    4. Buy a second house in Austin, go to SXSW each year, and sponsor a showcase.

    Beyond that, who knows.

But I would be resigning this hellhole via Post It Note.  :)

  • I asked my 7-year-old this after we bought a few lottery tickets last week. He said he wanted to live at Disneyland for the whole summer if we won the lottery. Actually sounded like a good idea at the time.

  • I'd pay off all our debts first. Then we'd buy a bigger place to live, but not too big since I like living in smaller spaces. We'd set aside money for retirement and for future kids' college education(s). Then we'd make sure our parents were taken care of in retirement. Then we'd help out our siblings as much as we could (there are 7 of them combined, and most of them have spouses). Then we'd upgrade our season tickets to better seats. Then we'd do some traveling.

Have I reached $150 million yet?

  • 1st thing I would do is contact my attorney.  I would want to set up trusts, ensure it was redeemed in the best and most discreet way (let's say with a corporation name versus my real name, etc).

Then I would put fully 50% into my long term accounts with my broker (so $75 million) for DH and I, I would put 30 million in a trust for DS and 30 million in trust for baby #2 taht is on way, with the remaining 15 million, I would set up a trust for our 2 nieces, probably 3 million each and start a gifting program with some of our family of giving 10K per year to some of our closer family and giving 1 time gifts to others, probably in the tune of another 5 million in total.   which leaves about 11 million for "fun".

We would likely sell our current house and rehab an older one that we found near our families.

We would probably buy a 2nd place in Buenos Aires, and then likely just use the rest to augment what we buy today.

PS-- I would also offer our nanny about triple what I pay her now if she would travel with us and work from 6 AM-10 PM M-Th and baby sit on Saturday from 5 PM until 10:30 each week.

  • I would apply to grad school to study some fluffy topic such as literature's impact on hip hop, pop culture, Kanye, Biggie, 2Pac and Michael Jackson, then quit my job, grab my dog and go.

I'd get a chef and personal trainer to help me free the body that lives inside my fat.

I'd get some Beyonce-quality lacefront wigs.

Then I'd invest the principal and live off the interest.

  • Practical shyte: pay off the house, pay off the car, buy new car with cash.  Fully fund school for B from now thru college.  Start TTC Thing 2, fund school for it.

Completely reno house.  In my dreams, this would push out the kitchen to bring more light in and give more space.  We'd also build the master suite out over garage, re-do rest of the floor.

Or maybe buy land and build a new house.  Hm.

    Travel. A lot.

  • We fantasized about this with some friends over happy hour this past weekend :)

H would want to buy a house somewhere.  I'm not sure about that plan b/c I kind of don't want to own again.  I would, however, rent some badass vacation homes.  I could spend a month in Aspen, another in a villa on the Amalfi coast, a few weeks at an overwater bungalow in Fiji...

We'd travel.  A lot.  And I'd never sit in coach again.

I go back and forth on whether I want to have a yacht.  I think I'd prefer to just charter one b/c those suckers are a *** to maintain.

A maid (my request) and a personal assistant (H's desire, although I'm not sure what for).

I'm naturally a cheap-ass, so I can't see doing much different beyond that.

  • Pay off remaining debt.

Pay off parent's (mine and H's) remaining debt.

    Buy a house.

Hire lawyers and accountants to help us figure out what we should do with the rest.

  • I would be on a plane to somewhere warm first. Overall, I would sell our current home and buy a piece of property in northern MI and build an awesome house on it and then purchase a home somewhere where it stays warm year round. Plus, I would throw a giant amount of money at planned parenthood and hope they open an office in my small town. Then I would help out friends and family as needed and do some type of budget to figure out how much I need to set aside to live on without having to work. I mainly want a vacation right now Stick out tongue

  • Apartment in Paris.

  • I'd leave mydamn house ASAP, pay to get someone to fix it up and sell the sucker. Then we'd by a nicer bigger home somewhere good.

Then, i think we'd kinda take things as they come for a few years, have another kid or two, evaluate our options. I think what the lottery would *really* give you ( if you invested it properly and all) would just be time. So like, I might just take some time off to have my kiddos and then get into something again when they are school aged.

We'd definitely pay off our loans and give away certain amounts to people and charities  - but you are always gonna need to get a new car every several years of course there is retirement and college to pay for. I could definitely see us working again (and earning a paycheck) - but it might be more like... teaching horse back riding-type work, not sitting in a cube all day.

  • I'd buy an condo in NYC ($1-2 million) and San Francisco ($1 million - my dad would live in this one), as well as property in Guatemala ($250k). I'd pay of our current home, update it, and rent it out., and buy a lake front home (only like $1 mill in my area).

We'd allot specific money to our immediate family. H and I actually got into a fight about this when we played this game one afternoon. He has 6 other siblings, I have one. His family is much less involved in our life as well. So... yeah. My mom, dad, sister and her family would be well taken care of with x amount of money. Anwar's family would get the same amount of money for him to distribute how he wants.

I'd probably buy a house for my bf. Sounds crazy, but she is my rock and she needs to get out of her mom's house. Plus a house for $250k here buys a lot as well. Pay of her student loans, and hire her as my assistant to track our multiple properties and maintain our local one when we're away.

Outside of this, hire a really great financial planner, accountant, etc. Put $100 million in a place where people much smarter and more successful than me know where it would work well.

Is it sad that I'd keep my Mazda 3? I really love it. H would get a new car, though. We'd donate his.

Fun stuff aside from property purchases - furnishing the houses, travel, and a huge chunk would go to the Casa Angelina property to build more houses and get a larger staff to help more kids. I'd finish of the school building, and install new computers. I'd also probably go crazy getting the kids iPads, new clothes, and other fun stuff they only sometimes get to see or use. I'd see about flying some of the kids here to visit where they'd like. NYC, Disney World, Hollywood, Hawaii, etc.

I'd set up a $10k/year scholarship for a few qualifiers that I don't have nailed down.

Also, of course, my church would get a huge chunk as well. A new building, better media equipment, set up a missions dept, food shelf, shelter for women, etc.

  • After doing the responsible things and taking care of the kids etc.

I would buy an enormously obnoxious home on the ocean with Fort Knox security and I would probably never leave.  I would read, cook and bake all day every day and take deliveries from Amazon to full fill any need I might have.

I would stroll our private beach and swim in the ocean at sunset/sunrise and live in a bikini with a wrap.

  • First thing: CALL MY LAWYER.  Ha!  Try to figure out the least obvious way to claim it and have any trusts or tax shelters (? see how I'm talking like I have any idea how to manage that kind of money? ) set up before collecting so that as soon as I got the money, it could go into whatever investment accounts we had set up.

Then:  I would quit this job and set up what essentially amounted to a public aid clinic.  But I would like to create something that was kind of a one-stop-shop and employ a social worker, and various consultants that could also help people get their GEDs and find work...

What I would buy: I would build our dream house probably somewhere in the Carolinas.  I would not pay off my student loans because they are consolidated at 2.4% which evidently is lower than inflation so I'm never supposed to pay them off early according to our current financial planner.  College funds for the kids and trusts that would mature at 20, 30, and 40 yrs of age.  I would buy a status car probably a BMW 7 series and I would get a totally tricked out MINIVAN.  Whoot. Tons of clothes (waste that money) and shoes, a personal trainer, and that tummy tuck I keep talking about.

Who I would give to: my grade school, my church, my husband's church, my kids' schools, Children's Memorial Hospital, my parents (trusts), my sister (trusts), my husband's university, our master's team which is also a booster for a local university, the masters team that we met on that offers reduced rates for students and poor people so they can still swim, my undergrad swimming program (maybe build a pool?), other organizations that are near and dear to my heart probably having to do with foster care and child abuse/neglect prevention.

  • After paying off debt and getting everything all set up with a financial adviser I would fence in my yard.  My wife asked me why I would bother when we would move to new home.  I explained that it would still take time for us to move and in that time our dogs could enjoy the freedom of a fenced in yard.

After the fenced in yard....I would buy DW her favorite car, then do the same for my dad.  I would pay for my brother to travel the world and surf.

  • I can't remember where the article was posted, but there was an article about what to do should you win. It was interesting, mainly don't spend more than 100k before you talk to financial advisers (plural).

If we're just fantasizing: Pay off all debts, pay off all MIL's debts, set up retirement for my mom, new cars for everyone, and then a fabulous vacation.

A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • OH! And I would figure out how to get a date with Idris Elba. I'm pretty sure we are soul mates we just need to meet. Stick out tongue
