Would you let your 5year old do a 1 mile fun run?

Today after ds1 soccer game, he wanted to run on the "circle track" so I let him.  He ran a mile in about 6-7 minutes. The only time he stopped was when he fell and scraped his knee but he got right back up and kept running.

So I was thinking of letting him to do the fun run at one of my up coming races.

So is 5 to young?

  • Your 5-year-old ran a mile in 6 or 7 minutes? If kids that age are allowed in the fun run, of course I'd let him try it.

My nearly-4-year-old gripes when he has to walk the half-mile home from the grocery store when the stroller is too full for him to ride.

He averaged about 1.5min per lap (I only know this because I was recording him) and 4 laps made a mile. He was also wearing cleats and shingaurds.

  • Sure! My bff's six year old ran a 5k this year. Ds and I routinely walk/run a mile (he's 4). I would let him do a fun run if he wanted as long as I could run along with him.

  • If he wants and is able to I don't see why not...then again I don't have a children so there could be some glaringly obvious reason why not that I don't see.

  • Sure!  My DD did a .25 mile fun run when she had just turned 3.  It took her a little over 3 minutes, lol, but even now at 3.5, I think she could do at least a half mile.  I'd want to do it with her, but think she could do it physically (and would have a blast doing it)!  Hope he has fun if he does it!
  • My daughter did a fun run when she was 2. We just ran as much as she wanted, then turned around and went back. She loved it, which is what the run was all about anyways. I say go for it.
  • Wow!  That is awesome--looks like you have a track star on your hands!  If he enjoys it, I see no reason not to let him do the run fun.
  • DS did the 1km fun run with me last year before we walked a 5K charity walk. It was great - they hand out an empty bag at the start and there are people handing out candy along the way. He loved it!

If only I could find a run like that!

  • My kid is 6 (and a quarter, so not six-almost-7). He ran my last 5K with me, but got a little tired around mile 2.5.

I think most 5 yos could do a mile, no problem.

  • Heck yes!  I wish my kids were more interested in running.

  • Well, I just signed him up. He is very excited. So we are going to go get him some decent running shoes this weekend and I will let him start running in those.  (I don't want him using his school shoes).

  • Of course!  My friend's little boy ran the fun run (with his dad) while we did a 5K last year.  I think he was 4?  Now he's doing 5K's with a group at his school.
  • I see no issue with letting him run one at all. I would have gladly run one at that age if my mom raced when i was a kid.

  • I think its awesome. I can drive a 1 mile in 6 minutes!

  • I agree, if he wants to, then I think it's great.  That is insanely fast!
  • Absolutely! DD (age 5) has done a couple fun runs, and is running another in a couple weeks. She prefers the sprint/walk interval technique ;) Sounds like you have  little speed demon on your hands!

  • I don't have children, but I don't see a problem with him doing a fun run if he wants to. I'm hoping that my future LOs are into exercising/being active, too.

  • Why not?  I'd have let either of my DDs do it at that age, if she wanted.  In fact, my 5 year old went out in the jogging stroller with DH the other day and apparently hopped out at some point and ran - according to DH - about 1.5 miles of the distance.  In UGGs, no less, which didn't thrill me but 1) she insisted on wearing them, and 2) I had no idea she was going to run or that DH would actually let her do it.  None the worse for wear, though (the kid or the boots).

  • I don't see why not. Starting in Kindergarten, we had to run a mile for the Presidential Fitness Challenge, or whatever it was called back then, so it doesn't seem like a totally foreign concept.

  • Absolutely. My older daughter does them and started doing them at 4. She is more of a sprint/walk runner. :0) My younger daughter (3) does the little runs like the 100yd dash with me.

  • I was trying to get my dd interesting in doing a fun run. She asked if she could go run with me one night, I bought her a cute little running skirt and everything so we could match. we got about 1/2 a block before the dandelions were more intersting. lol

  • I see no problem in letting him run a mile.

He ran a mile in 6-7 minutes? Really?  Are you sure the track was 400 meters and not yards?  If so then you should enter him in the USATF Youth National Championships Sub-Bantum age group.

For their 1500 meter times add approximately 20 seconds to get a 1600 meter time (4 laps on a 400 meter track).

  • I don't see why he can't.  I'd just make sure to run with him.  But like a pp said there be some glaringly duh reason not to let him run but I can't think of any.  And I do have a kiddo.  Smile

Yeah, the track was a 1/4 mile track and 4 laps made a mile.  He just turned 5 but he loves to just run.  My H says that he just maybe a track runner and not to get my hopes up for a baseball player.

  • Absolutely!! My 6 year old started running 5K's when he was 5. He asked me if he could run with me on the way to one of my 5K's. I said sure just to see what would happen. He ran the whole darn thing, I was shocked. I thought for sure I'd be carrying him after a mile or so. Since then we've probably run a dozen or so 5K's, it is a lot of fun!
