@ Can I ask for prayers/positive vibes?

My oldest son (4.5) is having surgery next Tuesday for a communicating hydrocele.  From what I understand it's a pretty easy fix, but I'm still completely terrified of my baby going under.  I'm worried about how scared he is going to be when he is all alone in a foreign place with doctors poking and prodding him.  It makes me feel sick.  He also has food allergies and I am worried that there are possible allergies to medications we aren't aware of and could be a problem going under.

I "know" that my fears are slightly irrational and that everything is going to be fine, but I'm a mom.  I can't help but worry.

Can you please pray for a safe surgery and recovery for my baby and also keep me and my husband in your prayers as we try to overcome our fears in the coming days?

TIA!!

  • Lots of prayers and good thoughts. I'm sure he will be in very good hands!

  • Absolutely thinking of you guys. I know how terrifying it is to let your kiddo go under.

You should see if your hospital has child life specialists. They are fabulous. They will talk to you and your kiddo about any fears you might have, will explain what it will be like and will give you materials and some little toys and such. Liliana received some bubbles and stickers, as well as some hospital-related items to help her get accustomed to it. Band-Aids, face mask, the plastic face mask they use to put you under, tubes, plastic syringes, etc. It helped a great deal, and it helped calm all of us down.

She also explained the procedures that the hospital has and what we were allowed to do. I was allowed to sit with Lili while they gave her an oral sedative (they might not do that since your son is older). I also was able to carry her to the OR and watch as they put her under. Would that help you feel a little better? I was able to see how sweet the nurses were with her. One held her hand while they put her under and gave her a kiss after. It made me feel so much better.

    Hugs, mama.

Oh my goodness.  I would feel so much better if I could hold his hand or watch him while he is back there.  I don't really know our hospital policy, but I think I will call today to find out what to expect that day so I am not crying like a crazy woman when I can't do what I want.

Thanks to everyone for all of the positivity.  I am feeling a little better already.  :)

  • Absolutely - you got them.

I agree that you should be bale to be there for when he wakes up and maybe even goes under. They don't want him freaking out upon waking up alone anymore than you do.

  • Just a question I would ask is making sure that the anesthesiologist isn't a rotating one.  Sometimes surgeries are done in a large suite and the anesthesiologist rotates between patients.  I flipped my you know what when babycopz had surgery and threatened to leave the hospital if we didn't have reassurance that the anesthesiologist would not leave my childs side.

  • Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I was called down after her surgery so that I could hold her while she was waking up.  That was really nice. She was upset, but she calmed down right when I got her and held her.

  • Sorry that you are going through rough days. I hope that everything goes better than you could even imagine and he is up and running around in no time. I will be thinking about you and your family.

  • Prayers for you and your little one.

I had to have tests done as a kid that required putting me under, while they wouldn't let my mom go back they gave me an oral sedative in the prep area while Mom was with me so I was out before they took me away. So even if you can't go back ask about other options for how things can be handled to make it easier on both of you.

Also does he have a blanket or lovie, I was always able to have my bear with me, I'm sure they took it away when I was out but I had it when I went to sleep and when I woke just like going to bed.

  • Of course!

My oldest had to be put under when she was 3.  Scary stuff.  But they let me go back with her until she was asleep, and that meant the world to me!  She didn't handle the waking up well...she freaked out and ripped out her iv, which made her bleed and made her freak out more, so if you can be there when he's coming out of it, I HIGHLY recommend it.

  • You might be able to be with him until he's under - ask the anesthesiologist if you can. They also might let you into the recovery room as soon as he starts coming around - check with the recovery room staff.
  • It's perfectly normal for you to be afraid, but just remember that kids are more resilient than we think.  My niece has had multiple surgeries in her short life and I swear it's usually harder on her mother and my brother than it is on her.

Anyway, I'm keeping you and your family in my thoughts.

  • You got it!

Both our hospitals had social workers who were awesome for this kind of stuff, I would start by finding them, and they should be able to help you navigate.
