What words do you find offensive?

What words or terms make you cringe?  I mean real words or terms that are often used, not something like "pink unicorns".  The exception is when the word is being used in intelligent discourse, prayer, etc.  I think it will be interesting to see that what is offensive to some may not be offensive to others.   I'm NOT saying we should stop using these words here or IRL.  We are all free to do as we wish.

For me:

  1. N word.  No matter who says it.
  2. Faggot.  My gay friend says this all the time.  It bugs me
  3. Queer.  Same as above.
  4. Jesus F Christ
  5. God damn it
  6. Retarded.

Re: What words do you find offensive?

  • 1. N word

    2. Faggot/fag or gay.  Queer has a lot more actual uses so that depends on context.  "Queer eye for the straight guy" definitely did not offend me though, so I think someone has to be using it with real vitriol for it to bug me, and if they wanted to be jerks, they'd probably just say fag.

    3.  Retarded (this one especially gets me personally as my niece is both physically and mentally disabled)

  • Same as you with 4 and 5 removed.
A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • Stealing your list:

    1. N word. No matter who says it.
    2. Faggot. My gay friend says this all the time. It bugs me
    3. C**t
    4. P***y - when referring to someone that is weak. I especially hate when women use this word to call a man out on being less "manly".
  • Tits.  That's about it.  It's not offensive but I have always hated that word.

    Retarded

    Gay (as in stupid)

  • Retarded only bothers me when directed at people. Like calling someone retarded. Calling something, like a shitty policy retarded bothers me none at all.

I can't deal with the word faggot. Even typing it out pains me. If it wasn't for the fact that the f word phrase is owned by fuuk, I wouldn't even type out the word.

Fee Fie Foe figgah, I hate that word to the core of my being despite finding Chris Rock's sketch on the difference hilarious. And no, I make no distinction between the n word and the bastardized "taking it back" form of it. People who use it just sound ignorant which is amusing given that's what the word means.

I also don't like any of the similar terms for people of different ethnicities. If I hear someone utter the word wetback, k*ke, ch*nk, etc, I just assume you're a bigot.

So yeah, basically the bigot words. Everything else, whatevs.

    F*g

C*nt (I don't find offensive as much as the word makes my ears bleed because it's just so incredibly distasteful to me)

I guess that's it. I don't find "gay" or "retarded" offensive, but I do find them distasteful personally and so I don't use them.  But I guess I don't get offended when other people use them.

  • Like others it will depend on context and truth be told if the joke is good the word probably won't offend me Wink

    1. N word

    2. Fag

    3. Gay - obviously only when used negatively

    4. Retard

Yeah, that's probably it.  C*nt doesn't bother me as it isn't about the core of who someone is - like skin color, mental capacity, and sexuality.

My brother does the same thing. He even takes pictures of himself throwing up gang signs and wearing blue bandanas. He's such an idiot and it makes me want to stab him in his face. Lord I hope he never finds himself somewhere other than whitey mcwhiteville. He'll be dead.

You know... I think this might be part of the problem in the other thread with how people were viewing offensive terms.  You can use offensive and distasteful interchangeably in the fact they both can mean something unpleasant or displeasing.   Offensive doesn't only mean attacking.

To me when someone says JayEffCee it's not that I think they're attacking me for being a christian... it's unpleasant for me to hear.  KWIM?

  • I'm seriously trying to come up with any...

I don't cringe, but I "tsk" at the use of:

    - retard

    - faggot

    - n-gger

I tend to favor Trey Parker & Matt Stone though, so there's that.  I just would rather waste my energies on taller mountains.

But like I said before, the words that I find offensive and those I find distasteful are different.  I can find something distasteful, and kind of roll my eyes and "whatevs" it.  But when I get offended I'm going to react differently.  If someone said "that's so gay" I'd think they were probably immature and roll my eyes.  If someone was like "only n*ggers do that" I'd probably punch them square in their f*cking mouth.

    lol im totally *** kidding.

it all depends on the context. Just from our offend offs on here, I know that I could throw down a bunch of offensive shits with several people on here and laugh and laugh. Subjectively it is all offensive but I know they are not cross burning racists or women beating misogynists.

It's when someone uses degrading words in a hurtful way does it become offensive. I would wager that the n word is 99% offensive in its usage but retard and gay? No.

I'm not asking about others.  I'm asking what words YOU find offensive.

I get the distinction you're making.   I'm saying there could have been confusion in that thread based on terminology... as in I'm now saying JayEffCee is just distasteful to me not offensive... well unless it was used purposefully and maliciously towards someone.  Like JayEffCee you're an idiot.

And FTR I was never equating it to the n word I do in fact see the difference between the two.

  • The n word, any sort of homosexual or transsexual slur (esp. used as a slur).

Add to that list a lot of sexist towards women slurs. I don't care when women use them, especially in a lighthearted context but even more "seriously", but I really hate when men use them against women and will usually tell a guy to STFU if I hear him using a gendered slur. Lol I know, it's hypocritical but oh well.

So I should add the word homosexual to my original list.  Not offensive all of the time but can be used that way.  I prefer queer and gay over homosexual.

Me too.  I also find Hobo super offensive, too, when discussing homeless people.

Hobo calls to mind a Depression-era homeless dude who hops trains. I would never call a homeless person a "hobo." Not because I'm offended by it, but because it would just seem kind of arcane, I guess. I don't think I've heard someone described as a hobo recently.

Weird story, though, my brother used to call people hobos when he was in high school, maybe? Like, "Really, you're wearing that out of the house? You look like a hobo." And we would make fun of him for comparing everything to a "hobo." Anyway, my parents and I went on a trip to visit colleges and my brother was away at camp. We had to stop at a hotel in the middle of nowhere off I-90 in Ohio, and the only restaurant was the hotel restaurant, which, for some reason, was called the Hobo Cafe. Their menu actually had a picture of a Depression-era train hopper. My dad, embarassingly, asked the hostess if he could take one of the menus because, and his exact words were, "My son is fascinated by hobos."

What I was trying to say is that I don't cringe at queer, gay, or homosexual when used in context.  My original list, to which I was adding homosexual, had to do with context.  Like when the very far religious right uses the term homoSEXual and emphasizes the SEX to make it all dramatic and scary.  That irks me.  Homo irks me.  Homosexual, appropriately does not.  There are other gays though that will disagree and hate all use of the word homosexual since it has a negative past.

    Ditto. Its all about context.

I wouldn't get riled up over JFC, but I do realize that other people find it offensive so I try not to use it personally.
