I'm wondering if the sh!tstorm would have erupted if the OP had said something like:

"I know some of you don't think it means anything, but personally it bothers me when some of you use religious profanity.  I'd really appreciate it if you'd try to say something else, instead."

I think the sh!tstorm erupted because it wasn't a personal request, but a condemnation of the behavior as offensive and rude.  If you're being offensive, you're doing some wrong.  Using a racial epithet isn't rude and offensive only around people of that race:  it's rude and offensive in general, because it's wrong to do, because of all of the history behind it.  That's the key difference IMO between that and the swearing.
