Class photo called ?offensive? and ?degrading?
Re: Class photo called ?offensive? and ?degrading?
They do not look the same, not a bit and trust me, I'm aware of what black caricatures look like. In fact, your whole little blurb just now is exactly what I'm referring to. You have this habit of talking down specifically to black folks on black issues as if we'd never heard of them before.
I wish I could remember the context but I do specifically recall getting into it with you after you tried to lecture me on what it is to be biracial.
I suppose it's possible you are unaware that I am biracial and don't need you to explain it to me but I think it's a slim one at that.
Oh yeah, it was on Barack Obama, you lecturing me on how biracial people are viewed by American society.

What a weird situation. I feel like HAB is right on here--I'm surprised consent wasn't given either implied or just earlier..
Also..it doesn't look like black face just because the child is black..and has a smiling face.
The idea was silly..it would have looked dumb with anything..including the star.
I remember talking about this a week or two ago, but I don't remember lecturing you or even discussing it with you at all. But I apologize if I offended you.
I didn't say, "Well, I'm sure NO ONE in this thread is AWARE of the existance of black face and WHY it is racist." I don't think I implied that at all. I don't think by bringing it up I'm being condescending, but I'll try to be more careful about it.

See, I'm really trying to figure out how to fix this. When I make a statement, I don't intend to imply, "And THIS is the absolute truth." I just want to contribute my knowledge and/or opinion and then I expect other people to do the same? I also like debate and I think if someone IS offended or annoyed by something I say, I don't always pick up on that right away because in my mind, we're just having a discussion, right?
But I know it's a "me" problem, because you aren't the first two people to point it out.
HAB, I don't want to come across as a know-it-all on everything. I really, really like to read and research things on my own. So I glean knowledge from a lot of sources and I like to contribute that as well as my own opinions based on that. But I know it doesn't substitute for actual experience. I can read what people have written about their experience of being biracial, but I'll never actually know that experience. Weirdly, it was hard for me to realize there are things I can't know, but I DO realize that.

And I think the cartoon face they used is a lot better than the smiley face - it's more human, anyway.
My high school used to have individual pics of seniors and classroom pics of underclassmen. On photo day, some jokers turned up in class photos they didn't belong in, or a half dozen class photos they didn't belong in. My stupid yearbook editor scratched out heir faces or drew horns on their head. Real mature. I'll take the sticker, though they probably should have just blurred out the face.
I certainly took her tone as "hey, white folks, here's some information that probably didn't occur to you before you put that dumbass thing on that kid's face". I absolutely didn't take her tone to be specific to black folks. As for the factual quality, she knows what she knows. Here, she knows what turn of the century imagery this reminds her of.
I am specifically referencing times you've replied directly to me in threads. And this is at least the second time if not more than you've quoted and responded to me specifically on the topic.

I think this is ridiculous. It's a cartoon head for a boy that is black. If the child was white, they probably would have used asimilar cartoon, but with white skin.
Then again, I'm not black.
