AW, you cannot be serious
Re: AW, you cannot be serious
Success! I think we should have a "drink when you see 'offended'" game!
Yes,I'm smiling...I'm a marathoner!

DUDE. aw. Really? I mean, really?
This is how I feel too. Like I want to get unbaptized.
And Pagan is an offensive term! It isn't even used by anthropologists or historians, because it is comparable to infidel for the non-monotheistic religions.
For the record, I think the FWP posts are kind of annoying AND I think it's annoying that it's offensive.
I AM JUST SO ANNOYED.
Great, and now AW went and martyred her signature. And here I still, while tooooootally and disrespectfully disaheyzeuschristogreed with her self indulgent butt hurt over the "misuse" of certain words, had some respect for her.
JESUS DIDN'T BACK DOWN, AW! Why did you?!
Lock the thread and close it up now. There's nothing else that can be said that can top this.
RIP LaurierGirl.
Considering AWs signature was still the woman at Jesus' feet when I was on here this morning, I'm guessing this response in the long ass thread was the catalyst:
I'm so glad I finally made it through all these pages just so I could read this line. The irony in the statement is hilarious.
I think AWs new sig was still pretty eyeroll worthy, but that response pissed ME off, and I can say that my faith is nowhere near as strong nor a part of my everyday life like it is for her. FWIW, I'm also on team "sorry if it offends you, but I'm not going to change my wording."

But KA - every religion has a different 'story' - whether you believe it or not is up to you. I mean, Christian people believe/follow different books (well, parts of them) than the Jewish, than Muslim, and so forth. So really, to someone not part of that faith, it IS just a story. And ESPECIALLY to an atheist (though I'm not sure who wrote the italicized statement).
It doesn't have to be taken as a dig. People can appreciate that someone has a devotion to a religion whilst still considering it to just be a story.
I think if you asked most atheists/believers of a different faith, they would explain religion/a different faith as 'a story' that is important to the followers.
Does that make sense?
Lol! Seriously.
Aw, I just wonder ( worry) if this event has ruined your weekend. I hope not and if so. Man, just let it go now. I don't think you can win this one here.
DONT GO THERE! WARNING! DONT GO THERE! THAT WAY LIES DANGER!
There are two absolutely unstateable things on this board.
1. You can never call any religious thing a story or a myth, even if you explain it from your non religious perspective.
2. You can never have an opinion on weight, unless you are the weight you are having an opinion on.

)
And even if you ARE that weight, if your opinion is anything other than pure sympathy, you are self-loathing and have body image issues.

It is tone, Laurier, that makes someone saying story obnoxious. I don't think you have that tone here, but others do. It comes across as dripping with disdain. It is palpable, much like it would be if I were to call an atheist a heathen or whatever is a rude/obnoxious, I would guess.
lol I know a dig when I read it. And well deserved too, so okay
)
Thats whats hard about public message boards - you can't always read the tone.
In my experience, most people referring to another religion/religion in general refer to them as 'stories' - they aren't trying to take away the importance of it to someone, but explain it in a more neutral way.
I think what I'm trying to say can probably be explained but what I will explain to my kids: "Christians believe the STORY of Jesus being the son of God, and Muslims believe the STORY of Muhammed being the last prophet, etc. etc. I wouldnt be trying to take away the significance of any of the beliefs, but as a non-believer, it IS a story about something we just don't happen to believe and thats an easy way to explain it.
but can't most (and i stress MOST) people agree that not every part of the bible is a literal documentation of actual facts? wasn't it practically a unity horse that some of the bible was a recounting of events while other parts are allegories? (and forgive me if allegories is the wrong word. i haven't had any coffee yet and we just finished our easter egg hunt).
re: considering the bible a story:
i don't think it should come as a surprise that people who aren't christian or jewish consider it a book of stories. it's a book. because you (we) believe it was written by god through man doesn't mean we should expect others to do the same or to give it the same reverence we give it. it doesn't bother me if someone considers it a book of fiction because they can believe whatever they want.
i look it at like those books that L Ron Hubbard wrote off of which Scientology is based. i think they're f*cking crazy but that's because i'm not a scientologist. they love those things. we're never going to agree on what they feel about the writings because there is just no way i will ever feel the way they do. will that stop me from calling it a work of fiction? absolutely not. do i know that it would upset them? yes. do i care? no, because no matter what they say, i still hold my beliefs.
Again, tone. Look, I'm not expecting anyone to change or even see it through my eyes. It is just annoying and obnoxious. The end
lol, well, it just goes to show that I felt bad about it, and being a non forgiving type, I don't forgive my younger and more obtuse self either, even if I can laugh at it now
)
yeah, um, i saw your other reply after i wrote that.
reading would have saved me a load of typing
A little off-topic, but now you have me honestly curious. I've never criticized anyone's faIth EVER, I never would. I've certainly never called anything a "story". I've never even participated in threads that bash fundamentalists.
So why is it that if I have the audacity to object to something aw says that I find highly offensive, such as "I just want to tell people how to live" I am accused of having some sort of personal grudge against aw? You did this the other day and while it was mildly amusing, I find this reply from you attempting diplomacy with someone whom you do perceive as having criticized her faith baffling. Forgive me, but it just smacks of a double standard.
I'm sure you'll just say I have some sort of "deal", but this is an honest question.
AW I admit I haven't reas the whole post but are you calling us all pigs? I know you take the bible literally so I'm not sure how else to take that coming from you....
I will go back and read and hope there is an explanation.
Ftr, I don't think Laurier criticized aw s faith so I haven't a clue as to your second paragraph.
I'm going to ditto eclaires in that it really doesn't bother me either when people liken the basis of my faith to Grimms Fairy Tales or the like. I'm secure in knowing and believing the Bible and its tenets to be truth for me and my faith, and I call it good. And as long as I make it clear that's what I believe, job done. Well, except my language and general attitude could sometimes use a sprinkling of holy water... but dammit, I like to be funny!
I should start channeling Brian Regan. Dude is clean AND funny, 100%.
I'm not sure why YOU were offended that I said I didn't believe her apology, or why you interpret that as personal.
Let's look at the the subject title of that thread alone. Not speaking for anyone else, but here's my interpretation: Probably flammable....." tells me she KNOWS that what she's about to say will piss some people off and "..... but I'm going to ask anyways" tells me she doesn't care. That suspicion BTW seems to have been confirmed by this thread.
That first thread had plenty of responses flaming aw that preceded mine, and some more harshly than mine, so your choice to single me out for flaming her is one thing that offended me. The other was your insistence that my statements were irrefutable evidence of some personal grudge. I'm not sure why this isn't obvious to you.
WRT to my last paragraph - I know Laurier wasn't questioning aw's faith but your patient discussion of people using the word "story" just doesn't jibe with your overreaction to my comments, which is where I'm seeing a double standard.
