When did the election become about gas prices?

A la Hugo Chaves.  Gas is subsidized in Venezuela (obviously, also an exporter), so it's like $.25/gallon.

Too bad they can't get other goods very easily.

I'm sorry, but your gas prices are NOT high. Have they been increasing? Absolutely, and I'm sure it's painful. We've seen rising prices here too, and it hurts. But I would kill for gas as cheap as it is in 99% of the US.

I think this is a big problem in the US. Many in the US think they pay too much for food, gas, and services in general. But we are paying much less than the rest of the world. If we were paying prices on par with other countries, maybe we would have those better planned communities, increased public transit, carpools, etc.

I think you have an excellent point. Now - to be fair, the US is a large country geographically, so some of the infrastructure in other countries (European countries comes to mind) WOULD be atrociously expensive in the US. But within North America, cities are not very walkable. Also - Canada is also ridiculously large geographically and we have much higher gas prices and its not an election issue every year.
