So we have decided that it is time to expand our family

So, should we attempt to have child or should we just get a dog?

On the one hand, a child is more portable and will eventually clean up after its own poop.

On the other hand, dogs don't require a baby-sitter every time we choose leave the house alone and are much less expensive in the long run. I mean, college is not even an issue.

Hmmmm.... Dog or child? What do you think?

I agree with everything that muddled said. You should listen to her. -ESDReturns

  • one of each?

eventually the kid will be able to take care of it's and the dog's poop.

No, no, no. This is not an option. We are "one and done" for certain.

  • Kid. You can't borrow organs or blood from a dog.

  • Right now I'm dealing with the puppy phase and the teenager phase.

I say neither, but if you have to choose one, I vote kid.  In the long run they will eventually/hopefully give back.  I'm still crossing my fingers on that one.

Now this is a plus that I never considered. However, I already have a brother and so does Brad. Is that not sufficient for body parts? He is more likely to be a match anyhow, right?

Kid first. Then in about 7 years or so (when you decide that the kid needs someone to play with so you can take a shower in peace), get a dog. The kid can clean their own poop and the dog's too. Fast-forward 40 years... the dog will be gone but the kid can hire someone to clean your poop.

You do have a good perspective. If dog wins, I will be looking for a dog 2 years or older so that we can bypass most of the puppy stage. Does this change anything for you?

Also, what if I end up with a delinquent child? Then all he will give back is a headache. Or a girl? Yikes!

Well, since I said 'neither', I really would stick to that.  I would still vote 'kid' if I had to choose.  You will need to lock them up when they hit puberty....or buy them a dog to teach them responsibility.

  • A dog will not be around to wheel your azz to the nursing home when that time comes, or to come mow the lawn and help move heavy shiit when you are old and frail.

2? That's 14 in human years. My kid could totally do that. The next Doogie Howser is somewhere in my ovaries.

No, just that the dog is easier in my opinion and experience. I even have a special needs dog and the high maintenance factor pales in comparison (if you have to compare the two) . I read that you are going to try to bypass the puppy stage (a little older dog).

You can definitely have a kid, but that is 9 months of commitment (your body and health) plus the next 18+ years of life.

    This is just my experience.

So, you think I should get a dog (even if it's special needs) because I am too irresponsible to take care of a kid? Yes?

You are right that 18 years+9 months is a long time, but I thought I could just re-home the thing if I got tired of it. I mean, I know someone that did that with her dog after she had a kid. Couldn't I just do the same with a kid? Especially if I follow the advice of srs and get a dog after I have a kid. If both are too much for me, I'll just choose one to keep and one to give away.

Yeah the "this is just my experience" talking about 18 years of raising a child when you're only 5 months in kind of made me wide-eyed.

Just get a nanny and pawn the kid off on her to raise, that is what all the good parents do.

  • If you have a kid and a dog, just have some peace that if the kid bites the dog or something, you can always just take the kid to a shelter or society and drop it off for another family to deal with. Just don't tell them that the kid's a biter, because that may effect their chances.
