Do you think facial masks really work?

I have combination skin (with definite increased oil in the t-zone area in the warmer months). I purchased Queen Helene's Mint Julep mask, but I just don't know if it does anything for my skin? Luckily it is only $4 so I wasn't worried if it didn't work...

I've tried other masks in the past but I don't think it did anything for my skin.

If you have combination skin, could you recommend your mask, and what benefits you've seen from it?

Re: Do you think facial masks really work?

  • I think it just depends on the ingredients and your skin needs.  I've been thinking about playing around with homemade masks with ingredients that are supposed to be good for the skin, like oatmeal and honey.  A friend of mine does a homemade peel off mask made from gelatin and milk!  I think you microwave, apply it warm, let it cool and then peel off.  He and I are going to do a movie night where we play around with adding different things to his concoction and then use the masks.  I'm going to start researching different ingredients to see what sounds like it might actually be beneficial to the skin.  I'll let you know if any of it actually does something :)
  • I think the Mint Julep mask does work. When I've used it in the past, I used it 3 nights a week and it did suck up oil and reduce breakouts for me. My skins responds well to sulphur, which is the active ingredient in that mask.

  • Clay masks draw a lot of gunk and impurities out for me. I can definitely tell a difference when I use them regularly. Borghese Fango Active Mud for Face & Body is my favorite but pretty much any sulphury clay mask works for me.

  • I use the Ole Henriksen blueberry enzyme mask from sephora and it's the only mask that has ever done what it says it will do (even proactiv mask didn't work for me). The mask is meant to be more of a moisturizing mask (not a purifying mask like QH mint julep), but it doesn't leave a greasy film on your skin or anything like that. I use Tazorac gel and it causes my normally oily skin to get very dry around the nose and mouth. I use the enzyme mask as needed when I have a flaky face and it gets rid of all my flakes and refreshes my skin. I'm not sure if that's the kind of mask you're looking for, but it's great for combo/dry skin.

  • Masks can be so fun, but come to think of it-no, no mask has ever made a difference for me!
