Poll with article Transvag Ultrasounds

So I'm a little shocked than an older female has never had to have a transvag ultrasound. I'm curious if its a norm or not:

[Poll]

 CLICKY

Plenty of pundits on both sides of the ideological aisle have weighed in on the country's ongoing abortion debate and the transvaginal ultrasound mandates passed by several states?what some people argue is part of the GOP's so-called "war on women." But few have actually gone through the procedure?which is why Megan Carpentier, executive editor of the progressive news site Raw Story, decided to have a "completely unnecessary transvaginal ultrasound" and document the experience for readers.

"It was vigorously uncomfortable," Carpentier wrote, partly "because the technician has to press the wand directly against the areas she wants to get an image of?your uterus, Fallopian tubes and ovaries?so there's more movement and more direct contact with pressure-sensitive areas of your body."

Carpentier continued:

You're also not lying flat on your back to facilitate access to the upper reaches of your vagina; and you're being penetrated with a longer, rigid object than is used in a regular pelvic exam. In my case, as the technician explained after, my uterus is "high," or tilted toward my abdomen, so she had to tilt the wand accordingly?and because it was so uncomfortable, she halted the exam before fully exploring my Fallopian tubes or ovaries. If I had been pregnant (which I knew I was not), the exam might have lasted longer as she looked to rule out an ectopic pregnancy and locate the miniscule gestational sac.

It was not, however, like being raped, despite all the furor-generating headlines and "Doonesbury" cartoons that were printed. It was uncomfortable to the point of being painful, emotionally triggering (and undoubtedly is moreso for victims of rape or incest or any woman in the midst of an already-emotional experience) and something that no government should force its citizens to undergo to make a political point. But it wasn't like being raped?and using language like that not only minimizes rape for its survivors but makes them and other women more frightened of the procedure, which has significant and important medical uses.

Carpentier even shot a video of the procedure and uploaded it to YouTube.

She concluded: "It's not a choice to be made at a distance by elected officials with an ideological axe to grind, little medical knowledge and a belief that it's acceptable to require doctors to put unnecessary instruments inside women's bodies in an effort to achieve in practice what they can't constitutionally pass into law: an end to abortion."

A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.

Re: Poll with article Transvag Ultrasounds

  • In my 15 year quest to concieve I was wanded in my lady business more times than I can count.  I know which techs did it rough, which seemed a tad sadistic, who went in too deep, who not to go near during ovary peeping season, and the most useless of all, the "afraid to put it in far enough to get a decent look at my much maligned lady innards."

I've had more girl on wand action than actual sex, I think.

  • Yeah. I got to put it in myself though which I think helped. I really didn't find it all that uncomfortable either. It wasn't comfortable but not uncomfortable. I felt more agony during my pelvic ultrasound while my bladder was filled to bursting and no one would let me pee.

  • I'm 34 and have never even heard of this. But my ladyparts have never been problematic.

  • I found them very uncomfortable because of the pressing on the sides.  ::shudder::

  • Never had one. I had a regular u/s for the pregnancy, but I never needed the Transvag.

  • I had two, one after a spotting incident around 7 weeks pg, and one at my first appt just past 8 weeks for dating.  All others were abdominal.

I've never needed one for non-pregnancy issues.

  • No children, no plans for them, no ultrasound of any kind.

However, when I got my annual done in Korea last year (that was an... experience), in my pre-meeting, they asked when my last u/s was.  Um, never?  I asked my translator why I would need one, and she said Korean women get them regularly to check their parts.  But, she told the docs that b/c it's not done in America, I shouldn't have to have one, either.

They apparently do a lot of tests regularly, but I got out of all of them because it's not done like that in America.

I've had a transvaginal ultrasound three times due to ovarian cysts, not pregnancy. Your description pretty much sums up how I felt about the whole process. Two of the three times they were done in a hospital ER after I'd been given pain meds which probably took the edge off anything that would hurt. Emotionally, as a survivor of sexual assault, I think putting it in myself was a huge help, but I can see how it would be triggering for others. I  don't think they should be a requirement for abortions.

  • I did when I got KU at the old age of 19. I needed it to confirm the pregnancy before I could decide what I wanted to do, since I thought I would get abortion. I ended up miscarrying but probably would have ended up keeping it (not because of the ultrasound though). It wasn't a big deal to me but I definitely don't think they should be a requirement.

  • I've had two bouts of ovarian cysts, so I've been wanded. It wasn't great, but was overshadowed by the overwhelming pain in my ovaries at the time. I was once asked in front of my mom if I was sexually active (I was like 20 at the time) and answered no, even though I had been. Dear ultrasound lady: Don't ask an unmarried 20-year-old whose mom is there with her if she gets down.

  • I had one when I was first ku. It's routine in my OBs office. It was seriously painful. Jab, jab, jab and then press as hard as he could to get a better picture. Suck.

I said mine was not related to pregnancy, but actually it's tangentially related.  I had it done to check my ovaries and see if I was producing eggs during the first round of testing with my RE.

Ack!  Sex is already painful enough for me (yeah, I'm a lucky one), and I actually want it.  I'd probably cry at the dildo cam.

  • I had one to rule out PCOS. It was uncomfortable.
  • i have had MANY - for pregnancy, trying to get pregnant, and other issues not related to pregnancy.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • i had won after my first appt with my new Gyn. My ovaries felt swollen to her... it was because I was ovulating. I saw the egg that is DS1
  • Transvag ultrasounds are a standard part of your annual gyno visit in the Czech Republic, so I had a couple when we were living there.
  • I had one when my Gi issues were being evaluated.  I also placed the dildo cam in. Not painful but most definitely invasive.

ETA They found fibroids at the exm and now my (usually low intervention) ob gyn wants to do a yearly ultrasound to check them.

Would you mind telling me more about this?  I've got some still being diagnosed GI issues myself (presents like gallbladder issues, but I've had every gallbladder test imaginable and *nothing*).  I'm trying to keep better records of my GI pain + my menstrual cycle to see if they overlap.

I've had one dildo cam (also self inserted) and it was uncomfortable bordering on painful, and they didn't find the ovarian cysts they were probing for.  Not a fan.

  • Two pregnancies, no transvag here.

  • One pregnancy, 2 transvag ultrasounds- one for early dating (6wks) and one for the NT scan. Neither was particularly pleasant, but the only time it was painful was during the NT when the tech was trying to find one of my ovaries and went WAY too far to one side. Other than that, I'd say it's just a weird pressure, not pain.

  • I had one done for cysts. I asked the tech if was going to at least buy me dinner after. Har Dee Har Har.

  • I still think if you have to slap a condom on something and lube it up before jamming it in my peesh, it's invasive.  Call me old-fashioned.

Nonny-  shoot me an email, I don't mind sharing the gory details.  I have a gall stone (discovered on ultrasound) that doesn't cause issues and the fibroid.  I was evaluated for possible chrons, ibs, and a fistula.  Ultimately we think a big part of the problem was an antibiotic induced infection. I took a wildly expensive antibiotic to fix that issue and it was a miracle drug.

  • For ovarian cysts. Two or three times. Not a big deal. Longer, but less invasive feeling than a pap-smear with the cold metal thingee.

Maybe she should leave this opinion to the women who would have it done against their will?  Of course it wasn't like rape...she volunteered for it.

Oh, that is fantastic. This...this is wine. Yeah. Look what all these idiots are drinking. Look at these dicks! Obviously it's not really delicious, like hot chocolate or Coke, but for wine...brilliant.

Weird.  I have that account forwarded to my regular one and just use it for advertisements and the nest, and it's disabled. I'm seeing if Google will let me recover it, not sure what happened, I guess maybe it got hacked.
