Re: Republicans are racist, Catholics are anti choice etc...
I'm with you here. I am pretty careful to check out the organizations I'm involved with first to make sure they are pro-gay marriage. Fortunately in this country thats just about everyone, including many Conservative party members. Our Girl Guides are different too - I'm a GG leader but I probably wouldn't be in the US.
I did have a moral dilemma recently - I spearhead a Food Drive for the local Salvation Army each year. Its the ONLY food bank in town and helps over 1000 families. They won't recognize gay marriage and their general policy is that being gay is a sin. I wanted to stop doing the food drive, but didn't want kids to go hungry. So I met with the local pastor and talked about my concerns - turns out his beliefs are very different from the official SA beliefs and he certainly isn't preaching against gay marriage. Thank goodness.
Exactly: local leaders are often different from the overall organization. That is all many of us Catholics have been saying for years lol.
And ceejay: I get what you are saying. But many of us defend because it's a constant attack. And the way the attacks are waged I take issue with. Instead of just discussing the issuen( which in most cases I tend to agree the issue at hand is bad) it starts from post one as an attack on the group as a whole. It's frustrating. Think of it like this: if my grandmother were a controversial person (which she is not) and there were things she tried to decree our family do I didn't like, I would fight with her about it and try to change her mind ( all while not doing it just because she told me to). But if an outsider went off on how horrible my grandmother is and by association, how horrible her whole extended family is, I would probably get defensive and talk about her positive qualities.
