a massive problem for the romans (who dont mention him at all),

That might be an overstatement.  Let's assume for a minute he did exist.  You nail a few planks together, problem solved.  What's to mention?  He doesn't become a problem for them until later.  Like, at the point it becomes obvious that their civilization is crumbling anyway.

The Gauls, the Visigoths, the Vandals....they were massive problems for Rome.

Pretty much. Jesus was crucified because the people demanded it. It's not like he was instigating riots or that the Romans had a problem with him.

Although, were they having troubles with the goths just yet?

In any case, Jesus was a local problem, easily solved at that and crucifixion wasn't really uncommon.

  • No, they weren't really having problems with anyone at that point.  Augustus founded a city in Belgium.  It was an infrastructure phase.

Emulate that's a great possibility.  Dragons now I'm convinced he Jane existed for sure bib.

  • The scary thing here is that this could have been me or a close friend in high school.

There's hope for him yet. ;-)

  • Yes I thought that I read once that the Romans kept detailed records of those who were crucified and Jesus was not mentioned in these records.

I'm sure what you read will be discounted by the ones who argue the talking snake was the evil devil, of whom wanted us to use our critical thinking skills rather than just obey the authority of a threat made by something they thought they might have heard but aren't really sure.

Yeah, maybe. But like I said, if you dont believe in god, Jesus existence matters about as much as Fred of Aramathea. If he did exist, then he was a loony who the romans killed, and thats all.

All I was saying is that there is not much evidence he did exist. There's not much evidence either way. But there certainly isn't enough evidence to proclaim that he definitely existed, thats for sure. I don't even know why it matters to the religious people who are all about faith - when did evidence become so important? I don't mean that to be snarky, but its like the people that go hunting for bits of Noahs ark - what's the point? Evidence shouldn't be needed - not if you have faith. And especially when the lack of evidence wont make you doubt.

Sorry, I was counting the Genisis way, and translated "3" into "any number of years that suits my intent" lol.

I agree with this, which is why I never understand when the religious get excited when archaeologists find evidence of noah's arc or the jesus box or whatever is the newest find.

I think you mean days, not years and it is genesis.  At least get it right! Smile

So he received funds from Freedom FROM Religion Foundation for making a day about religion when it was intended to be about literature?

    The Bible is literature.

    That was his point.

No, I get that. But you don't find it ironic given the organization's title? The name would imply they exist to oppose having religion shoved in people's faces, but who's doing the shoving here?

    I'm totally with you here.

This cracks me up. Glad he got the money.

    Yes ditto!

  • It's obnoxious.  There's plenty of legitimate things for atheists to be upset about, but I'm not seeing where a jab at Christians in this way has a point other than pissing people off.

Yup...and that's exactly why I would have done this in high school.  That and to show just how much smarter/superior I was than those that believed in such things.

So what changed your mind from high school forward?  What made you dismiss this quality that made you feel smarter/superior to the people you ended up joining?

Well, that change was years in the making, but first and foremost, I matured.

Can you expand a little bit?  It's kind of a huge choice, and I imagine you have quite a lot to say on it.  I'm curious, since you brought it up. No snark.

I know you're sincere D.  There really is too much that happened (and I'm not sure when I got over the atheist, rebellious stage tbh).  However, in my late 20's-early 30's I went on a soul search of sorts.....this is when I researched all religions, narrowed it down to Christianity and then eventually narrowed it down to Catholic.
