talk to me about tattoos

I think I've finally (at 33) decided what tattoo I want. Placement where it won't stretch too much is important at this point.

I'm thinking of starting on my left front shoulder (like where your bra strap hits the cup) and continuing over the shoulder to the top of the arm. Kind of like this, but smaller so I can cover it with a shirt easily:

(scroll down, Cali made it a decent size)

I think I want some sort of art nouveau dahlia design, and of course I can't find one. But sorta like above shading wise, and a combo of these (but better):

(scroll)

(scroll)

(scroll, damn you)

Is there a better way to do an image search? I'm having a hard time with the google. And there are a lot of bad "art nouveau" tattoos out there. Like they look like bad airbrushing with extra swirls.

  • No advice but I really love that 1st one.

  • I'm sorry that it's SO BIG, of course the Knot won't let me resize.

I've seen a few people around town with similar to the dogwood one, and they got it done at the same place, so I think I know where I'm going.

Anyone have an opinion on white tattoos? I think subtle is better as I age, and I'd like not to clash if I'm wearing a fancy dress (<<happens every 2-3 years).

  • White tattoos do NOT hold up well over time.  I would not recommend.  They end up looking more like scar tissue, stretch marks or branding than a tattoo.

As far as searching goes, don't expect to find exactly what you want.  Print out a number of photos, take them to an artist, and have him or her sketch something up, taking into consideration the things you like and dislike about your examples.

While I am by no means an expert, I have a fair amount of work, and I'm friends with a few professionals, so please let me know if you have other specific questions!

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Yeah, you're probably not going to find something exactly like what you want, but a good artist can take your ideas and create something. Otherwise, you wouldn't be getting something unique, and you might as well pick a tazmanian devil out of the flip book in the front of the tattoo place.

  • I have a white tattoo, it's my favorite out of all of them. I think it will be hard to tattoo in white if you want a really intricate design like some of the ones that you posted. You have to have the white tattooed a lot for it to show up, it's like  getting double the ink. And it fades faster so you'll need to have touch ups if you want it to stay bright white. I've never retouched mine, it's about 14 years old now, and it's pretty subtle. That's one of the things I love most about it though.

Love your designs. And I love the white. I hope you go for it!

  • I was hoping you'd chime in. Thanks for letting me pick your brain.

Is there a good subtle color? Preferably not pink? My favorite color combo in real life is red, purple and orange, but that might hard to find good clothes matches for. Is grey too emo?

Maybe like the dogwood above, but without the outline? Would the white/grey hold up better?

And yeah, white tattoos look icky really fast.  Just print out some inspiration pics and bring them to the artist you want to work with.

  • Also, I laugh at the idea of Mouse with a white tattoo.  You might as well just draw one on yourself with White Out.  White on white = not visible.

  • I love that second dahlia sleeve. I want a sleeve like whoa. I think I need to figure out what I want to be when I grow up before I do it though.

    image

  • I didn't know you got the white one so long ago, Hezz. I remember the picture you showed, it still looks really good. I like subtle too.

At this point I don't need something that says "I'm so badass, I got a TATTOO". I've just always wanted a permanent artwork to carry around with me. I was talking with my friend who got one of a cello with a tree for the neck. He came up with it because he plays the cello and is a pretty woodsy guy. So he took in a picture of a tree and a cello and said "Can you combine these?" Then I started thinking how I love gardening/flowers and old storybook illustrations - bingo!

The lack of exactly what I'm looking for isn't worrying me so much as the number of really bad ones I'm seeing out there. I'm not always good at explaining what I like about something without a visual. The designs I've seen from this one local artist are already really close to what I love. I hope she knows what dahlias look like.

I actually happen to have a new scar near the old white so you can see the color difference. You can also see how the white fades out.

I SAID SUBTLE. An hello? White Out isn't very practical because it washes off.

I don't like having to match things, I'm bad at it already. I don't want to just choose one color either. And just black looks weird on a flower to me. Flowers aren't black.

I don't care if it fades, just as long as it doesn't stay raised. I love the idea of someone staring at my shoulder trying to figure out if they're seeing things.

Can I add color over it if I change my mind? Can I get it to say Wino Forever?

I'm not sure if you're talking to me, but I'm going to act like you are!

There are a lot of colors you can use that'll be relatively subtle -- they can use pastels, etc.  I'm not a fan of pinks, but there are a lot of nice lighter purples and greens.   Personally, I love grey tattoos, and I don't consider myself emo.  The majority of my work is black and grey!  You can talk with an artist about a design without the black outline, but I'm fairly certain that those don't tend to hold us as well, either.   You never know, though!  Everyone is different.

You should for real go into a few different shops and talk to a few differet artists.  Get recommendations, but go with your gut.  You need to trust and like this person a lot.  You'll be spending significant time and $$ on this, and you want to make sure the artist's style is in line with your aesthetic.

But, really, don't stress!  What's the worst that can happen?  You don't like it?  Been there.  It's amazing what they can do in terms of covering up.  You'll be great!

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Oh, wow, he is talented. I thought the name of the place was Tiger Lily, but I just looked them up, and uh, no. So I'll put this on the list.

The people I saw around town (Ikea and TJs, and on the max) had it done by someone named Amy. They were all flowers in that old storybook/nouveau look. Maybe I'll hang out at Ikea and see if I see the checker again ;)

  • When Mr. Mod got his done we wanted to really intricate scroll work. But because of the size of the tattoo the artist said we needed to simplify that part because the little details would be so close together it wouldn't look good. If the tattoo had been bigger the detailed stuff would have been easier. This tattoo artist is really talented and is the one most commonly used by the motorcycle/scooter crowd we were hanging with at the time so I have seen a ton of his work and believe/trust him. Mouse I guess this is a long way of saying that I think the smaller the tattoo the simpler it has to be.

  • I was GOFZ. I just forgot to quote! And then other people had chimed in, so I didn't want to look like I wasn't meaning them too. Because I appreciate all.of.you.  Does not holding up mean bits just fade? I could handle that.

     ---

Mod, I'm thinking not too much smaller than the first one, just starting up high enough over the boob that if I wear something strapless it won't cut off the bottom, and on the arm stopping where a t-shirt sleeve would.

    ---

Also, I tried googling "Portland floral tattoo" because you never know, I could find the person I was thinking of that way. And 1) like half of them are dahlias. And 2) how pretty is this?

Yes. That's a nice flower design. But I think the black emphasizes the design vs florality of it.

  • Sorry to butt in, but I've been to Infinity Tattoo about 3 times now. Paul and his wife Amanda are great tattoo artists. But definetly take in pictures of your likes and have your dislikes handy as well. It will be your permanent art work, you may as well get what you want. And remember, only you are allowed to judge your art work. Thanks.
  • I've been thinking about a tattoo lately too! But whenever I start thinking seriously about it, I picture Fallin and my mother in law looking at me in disappointment.

I would love to get something for my sisters somewhere. I love quote tattoos, but it's so hard to find something unique, personal, the right length, timeless and not cheesy.

I kind of want to get "I carry your heart" on the side of my wrist/arm.

  • I love the middle one (the red and light blue).

I don't think you have to worry about matching your tattoo.  My next one is going to be an arrow, because I want everyone to know I'm just as badass as Katniss, but then I think I'm going to do something colorful.

Sneakers and tattoos:  they don't have to match your outfit!

I have wanted a tattoo forever, but I just have no idea what design to get.  And I am not above getting a tramp stamp.
