Worst Airports in the U.S.

Re: Worst Airports in the U.S.

  • Wow, ORD isn't even in the top 5. I'm impressed. They must be cleaning up there act.
  • I'm still scarred by an experience I had at the Philadelphia airport.

I find DFW to be a really easy airport to get in and out of.

It's true about the MSP airport being very friendly but I always have to walk for miles to get anywhere inside.

LaGuardia is rightfully in the #1 spot for worst airports. LGA is the biggest shiithole in the whole wide world.

Really?  I mean, I'm not a huge fan of LGA, but give me LaGuardia ANY day over JFK...

And, seriously, Nashville is on my enemies list as well. Or at least it was back in the day. What kind of airport shuts down all it's restaurants at 6:00 pm?

  • I don't have too many issues at the NY aiports, but I agree with LAX- that is the worst and Chicago sucks.

I also used to live in Orlando and I loved MCO. Getting in and out is like driving in a maze but I always thought it was clean, easy to navigate, quick security and baggage.

Ditto. I have flown in and out of MCO a zillion times and it was always an easy, pleasant process...  The security lines are pretty short compared to other places I've been, and even coming back through customs was a quick and painless process.

However, I will now pay more money to fly out of JAX since 1) it is closer to me , 2) it really is a nice, super clean, easy to navigate airport, 3) families with small children excited for Disney world are not flying to and from there.

I guess MIA must have finally finished their expansion/renovations.  I had a connection through there and nearly missed the plane because the signage was so bad due to the construction. What a mess.

  • I have never been to NE, know enough to avoid Atlanta, and fly into Burbank when I got to LA, so I've gotten to avoid most of the bad ones. I have connected in Philly, Dallas and O'Hare without issue though.

I hate Orlando though--any tourist city makes me crazy with the security lines. Vegas and San Diego are bad too. People aren't paying attention and have no idea what they are doing.

Kansas City is a terrible airport--there are no amenities almost at all. And it's in the middle of nowhere. The only good thing is security is so short and delays aren't any worse than any other place.   I heard that something is being updated, but we'll see how much actually gets fixed.

  • Newark is made up of two completely different worlds - Terminal C, which is clean, lots of stores, multiple security lines, etc, and then Terminals A & B which suck. If you fly United (formerly it was the Continental hub...sob), then your experience will likely be a very nice one.

Same with Philly - I've only ever flown US Air out of Philly, and their terminal is quite nice. I imagine the others aren't though.

does o'hare still have the plastic toilet seat covers that revolve when you open the bathroom door?  those things freaked me the eff out.  and i would NEVER take an afternoon connection through o'hare in the summer.  i was all but guaranteed a thunderstorm and weather delays.

    Heh, I actually love those!

    I have a love-hate relationship with KCI.

On the one hand...it's super convenient for me, parking is dirt cheap, it's easy to navigate, the staff is friendly and helpful, and I have never waited more than 10 minutes for check-in, security, or luggage.

On the other...if you are hungry and you go through security, you're screwed unless you want a stale pre-made sandwich.

  • All these airports seem to be ones that are layed out terribly because they were built in phases and had to put addons in different areas and parking in odd places.

I haven't found ATL to be bad but ILs always just drop us off and pick us up curb-side there.

    Philly can kiss my bumper.

  • I almost exclusively fly in and out of OAK, LAS and LAX on SW at that.. I like SFO but it's an hour bart ride to get to and tickets are usually $50 higher than OAK, so I avoid it. Anyway, I would much rather fly in and out of LAX on SW than LAS. Much faster and easier to get through security. I will give LAS location and entertainment with the videos of showgirls going through security, but it takes twice as long as it should.

    Yes

This is why I will ONLY go out of EWR- still crappy but at least slightly less crappy than the alternatives.

and its much closer to my house than the other two. #lazy

I fly almost exclusively fly Continental/United and its still teh suck.  The lines alone at security make me weep. And I've had to stay overnight more than once due to delays that had nothing to do with weather.

It's only tolerable because I know the airport so well and I know what to expect. I feel badly for tourists who have to deal with it for the first time.

Yep yep yep in re: CVG.

I pretty much avoid CVG anymore, though, and just fly into CMH. I tend to need a car when I'm in Ohio, anyway, and it ends up being easier (and MUCH cheaper) to fly into CMH and rent a car than to fly into CVG.

  • How on earth is Miami on the "best" list?  DH and I always say we'd rather fly into Ft. Lauderdale and float on a raft to Miami than fly directly into MIA again.

  • I fvkcing hate Atlanta airport. Want to know WHY? Because after I have gotten of a nearly 10 hour flight from my Dad's house at about 6am, waiting in the longest immigration live ever( not ATL's fault it's just that about 7 767's land at exactly the same time) , re-clain my bags and clear customs the last thing I want to do is re-check those mvtherfvckers and wait for them AGAIN at baggage claim!!!

True dat. My co-worker who lives in Bogota always flies to FLL instead of Miami. He is thrilled Jet Blue is starting service from Bogota to FLL soon.

I experienced Minneapolis (MSP) for the first time yesterday, and it definitely earns its spot at #1.  Great signage led me to light rail right into downtown--I had planned on just taking a cab.  I also love #2 Charlotte for its welcoming white rocking chairs.

I love MSP.  They also have great kids play areas.  Some people are all "you might be stuck in a blizzard" but whatevs.  Every northern airport in the winter has that problem.

We do too.. even though my family lives about 10 mins from CVG we either fly to L-ville or Dayton to drive (for Airtran or SWA from BWI).  It sucks but it is much cheaper... Every time I see a SWA commercial for "now flying from BWI to xxx" I yell at the screen, come on break into CVG!!!!!!

No way, Newark is worse. You should know this!

I don't find LAX to be that bad, but it's a PITA to get there. Did the city build the green line TO the actual airport? No. But supposedly there's a mythical shuttle that will take you to the green line and then you can sit on it for 40 minutes until you transfer to the blue line, which you can sit on for 45 minutes until you get downtown. My H was out of town over the weekend and he used the Fly Away bus, which is $7 round trip and way better than any public transit option.

How could I forget about this? This is the stupidest thing EVER. Why would you design an airport so that you have to go through security to get OUT of the airport?

I heard that they were working on a change to this, but that was like 5 years ago, so...

True. Security in LAS is awful, but they have hands down the best TSA videos.

  • LAX Doesn't bother me so much - probably just because I am used to it. Granted, I think it is dirty and the shops suck, but time wise it has never been that bad. We had to connect through O'hare recently (and totally caught off guard too - we had a direct flight that cancelled) and OMG, it was a nightmare. Esp. since we had only 2 hours between flights and we had to go through customs since we were coming from the UK.

I wish I could fly out of John Wayne (SNA) more, but everything is so expensive out of there. It is just never worth it.

    Also, Heathrow was straight insanity.

    also, newark smells like feet.

That's not just Newark, that's Jersey as a whole.

*runs away from thread before getting bonked in the head by Jersey peeps*

EWR is 10 minutes from my house. I've never had an issue with the check in or security lines at any time of year other than the week before Christmas. But I always take the first flight out in the morning, which really is the best thing to do at any airport.

I hate LGA with a fiery passion. It is the worst.

  • I'm partial to MSP and SFO. I love both of them. I don't mind Chicago, and Detroit was nice although if you miss that damn entry to the shuttle train, you're walking miles to your gate. That happened to us on a quick layover. We were those crazy folks running through the airport. One of the last people to board.

Dallas isn't too bad either. They have some nice options.

  • I've never had a problem with LGA.  I don't care about shops or anything like that though.  I just want to park in the garage, walk in and see a ladies room, which is exactly what you get there.

JFK is ok if you take the Air Train from Jamaica.  Locals will appreciate this...we took the bus from Riverhead to Pt. Jeff, got a ride from a friend to Ronkonkoma Station because there's no connecting bus, took that to Jamaica, and from there took the Air Train to JFK.  I swear it took almost as long to get from Riverhead to JFK as it took to fly to Gatwick.

Usually we're flying to FL though, and I will take ISP ANY day.  I remember when it was one giant room with 3 doors.

  • I'd like to add that my favorite thing about OAK is the Fentons in the terminal. It's amazing what situations a sundae with their caramel sauce will improve.

I forgot about this gem.  However, I did get an email today that as of 5/16, the new international terminal will be open in Atlanta, and "This state-of-the-art, LEED-certified terminal will accommodate more passengers and make international travel a breeze. "

One of the shining features of this new state-of-the-art terminal is that you won't have to re-check any bags or re-go through security.

    We'll see.
