I don't think it's so out of the realm to think that would trump gay marriage, especially if you think (like I do) that gay marriage will be part of our future, regardless of who is President.

Are you willing to wait, KA, while people campaign actively to prolong that future from arriving?

I'd prefer not to, and I continue to hope that people like me are the future of the Republican party.  But it is not the issue that I vote on when it comes down to it.  I know you don't agree with that stance, but to be fair, it's not like Obama is a proponent of gay marriage, either.

I'm with KA.  I don't think it's fair to expect anyone to vote purely based on social issues.  I mean, if they do, fine, but I think it's legitimate to vote based on the economy, foreign policy, or a host of other things.  Which does not mean you are against those other things, just that you have different priorities at the ballot box.

Honestly, I'm surprised that a gay man, particularly an openly gay activist, would work for Romney in the first place. Considering one of his last acts as governor of MA was to try to get gay marriage overturned.

This guy's entire professional life deals with foreign policy, and he does not think President Obama is headed in the right direction.  I don't think it's so out of the realm to think that would trump gay marriage, especially if you think (like I do) that gay marriage will be part of our future, regardless of who is President.

I agree.  Being gay and being pro-gay marriage doesn't have to be all this guy is about.  He can support other issues and support other candidates and political parties while making clear his disagreement on the gay marriage issue.

There's actually a West Wing episode (lol) that touches on this - Josh is having a conversation with a Republican congressman about how anti-gay republicans are or something and he's like "Congressman, you're gay."  and the congressman's response is essentially that yes, he is gay but that doesn't have to be ALL he is and he can support the Republican party for their stances and positions on other issues.

Well, according to that asshat from NRO, he only says he opposes gay marriage, but his actions say otherwise.

  • I think by criticizing gay people who support GOP candidates, we're playing right into the hands of the conservative asshats who played a part in this aide resigning and who think gay people can't possibly care about anything else besides gay marriage. I actually think we need more prominent gay GOPers to show that, OMG, gay people care about things like the economy and foreign policy.

You lie.  They only care about fashion and interior decorating.  And Pilates.

Except that the GOP has made it clear that gays are not really welcome in the party, so it's unlikely that we will have any prominent gay GOPers.  This story is just case in point.

True.  And I think the fact that he's a political professional has a lot to do with comparmentalizing his private life and his political beliefs.

Me, I'm a single-issues voter.  I can not vote for my own second-class citizenship by voting for an anti-choice candidate.  I was actually excited in the last election when Giuliani entered the race and (briefly) had a shot - it would be the first time in my life I had the relative luxury of choosing between two candidates.

Welllll, the last sentence there doesn't work because he's never actively worked or talked against it.

In some respects, I understand what you, Moxie, and someone else said just above-- it's just a priority thing.  On the other hand, if not American citizens are actively, institutionally disenfranchised and marginalized, I don't know what good all our prosperity is.
