TMZ is reporting retired NFL star Junior Seau is dead, and the police are investigating a shooting in his home:
NFL legend Junior Seau was found dead in his home in Oceanside, CA ... and cops are investigating a shooting ... multiple law enforcement sources tell TMZ.
Cops are currently at Seau's home just outside San Diego. Seau was 43-years-old ... and leaves behind 3 kids and an ex-wife.
Seau, a 12-time Pro Bowler and 6-time First-Team All-Pro, was selected fifth overall in the 1990 NFL draft after an outstanding collegiate career at USC. He played with the San Diego Chargers through the 2002 season, spent 2003-2005 with the Miami Dolphins, and then signed with the New England Patriots in time for the 2006 season. In New England's perfect regular season of 2007, he played in all 16 games and started four. Seau first retires after that season, only to come back and play in 2008 and 2009 before finally leaving the NFL for good.
"I'm going to go surf," he told Showtime upon his January, 2010 retirement announcement. Whatever happens, I can say, honestly say, that that probably was my last game."
Seau is the eighth member of the Chargers 1994 Super Bowl team to pass. We will keep you updated on this story as more news is confirmed.

Yeah, his car went off a cliff?! And he was like, "Oh, it was an accident, I didn't mean to kill myself or anything." OMG.
I think I just saw a profile of his restaurant on TV a few weeks/months ago. Maybe on triple D? Looked like a typical, but probably decent sports bar and grill type of place.

It was a tough read: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/04/sports/hockey/derek-boogaard-a-boy-learns-to-brawl.html?pagewanted=all
Seau is the EIGHTH members of the 1994 Chargers to die.

This is just crazy. An overdose. An alcohol-related car crash. Three heart-related. Plus an airplane crash and someone who was struck by lightning TWICE.
I did - his last season was with the Rangers. That series of articles still haunts me and it was the first thing I've ever read that actually made me reconsider my support of fighting in hockey.

<a href="http://www.thenest.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Home DYeah, former Bear Dave Duerson shot himself last year & his family is one of many suing the NFL re: concussions he suffered while playing. It's an interesting case (Clicky).

Sad.
EIGHT? Lord. I think there are more players from the 72 dolpins left.
Slate says it's being reported that he freakin shot himself in the chest like another former player who committed suicide in 2011. How horrible.
That was Dave Duerson I was referring to. He shot himself in the chest specifically so his brain could be studied as he'd suffered multiple concussions that (supposedly) led directly or indirectly to his suicide. It's really sad.

I can't believe this, so sad. I really liked Junior and he had such a great smile. Was just watching his mother speaking and could not help but cry.
RIP, Junior.
I just read your link. How horrible. I love the concept of the nfl selling it as "mild" brain injury. Doesn't seem so mild to me.
So sad and what a weird coincidence.
Random side note - in my high school, fortunately no kids ever died. But then the year after I graduated 3 guys who had all been on the boys track team with me died of 3 separate incidences.
It's crazy how the world works sometimes.
Indeed. There has been a lot of focus on head injuries recently (and rightly so), but the heart-related ones make me wonder about the other health impacts. The Deadspin piece said that one guy weighed over 450 pounds when he died, one had diabetes, and the third had struggled with his weight. This push for lineman to be bigger and bigger has got to have some ramifications when they stop playing.
Overall, I've been pretty disenchanted with football recently over all the health & safety risks.
That was a really good but difficult article to read. It also makes me question my support of fighting in hockey, although to be fair, concussions are not always fight-related.
People don't commit suicide for sh!ts and giggles. Depression eats away at you. I've never been near suicide, but my last bout was so bad that it was the first time I really, really understood how you can be driven to that. I could not have dealt with feeling like that long term. I'm lucky--meds and therapy worked wonders for me. Not everyone is so lucky. I am so, so sad for his children. But their father died because of a disease, not because he's a selfish bastard.
<a href="http://www.thenest.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Home D
You're welcome to believe what you want. It may be a disease (roid withdrawal, probably) , but if you were able to take care of yourself, he with his means was able to as well. And he did not (presuming your comparison of his issues to yours is accurate).
It was a disease, perhaps, but it was also coupled with him being a selfish bastard. That's 'my' belief.
I'm really not meaning to be snarky. I should've cut out my first line.
I'm OK for a few reasons...I had a DH who was my advocate when I was incapable of helping myself, I had friends that stepped in and supported me in numerous ways, and a therapist and doctor who helped me find meds that worked once my old meds stopped working. Not everyone is so lucky, and all the $$ in the world doesn't mean that you'll find the right meds, or a therapist that really gets you.
Adding to that, there is still a huge stigma when it comes to mental illness--and even moreso for men, who should just be able to power through it (in the eyes of many).
It may seem selfish to you, but what I'm saying is that depression can push you to the point where you can't even acknowledge how your actions impact someone else, and it's not something you can control.
Mental illness sucks, yo.
