It varies from tribe to tribe on what the requirements are to be a tribal members. For some tribes it can mean access to lots of resources (financial, health, education).

Heh, same here. 1/16 Cherokee. Grandpa's grandmother was fullblooded (is that right then? 1/16 or 1/32). We're supposedly related to Quanah Parker via his white mother. That's all I got. I think I was just one relation removed from being able to get scholarships or grants. *shrug* Perhaps being born/raised in Oklahoma, these connections were more personal or important to her and she tried to find others like her and didn't. This really isn't as important as the work Warren is wanting to do to fix her state (and then, the world! muahahaha! LOL)
And yet we all know Scott Brown posed nude to pay for college.

Also, that was friggin' hilarious, which is really the only reason it was newsworthy. I mean, seriously, a Congressman in Cosmo? FUNNY!

Elizabeth Warren, who I would argue is a national figure, even though she's in a state race, spent a decade reporting she's native american when I think most of us wouldn't classify her that way (not to mention that Harvard was playing it up at the time). That's at least as relevant as Scott Brown's photos, right? And yet this board of media savvy people, with a lot of interest in Elizabeth Warren, missed it for 5+ days. How would you explain that other than that it is not getting covered in the same way?

Lol, Y4M. I'm sorry. I don't think this is media bias. I just don't think anyone thinks it is as big a deal as you do.
See, I did some tracing back of my roots because I find history in general interesting, and I thought it would be cool to know more about my family and what things they may have seen throughout history. I don't think there is anything wrong about wanting to know more about your heritage. But I do think it is weird to use some tiny part of you that you don't have a connection with to get some kind of leg up in the world. If I found out that I have a Native American ancestor, I might read some more about the tribe or whatever because I have an interest. I certainly wouldn't go try to use that in some way. I think there is a line there.

I don't think that it applies in Elizabeth Warren's case but, for some, that leg up can be quite large. With some of the tribes, it can mean lifetime healthcare, full tuition, some job security, etc.
I suspect that if nudey pics of Elizabeth Warren surfaced, it would get more press. I don't think you can attribute "nakedness is fun to talk about" to a media bias.
I would agree with this 100%. I moved to Oklahoma 3 years ago (and am moving out, thank goodness) but the focus here on American Indian heritage (despite blood quantum) is unlike anything I've experienced in other states. It's very cool, and, from an outsider's perspective, helps create social bonds and is a source of pride for many, sort of like I imagine being of Italian heritage in New Jersey or Irish heritage in Boston might be.
the only reason i know is because i am a 12 year old boy at heart and it has the word NUDE in it. that doesn't mean i think it, like EW's non-minority status, has any bearing on their potential performance in elected office.
and seriously, with all of the discussion lately about how people are drowning in debt, we're going to side-eye anyone who takes legal channels to make money to pay for college? not me.
And of course this is news. Their entire campaign is national news. We have to hear about the gaffes of local candidates, so surely a race as well-known as this one should make national radar.
So... what's the story?
She said she was part NA, when she is, in fact, part NA.
Is it that she's only 1/32nd that's the problem? The principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, Bill John Baker, is also only 1/32nd Cherokee.
I don't see the problem here. If she was trying to muscle her way into something claiming NA status, I'd see it. If she lied about her NA status, I'd see it.
It's a form. She filled it out truthfully. Unlike somebody else we know.

Someone else may have commented, but DH is 1/4 Sioux NA (Rosebud tribe), and thus our kids are 1/8. A few years ago FIL made sure DH knew the tribe was having what I dubbed the "open enrollment" to make sure our kids' names were added to the tribal list, so in the future they can claim their NA status if/when they choose and it will be legit (vs. just saying they are but not having it recorded anywhere).
I'm also 1/32 Cherokee (apparently descended from Pocahontas, but I have no documentation to that effect), but I've never claimed it anywhere on paper.
