I wonder, though, if she got more in terms of aid for school?

That hasn't been the Brown campaign's accusation, but I'm just about certain it isn't the case anyway. The minority disclosure to which they are referring was made later on, when she was teaching at Harvard as a professor.

But if you want to point fingers at how these candidates funded their educations, be cautious. Brown posed in nudie mags to fund his education. Don't start that conversation!

slow your roll. I don't care if she collected pennies off the sidewalk. It was just a thought on why the issue. Plus, what Brown did was not illegal So I am okay with that conversation.

Sorry I meant for that to be TIC. The Brown NudieFlap is old news and I'm not particularly offended by it anyway....its just fun when his pics show up in threads, lol.

  • It varies from tribe to tribe on what the requirements are to be a tribal members. For some tribes it can mean access to lots of resources (financial, health, education).

"To be considered a citizen in the Cherokee Nation, an individual needs a direct Indian ancestor listed on the Dawes Rolls."

  • How do people not become jaded and cynical when it comes to politics?

    WTF Elizabeth?

  • I can't figure out a way to even remotely give a sh!t about this.  For one thing, I wonder if the schools themselves jumped on it because it's a positive to have a minority woman faculty member.

How has this not been a thread yet?

    I hadn't seen the story.

It's pretty ridiculous.  I am also 1/32 Cherokee.  My great-great-great grandmother was on the Trail of Tears.  I'm a whitey mcwhiterson who grew up with all the comforts of suburbia.  I have never and would never claim to be a Native American.

ETA: See, I'm so Cherokee that I accidentally spelled it Cherokke.  Whoops.

Heh, same here.  1/16 Cherokee. Grandpa's grandmother was fullblooded (is that right then? 1/16 or 1/32).  We're supposedly related to Quanah Parker via his white mother.  That's all I got.  I think I was just one relation removed from being able to get scholarships or grants.   *shrug*  Perhaps being born/raised in Oklahoma, these connections were more personal or important to her and she tried to find others like her and didn't.  This really isn't as important as the work Warren is wanting to do to fix her state (and then, the world! muahahaha!  LOL)

  • Yawn. But lol at "media bias" over this story. There are 50 states you know. The entire nation isn't rivited on Massachusetts state politics. I barely knew Warren was running.

Hahaha. As if these two situations are remotely the same. And who the hell cares that he posed nude a million years ago?

I know the Cherokee Nation has rules as to how Cherokee you have to be to be a member, and I'm sure that 1/32 is not sufficientt. I don't know if most instances where someone would actually "get" something by claiming herself a minority would require membership in an American Indian tribe or not.

To join the Cherokee Nation you have to establish that you are a direct relative of somebody on the rolls, blood quantum is not a factor.

Yes.  My grandmother did this to prove that she was NA, but nothing ever came of it.  But we know exactly who we descended from and all of that history.

Also, that was friggin' hilarious, which is really the only reason it was newsworthy.  I mean, seriously, a Congressman in Cosmo?  FUNNY!

That's exactly my point.  How Scott Brown paid for college is irrelevant, and yet got covered, covered, covered--nationally.

Elizabeth Warren, who I would argue is a national figure, even though she's in a state race, spent a decade reporting she's native american when I think most of us wouldn't classify her that way (not to mention that Harvard was playing it up at the time).  That's at least as relevant as Scott Brown's photos, right?  And yet this board of media savvy people, with a lot of interest in Elizabeth Warren, missed it for 5+ days.  How would you explain that other than that it is not getting covered in the same way?

This tracing ancestry in the US is really weird to a foreigner like me. I mean, I am part African, if we go back a couple of hundred thousand years. Is there a time limit to how far you go back? And frankly, who gives a crap? Its so peculiar.

So when an obviously American person tells me they are Irish or Italian, I like to reply with that. Sometimes I say Chinese, because I am sure at some point in my history someone was related to a person from what became China.

Yeah I've heard that from other non-Americans. Obvious they mean ethnicity/heritage/culture and not citizenship (most of the time).

I have to say I find it silly to go back into finding out who your ancestors were back to the colonial days.  I mean, you have 4 grandparents, 8 great grandparents,.... and 256 greatx6 grandparents. I can't imagine trying to identify with someone who was 1/256th of you. But it is interesting for diversity's sake, I guess.

See, I did some tracing back of my roots because I find history in general interesting, and I thought it would be cool to know more about my family and what things they may have seen throughout history. I don't think there is anything wrong about wanting to know more about your heritage. But I do think it is weird to use some tiny part of you that you don't have a connection with to get some kind of leg up in the world. If I found out that I have a Native American ancestor, I might read some more about the tribe or whatever because I have an interest. I certainly wouldn't go try to use that in some way. I think there is a line there.

I don't think that it applies in Elizabeth Warren's case but, for some,  that leg up can be quite large. With some of the tribes, it can mean lifetime healthcare, full tuition, some job security, etc.

I suspect that if nudey pics of Elizabeth Warren surfaced, it would get more press.  I don't think you can attribute "nakedness is fun to talk about" to a media bias.

I would agree with this 100%. I moved to Oklahoma 3 years ago (and am moving out, thank goodness) but the focus here on American Indian heritage (despite blood quantum) is unlike anything I've experienced in other states. It's very cool, and, from an outsider's perspective, helps create social bonds and is a source of pride for many, sort of like I imagine being of Italian heritage in New Jersey or Irish heritage in Boston might be.

the only reason i know is because i am a 12 year old boy at heart and it has the word NUDE in it.  that doesn't mean i think it, like EW's non-minority status, has any bearing on their potential performance in elected office.

and seriously, with all of the discussion lately about how people are drowning in debt, we're going to side-eye anyone who takes legal channels to make money to pay for college?  not me.

Because when you are 31/32 white, then "people who are like I am" is white people, not native americans?

Did anyone watch the video?  She's channeling Martha Coakley.

Yeah that part made me LOL. I'm 1/16th NA so I guess she's reaching out to whitey mcwhitersons like myself.

And of course this is news. Their entire campaign is national news. We have to hear about the gaffes of local candidates, so surely a race as well-known as this one should make national radar.

while I agree, surely most see this as different. Anything about who, to some,is the darling of the Dems and Occupy Movement will make news. We hear about the crazy in CA too here. 24 hour news cycle is really to blame.

  • So... what's the story?

She said she was part NA, when she is, in fact, part NA.

Is it that she's only 1/32nd that's the problem?  The principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, Bill John Baker, is also only 1/32nd Cherokee.

I don't see the problem here.  If she was trying to muscle her way into something claiming NA status, I'd see it. If she lied about her NA status, I'd see it.

It's a form. She filled it out truthfully. Unlike somebody else we know.

  • Someone else may have commented, but DH is 1/4 Sioux NA (Rosebud tribe), and thus our kids are 1/8.  A few years ago FIL made sure DH knew the tribe was having what I dubbed the "open enrollment" to make sure our kids' names were added to the tribal list, so in the future they can claim their NA status if/when they choose and it will be legit (vs. just saying they are but not having it recorded anywhere).

I'm also 1/32 Cherokee (apparently descended from Pocahontas, but I have no documentation to that effect), but I've never claimed it anywhere on paper.
