  • not necessarily.

  • Well, I'm getting plastic surgery in 14 days.  I'll let you know if I think my self esteem changes.

  • i used to think so until i had the boys and my stomach got GROSS.  not just fat gross, like saggy skin that will never rebound.

i'd like to do it to go back to what i would have been had i not had the boys.  beyond that, i am what i am, you know?

  • Not necessarily. I saw a plastic surgeon for a minor operation on my face in HS because my birthmark made me unhappy. I didn't hate myself, just the birthmark.

I think in some cases, especially if it is extreme, multiple surgeries, or repeat work (like over and over and over).

Other cases, no.  I don't think people who get braces for their teeth have low self esteem and for some a plastic surgery can be similar to the idea of braces.

  • Not necessarily.

  • Not always.  I think my self esteem is pretty good but I fully plan to get a breast lift/implants after I'm done with kids.  If there was a way to work my boobs back into shape I would, but alas, there is not.

  • I don't think they have low self esteem in general, but they are obviously unhappy with that part of their body. I plan to get some work done after I have 2 kids. Family in Rio FTW!!
  • Some may have low self esteem. Some may be vain. And some folks just want to look better. Why do you care?
  • No.  I think there are many people out there that think surgery is no big deal, and some that enjoy surgery.  Personally, I think surgery is not something to be taken lightly.

I think there are many reasons people get plastic surgery, and I think there are definitely people that get it for self esteem reasons.  I also think some people get it for other reasons (medical reasons), and then afterwards realize their self esteem has improved.

  • Obviously someone getting plastic surgery has something they don't like about themselves.  That doesn't translate necessarily to an overall low self-image or self-esteem.  I do think it's more likely someone with low self-esteem might consider plastic surgery over a relatively minor issue (or repeated surgeries), but that doesn't mean surgery = low self esteem.

  • If they do have low self esteem, I think its mainly because the world we live in is at fault. Its a place where a single standard is held up as beautiful, and the pressures for both men and women are enormous and grossly distorted.
  • Not necessarily.  Our society places a huge weight on looks and personally I don't know a single soul who doesn't play into that to some degree.

You could ask the same question about wearing makeup or getting haircuts or not wearing sweatpants to work.

I would agree with this. I mean, we all probably have some body part we aren't totally happy with, or aren't happy with aging. We fix certain things with makeup, clothes. Not sure plastic surgery is really all that different - just permanant.

And you bet - if there was a cure for cellulite or plastic surgery to fix it - I would pay big money for it. Cause this sucks. I never ever thought I would have plastic surgery, but I sure would to fix the jello on my legs that no amount of squats is going to fix.

One day, in a far off land, when I've finally lost some of this freaking "baby" weight, I want to do this. I don't think there's enough weight loss or sit ups in the world to fix that mess.

No, not as a rule. Some people, sure. Others, no; they just want an improvement here or there. I can't wait till I can afford a tummy tuck.

  • If it seems habitual or like its becoming an addictive practice, yes. Not if its along the "normal" line of nose jobs and tummy tucks.

    Giant ditto.

I will consider plastic surgery post-baby (well, when I know I'm done having kids completely) to have a boob lift and/or tummy tuck, depending on how things go. We spend a lot of time boating, beaching, etc. and I like to look good. Its partially vanity for sure.

  • I think getting plastic surgery is just acknowledging that you have an ideal of what you want for your body and knowing that getting closer to it will have a positive impact on your life. I think there is something to be said for having enough self esteem to go after something you want and believe that you are worth it over just dealing with it. Ive never had plastic surgery and while there are things that I would like to improve about my body, Ive made some peace with how it looks now. If I were to lose my breasts or have to deal with some disfiguring, you can bet that I would want things the way they were. Most people say this as if its morally superior to wanting something you never had and I just dont see that as so.

It is unfortunate that society pressures women into wanting an ideal that they probably wouldnt want without being bombarded of images of barbie dolls. There are qualities that I like about myself though that could have also been influenced by this.

    This.

I am thinking seriously about a boob lift next year.

With the exception of reconstructive surgery after accidents or cancers, I agree with this wholeheartedly.  I do think it's due to self-esteem that is lower than it should be, but unfortunately self-esteem doesn't have to be lower than average in order for plastic surgery to seem like a good idea.

  • Like the others have said, not usually. Sure there are some people that go over board to make themselves feel happier (Heidi Montag anyone?). I got my nose done last year after hating it my entire life. It did affect my self view because I didn't like how I looked from the side and still had the memory of being called witch back in kindergarten. Anymore, plastic surgery is just tweaking the few areas you're unhappy with, not a sign that you utterly hate yourself.

  • The people who have five different things done? Or have surgeries over and over and over? Yes

But the people who just have one thing done that has bothered them for awhile?Especially if they are a lot happier after they get it taken care of? Probably not.

  • Not necessarily. I'm hoping for a tummy tuck in a few years too.

I've considered it b/c I'm vain. Not b/c I think poorly of myself. *shrugs*
