Big busted REers come in please and answer my question

Have you just given up on button down shirts or do you buy and get them tailored or is there some secret I am unaware of?

Re: Big busted REers come in please and answer my question

  • I have given up.  I'm too lazy to get them tailored.

  • I either try to do a larger size or will sometimes wear a tank and unbutton it a bit. But yeah, it takes time to try on a bunch of different ones and I will sometimes find one that fits well over my bust.

  • I've always stuggles cause I have large bust and a small waist.. So button ups are either to big in the bust, so it's too big in the mid section ot too tight in the bust and fits my mid section just right.. Sometimes i'll just wear an undershirt and unbutton the top few buttons.

  • I'm not even big busted and I often wear them with a tank and the top few buttons undone because of gappage.  If I really want button down, l sometimes safety pin between buttons in the bust area.

You could do like police uniforms and have them outfitted with a hidden zipper / sewn on buttons.

  • I feel really stupid that I hadn't thought of the tank top under. I might try that.

  • I'm not even that big busted, and I have to wear a tank top under almost all my shirts.  I only own a couple button down shirts, but I definitely need to wear something under them and undo a couple buttons.

  • I gave up years ago.  Not worth the headache.  However, my husband gets his button downs custom made and I've toyed with the idea of getting one or two shirts made, just to see if I like it and if it works.  Not cheap though.

  • I don't even own button down shirts. They never work for me.

    11/11/11 = 5 years. Woah!
  • Lindsay, I had basically given up too at least 10 years ago, but every now and then flirt with the idea of wearing them again.

  • I've mostly given up.  If they're loose enough around the boobs that I can get away with a safety pin inside between the buttons, then they're unflatteringly loose around the middle and shoulders.  If they fit reasonably everywhere else, it looks ridiculously gappy around the boobs.  It's just not a good look for me, I don't think.

  • I have two button downs where the material under the arms / down the side-seams is stretchy.  That allows the shirt to be be relatively form fitting in the waist, but give at the bust.  I love them.

I would totally do that if it weren't for the fact that I yo-yo with weight like a mofo. Although I have been toying with the idea of getting bigger ones tailored to my waist since I can have it done while I work now and get a discount.

COMMON man, you can't post that without sharing brand/store info!

And Peony, that's what's holding me back, the gaining/losing weight thing.

  • I have a button down like CalledOut is describing from Old Navy (last year, I think), but I've seen similar ones elsewhere.  That style is always on much more casual button downs.

I know, what an a*#hole, right?!?  I can't remember the brand name and google isn't doing me any favors.  I'll do my best to look at them when I get home this evening and wiill post the name then.

  • I haven't worn a button down shirt in probably 10 years.

I know Converse has a top like that at Target too. Way casual.

Maybe I'll ask one of the personal stylists if they know about this business.

  • Gave up. There's always a gap at the middle button.

Well, on the weekends I'll wear old oversized ones of Mr M's, but I'm guessing that's not what you're asking.

ETA: I have one of those stretchy side/pits shirt and it worked at first, but after a few wearings the gap was back.

The ones that I'm thinking of are def more casual than Brooks Brothers, but still in the decidedly "professional" category.  I wear them with suits al the time.

  • I usually do the shirt over tank top thing as well.

Then I am definitely interested in the follow up! Let us know!

  • Yes, Calledout please do take a look when you are home. This could be awesome. My biggest problem (besides the size H hooters) is that my shoulders are narrow and sloping so even if I size up for the Hs and take in at the waist the shoulders are insane.

  • For those that are using safety pins, you need some doubled sided fabric tape.  I'm in love with the stuff.  Probably won't solve the problem when you're just too big busted for a shirt, but for general gapping it is great.  I use it for all button ups and cardigans.

  • I don't know if I qualify as big-busted or not, but my button downs from The Limited contain my Ds with no gapping. I have a larger frame in general, though, so a M fits the boobs and the waist just fine.

I'm just happy I'm not the only one who has used a safety pin.  I'm always worried someone will see the light bounce off it at work and judge me. Embarrassed

I've tried the tape for the middle-button-boob gap, and it's come undone.  My ladies scoff at the measly power of tape!

  • Well, I sort of feel like a dirty tease.  According to the label, the shirt is by the internationally renowned designed "Tracy M" (ummm, who??).  Google says you can purchase your very own Tracy M shirt at at the finest Ebay vendor in town.  And none of the shirts that I saw look like mine:(  Soweh.
