Mom flees robber, leaves 4 year old daughter

Video if you follow the link.
SPRINGFIELD, MA (WFSB) -A mother in Springfield is being criticized after what she did during an attempted robbery.
Surveillance video captured her running from a robber and leaving her 4-year-old daughter behind.
Springfield police said the man walked up to the mother and her daughter with a knife and demanded the woman's purse.
The woman then ran away, and the robber then tried to grab the little girl.
She escaped and wasn't hurt.
The mother was treated for a stab wound and police are still searching for the robber.

Re: Mom flees robber, leaves 4 year old daughter
It doesn't look like he stabbed her before she ran but he did follow them. It is a crappy A.T.M. type.
Eh, I don't know. He confronted her with a knife, she could have been thinking of just getting him away from her daughter.
Even if she was the bad mom of the day, I'm kind of annoyed that the news angle was all "let's judge this mom in a life threatening situation!", instead of "what kind of *sshole mugs a woman with her 4 year old?".

Make room on that couch for me. People panic. She didn't set out that day to freak out when she was mugged. Poor lady. I hope she is getting some kind of counseling; she must have such guilt.
This is where I'm at. People when they're scared and the adrenaline is pumping do weird things. I can't tell you how many parents throw their kids at me as a sacrifice when I'm working the haunted house. Am I supposed to judge all of them, too?
i'll judge. her kid was right next to her, no? she couldn't grab her hand as she was running away?
people run into burning buildings to try to save their kids.
i'm not going to call ACS on someone who does this but i'll side-eye them for a good long while.
Hahah, this is exactly what happens!
I miss you lite-brite!
Yea, that's where I'm at. I keep trying to put on my not-judging hat but I can't quite get there.
This made me think of this....maybe I need more coffee

This is what I was thinking too. And I do think the robber is an a-hole for robbing a person with a kid.
Scoot over and pass the popcorn.
LOL... I love him!
There's a difference in that they have had a chance to reason through what is happening and then react.
When you just react there's no telling what you're going to do. What is the very first thing that you do when you're scared. I'm not talking about 3 seconds afterwards. What is the very first thing you do?
*sits next to Malcolm*
Though, I shared this with a friend and this was her reply: "That little girl should have kept up! Look alive kid!"
bwhahahhahaah!!!
I'm not sure I would be so capable of reason if my child was inside of a burning building.
ETA: The flight response in the case of the mugging is completely appropriate. But I just can't comprehend not grabbing your kid and dragging them along.
The kid looks bewildered.
While I am shocked, I guess I can't judge this. I feel certain it wasn't intentional.
I'm just saying it's a completely normal fear response, though. I know I've mentioned this, and others here have the same experiences, but working in a haunted house for 4 years now has really taught me that there is no reason when people react completely out of fear. I've seen parents trample their kids and leave the haunted house without them. I saw one guy almost drop his daughter (which prompted me to tell people to not hold their kids when they're going through if I'm working the door). Unless you've been really scared, you have no idea what you're going to do.
i froze, then i took out my wallet, took out my driver's licence and then handed my wallet to the guy with the knife.
Maybe in her panic she though the kid was following right behind her. I am pretty sure it was an honest mistake that she feels terrible about.
I am on team I can't judge.
There is no audio on this tape; mom could have been screaming "Run, little one, run!"
I cannot believe the judgement over a 20 second tape w/ no audio.
You were another person I couldn't wait to hear from.
I'm shocked people are judging this woman. She ran thinking the robber would follow her, and she's obviously not running flat out. He does actually end up following her and not the kid, and according to http://www.wfsb.com/story/18167191/police, she ran back toward them when she thought he wasn't following her (and she was then cut).
I'm honestly not entirely sure what I'd do in the same situation. Knowing how well it works when I'm trying to drag my 4 y.o. somewhere (and that she doesn't react quickly to on the fly commands), that ain't a quick getaway solution. I'd probably throw the purse and hope he follows it.
ETA: In the video in the OP link, they don't show the woman come back into the frame (she obviously ran back in that direction) with the guy after her, and then her being cut as she's trying to get in the bank. I have a hard time thinking they didn't edit this out to enforce the mom being a sh!t.
