On gay marriage, Obama will make a change you can believe in - in 2013

Re: On gay marriage, Obama will make a change you can believe in - in 2013

  • Yeah, still laughing at the idea of the dems sitting at their desk all earnestly trying to completely their work while the republicans blow spit balls and Obama stands out in the hallway making lesson plans.

I've said repeatedly that the republicans are being douchebags. It would be nice however, if we could discuss the president and the dems in a way that acknowledges they aren't exactly doing their job either.

I'm not even sure why I engaged. Where's KateAggie with my martyr juice?

that said, how on earth can you expect anything to get done when you have to work with what amounts to a screaming child as a partner?  every time he says, "i want to do this." the reaction is "NONONONONONONONOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!'  until it dies.  there's no way for change to be made when the other side has specifically said they won't work with you for that change.  it's just not going to happen.

And this right here is why we HAVE to get out of our two-party rut.  HAVE to.  It's why his Hope & Change motif was a total and utter pipedream from the start, and why I shook my head when my relatives were toasting over his election thinking things would finally be different.

Um, no.  It's a blasted machine that is running fully independently and in spite of us.  And we need to change that shiz yesterday.  Which is why if either Romney or Obama are elected, we're still going to be having these same old back & forth he-said-she-said-well-he-promised-no-shut-up discussions.

Yup.  However, it's not going to change.  I've resigned myself to that fact.

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.
  • Also, for the record, I think the idea of "grow some balls" is stupid.  Bush had big old balls (ew).  And look where that got us.  Having balls doesn't mean being stubborn and refusing to budge.  Sometimes you have to pick and choose your battles.  Could Obama have stood up a little more for certain things?  Yeah.  But this idea that he's a weakling with no spine because he hasn't gone blasting through Washington like Optimus Prime is stupid.  If you think him having balls against the Republicans (or any President having balls against the opposing party) would suddenly result in them agreeing to start getting sh*t done then you're crazy.

Nah, all it will require is a change to the Constitution to replace single member districts with proportional representation.  But the very congresspeople who benefit from the current system would have to vote on that.  So, um, yeah, maybe it will take bloodshed and revolt.

THe lack of balls comes from abandoning his goals.  Guantanamo?  Yeah, I really meant close it in a few years.  Patriot Act?  Oh yeah, that is a great thing.  Let's keep it.  Balls does not mean being a moron.  Balls means having a backbone to stand up for what is right.

To a certain point, after which standing up for what is right becomes beating your head against a brick wall instead of taking up the fight for other things that are more probably and possible to get done.  I want a president, not a matyr.

Okay so at what point did he stand up for what was right? By my accounting, he folded and handed over control of his measures to everyone else right from the jump.

I'm honestly not mad at him for Guantanamo though. I believe he went in with every intention but a couple briefings on information you don't get until inauguration likely changed his mind.

Not sure if you're agreeing with Druid or if this is what you are trying to say.  If it's the former, I think we all agree the system is effed.

If it's the latter, the difference between what Druid said and what you said is that Druid is saying that the system is the problem, whereas you seem to be up in arms about the fact that Dems think it is all the Republican's fault and the Dems were working away to fix everything but the damn Republicans just wouldn't let them.  Which I don't think anyone has really said.

It can be true that Dems don't have all the solutions and are kinda idiots, but that Republicans also act like belligerant children and drag their feet anytime the Dems try to do something.

"Obama is even lagging behind that trail-blazing crusader, *** Cheney. Much to the dismay of his 2008 liberal supporters, Obama has embraced the hawkish views of Cheney on targeted assassinations, the unchecked war-making powers of the president and the necessity to keep the prison at Guantanamo operating. But when it comes to echoing Cheney?s surprising support for gay marriage--that is a position currently far too extreme for an apostle of hope and change like Obama."

    Ouch, and touche.

I only wish that we had the radical, liberal President that the right seems to think we have.  I, too, have been disappointed with his complete lack of balls throughout his entire first term.  Most people I know who voted for him in '08 had swore not to support him again in '12 because of it.  Ironically, it was all the over-the-top cray-cray that the Republicans brought in their primary that made us all fall in line again.

Yes, only I am glad he is not the radical liberal I expected him to be.  I do think he lacks balls, but that pales in comparison to the problems most of the R candidates bring/brought to the table.

On gay marriage, I am glad to finally see acceptance on the R and disappointed but not surprised by Obama's stance.  After all, the people that came out in droves to support him in 08 are very religious/anti-gay marriage.  He can't afford (politically) to alienate them now.

Revoking "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." and support of the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act.  Healthcare reform which, once again, was the single strongest focus of his campaign.  Lifting the ban on stem cell research.  Pulling out of Iraq.  Osama bin Laden.

You seem to think "standing up for what's right" means "getting done what I think should have been done."  By your own admission, both parties are dysfunctional as hell.  So I'm not sure how exactly you think him having "balls" and "standing up for what's right" would accomplish anything.  It would make you respect him more, okay, fine, but what does that do for fixing the country.
