Can you name my baby, please?

I need ideas for baby names for daughter #2. Im really sick of calling her "the new baby". As some of you know, daughter #1 is Maren Elizabeth, FWIW.

DH likes traditional names like Emily and I like more unique names like Alba, Vivian or Sloane. We have a short list of names that we agree on at the moment but I dont LOVE any of them: Adelyn / Ava / Natalie / Lauren.I know some of these are quite popular but they are not popular in my circle so Im generally cool with it, although still a little hesitant.

DH LOVES Lauren but I think its too similar to Maren. Would Laurel or Lorelai be better?

I need ideas that are not too popular but not too odd either. Names with a prominent S sound like Vanessa or names ending in R sounds like Audrey or Nora dont sound right with our last name because it starts with an R and the other predominant sound in it is an S.

Im stuck.

Re: Can you name my baby, please?

  • My girl name that we will most likely use for no. 2 is Amelia, most likely nn Mia.  It's not too out there, but not that common (yet).  Plus it has a family connection for us.
  • Beatrice
    Cecily
    Annie
    Eleanor

  • These are the names we liked if we have a girl next time:

    Zoe

    Riley

    Olivia

    Claire

    Cecelia

    Juliette

    Natalie

    #2  10.23.13 EDD
  • If this was a girl, we were gong with Claire.  I also liked Cate.
Baby Numbers 11.8.10 The Sequel on or around 10.13.12
  • Ugh, so many of these names are great but a lot of the ones I like the most start with or end with an "R" which is tough with our last name.

I do really like Amelia, I liked it for DD1 as well, but I think DH shot that one down. Ill have to ask him again, maybe he's changed his mind or Im no remembering correctly. Ive always liked Cate as well but I feel like its a nn and not a full name, am I crazy? Im not really a fan of Catherine or Catelyn anything like that but maybe Im overlooking an obvious "full name" for Cate?

  • I guess Cate could also be short for Cathleen...though I don't know anyone who has spelled it that way.

DH wants Kathleen, nn Katie, if we have a girl since both of our moms' names are Kathleen (nn Kathy).  I personally am not a fan of Kathleen as a first name and I'm not fond of Katie as a nn...but I would be fine with Kathleen as a middle name.  I like Emily, Sarah, and Ava for first names if we have a girl.

This is a discussion we keep starting and putting off because it gets too heated!  We both have such strong opinions on girls' names.

A boy name will be pretty easy for us because we will probably name a boy after DH's brother, who passed away 2 years ago.

FWIW, I have a friend who used Kathleen as a MN for her daughter because both her mom and MIL's names were some variation of Cathy...I really liked it. Her daughter is Lauren Kathleen, but it would go with a lot ;)  I think its a keeper for you for a MN.

Do you know if youre having a boy or girl? I guess not?

  • I really like the name Evelyn. It can be shortened to Evie or Eve. I think it would work well with your last name, too.
  • I like Lauren.  My sister and I have names that sort of rhyme.  Maybe you could change the spelling to Lauryn?

What about Charlotte or Madelyn?  Leah?  Joy?

We don't know what we're having.  But, I agree - Kathleen is a good middle name!  If only I could convince DH!

This was grandmother's name. My cousin named her 2nd daughter Eve in honor of our grandmother.

  • Some of my girl faves:

    Hannah
    Caroline
Amelia (my niece is nicknamed "Ellie")
    Alice

    Anna/Annabelle
    Lucy

  • Everly, Lia, lily, Lucy, Mabel, Abigail, Louisa, Delia

I think Amelia is super popular I have 3 friends with Amelia/Mia. Mia is my moms nn and If we had a girl instead of m, he would have been Eleanor Mia.  But future imaginary baby probably Won't reuse that.

    Ps: I freaking love sloane.

We only had one name picked out for our daughter (Luciana) but if we ever have another girl I think we might go with Cecilia. Love that name. I also love any variety of the Julie names. Julia, Juliette, Juliana,  etc.

Ive liked Caroline for a long time, Ill have to run that by DH again, I forget if I asked him about that one already or not. I was stuck on Alyce for most of this pregnancy (I loved that its very simple and traditional but uncommon and I thought it rocked when paired with Maren) but he finally shot that one down for good last week ;( I also like Kora/Cora a lot but with my last name its a mouthful. Ugh.  Lucy is super cute and grows well, but our old neighbor was Lucy and she never wore a bra so all DH and I think about is old lady boobs when we hear that name! haha.

  • I loved Cecelia and it was at the top of my list...until Jim and Pam named their daughter that on the Office.  As soon as that happened, DH said nope!

I have always, always loved the name Sarah.  I think it is very simple and very pretty.

Everly is a good one. The "ly" softens the R sound so it might be doable with our last name!  and yes, I freaking love Sloane too and it sounds good with my last name. Why is my DH such a stick in the mud with names?!. When we had Maren his suggestions were literally Lauren, Emily, and Madison. That is it. Really?

  • I don't have any other ideas...but Emma is really cute..and I swear not popular! Stick out tongue

I really like Natalie on your list.  Not a name I've considered, but cute, traditional, but not super popular. It's getting added to my, in the highly unlikely case we have a second child and it's a girl list.

I like versions of Julie too but both DH and I have cousins Julie/Julia so its too much for our family.  Rats.

DH LOVES Lauren but I think its too similar to Maren. Would Laurel or Lorelai be better?

What about Laura?  I may be biased, but I think it's a pretty name and certainly not popular right now, and would be more of a difference from Maren.  Lorelai is too complicated for me personally(and to be honest I don't even know how it's pronounced), but it's a pretty name.  I also like Laurel.

Oh I like Sara too but not only is it a mouthful with our last name (starts with the sound "rah") but its also the name of Dh's high school sweetheart so its totally off the table!  I tried to sell him on Serafina, but no dice.

What gave it away? ;-)  So is it Lora-lay?

  • ...And I didn't know until after Emma was already born that someone named their kid Emma on Friends and that is why it is so popular.  I didn't watch Friends either.  For as much tv as I watch, I obviously missed all the shows that started baby name trends.

Hahah. Youre right. I love Alba too, and I actually think I like it enough to withstand the eyebrow raises it will get because I completely understand that its not many people's style. DH loved it right after M was born and since then its lost its luster for him. Maybe I can repeat it in his ear while he sleeps and get him to subliminally come over to my side!

  • I have cousins who are all flower names that I really like:

    Laurel (nn Laurie)

    Heather

    Violet (nn Vi)

We have discussed a few girl names if we have #2 and it is a girl (I am praying for all boys at this point): Claire/Clare Rose, Lucy Kathleen, or Margaret (nn Maggie or Peggy) Helen.

  • Amy is kind of a rockin' name.

     ..I'm just saying ;)

Short. Simple.  Traditional without being too common.  Or you can mix it up and spell it Amie or Aimee.

Similar to Alba, my mom's middle name is Alma, which I also love. Unfortunately our last name is heavy on As, so it's out for a future potential daughter.
