the biggest losers are severley over weight and eat like major crap. it is a huge change.

you should tally all your calories over at livestrong.com i still use it to keep track of my weight when i loose/gain so i have record from 2008

I was just on their site checking out my BMR, (thanks larrysdarling). I need to burn 1662 calories a day to survive, if I eat 1200 a day and burn 500, I should be able to lose 4 lbs a week. I think I read that right. I'm eating 1200 calories a day now, and burning about 400-490 per work out. Times 4 weeks that's 16lbs. I'm eating 6 small meals, every three hours, high in lean protein, and high in veggies.

Ok, so you've only gone halfway in your calculations.

If your BMR is 1662 it means you need to CONSUME 1662 calories to basically do nothing but lay still all day.

In order to do things like get out of bed, wash dishes, play with the kid, exercise, you need additional calories.

In order to figure out your TDEE, or total daily expenditure, you have to calculate your activity level using a calculator called the Harris Benedict Equation. You can do that here:  http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/harris-benedict-equation/

Basically you have to take your BMR and multiply it by an activity level. If you are sedentary (not working out) you multiply your BMR x 1.2. That would put you at 1994 calories. That means you would have to EAT 1994 calories per day to just maintain your weight.

If you're moderately active you need to eat 2576 calories per day to maintain your weight.

To lose weight you need to eat somewhere in between your TDEE and your BMR. So if your TDEE was 2576 calories per day and you ate 2000, you could expect to lose about 1 lb per week.

You should not eat less then your BMR.

If you're eating 1200 calories a day you are eating less then what your body needs to function regularly. Quite frankly, the weight would be coming off you quickly for a time, you'd probably be low energy, you could be dehydrated and could have altered mental function if you did that for long. Also, you possibly wouldn't have the energy to do whatever exercise is burning 400-500 calories. And your hair could eventually fall out. And you could develop gallstones.

If you want to lose 4 lbs per week and you have moderate activity level, you need to burn/eliminate 1355 calories per day. That will take you down to an intake of 1221 calories per day, which is less then your BMR.

A more realistic, safe, attainable, and sustainable weight loss would be 8 lbs over 4 weeks. Two pounds a week. You'd have to cut out 900 calories per day and if you are exercising a few times a week that would give you a calorie intake of 1671 per day.

Finally, anyone attempting to do what you're discussing doing should be medically supervised. Have you mentioned this to the doctor managing your IVF? Will a major diet like this decrease your chances of getting pregnant or sustaining a pregnancy?

Honestly, you should really see a doctor or NP and an RD for some assistance with this.

  • Based on her height similar to my own 1200/1300 would be about right.  When i was at a desk job and I was actively trying loose 2 pounds a week I think my calories a day were around 1275 maybe 1300. Now if she is crazy exercising she'd need more.

See IDK her height/weight. I'm going based on the info she provided that her BMR is 1600.

  • Thanks for everyone for their insightful and helpful replies. I really do appreciate it. I can't see my nutritionist till next week, but she emailed me back with a menu based on the exercise routine from my trainer. I expressed the concerns I had after reading all the feedback, and she answered all of my questions.

Good luck with whatever you decide. Hope you can ultimately become a surrogate and be healthy and happy!
