So I don't know about you, but I'd like to get to know you ladies a little better. I'm pretty observational, so I've kind of inferred a lot of your occupations, but let's just put it all out there and quit guessing!
What do you all do for a living? And if you want, what does your H do?
Re: Occupations?
I got my Bachelors in Geology, worked as a project engineer for a ground improvement subcontractor for about 6 months and HATED IT, so I went back to school for a teaching license! I'm now studying to teach middle childhood (grades 4-9) math and science.
H is a financial analyst for Dots (the women's clothing company, very popular in the south apparently...) and he used to be a public accountant for Ernst and Young
:-D
I've been curious about this too!
I got my B.A. in English/Theatre and a Masters in Teaching (Grades 6-12). I wanted to teach high school up here, but the area we are in is a really bad area for teachers and it has been a struggle. (The district we live in laid off several teachers on the last day of school). So I somehow ended up as a college professor. Go figure! I teach Freshman Composition and Developmental Writing. I am also part time subbing on the days I don't teach to bring in some money to save for the house we are hoping to build.
In short: I'm a college professor
H is a Geologist (hey geojam224)! He has a B.S. degree and has been pursuing a Masters degree (it is what he doing now), but he HATES it. H has learned he really doesn't like being a lab rat. But, we're going to stick it out and finish his masters (august 2013 expected) and then he is planning to go back for a teaching license and hopefully teach earth science and chemistry on the high school level.
We're in a big transition period...hahaha
Your H is a geologist?! No effing way!! And I actually started out my masters + licensure for high school earth science and chemistry! CRAZY!
And I so did go already! I was the first "reply" post!
I work for my parents and they own their own business which is super great for me. It's a local appliance repair company. I work as the secretary/business manager/collector. I pretty much run the office and everything in it. This has NOTHING to do with my degree but that's ok.
H is contract labor and basically works for himself. Technically he works construction and tapes and floats drywall. This has nothing to do with his degree either but we are working on that.
I received my bachelor's in chemistry and business, and am now in my last year of pharmacy school. Can't wait to be done, 8 years post grad is getting ridiculous!
H is a chemist for a company that makes agricultural science products (herbicides/pesticides/fungicides)- he does QA work for them. We went to the same undergrad and were both chemistry majors, and that's how we met!
I have a B.S. degree in Zoology, spent some time working at the Detroit Zoo in the animal hospital and now I work as a licensed veterinary technician. I work at a local veterinary hospital where I do everything from surgery prep, injections, blood draws, restraint and everything in between. I absolutely love my job!
Husband works for the Home Depot corporation, he's part of the merchandising team for the local store. He's also still in the Army for another two years and is looking for a career change after that. Hopefully, we'll be moving to Michigan's Upper Peninsula within the next two years so keep your fingers crossed!!!!
I'm a sales rep for an elevator company! I don't sell the new elevators, but upgrades, modernizations, and maintenance. It's such a random and awesome job. My degree is in marketing, and I specialized in sales so it's working out well so far!
H is a consultant for a tax consulting company. His degree is in finance so we're two for two for now!
I have a bachelors in psychology with a minor in human services and a masters in human services with a concentration in mental health counseling. I had every intention of becoming a licensed mental health counselor for children upon completing my program and moving back to my hometown with DH. However upon interviewing for a counseling position I kind of realized my heart was not in it. While I love children, there is way too many rules, regulations, and guidlines I must follow on a daily basis, so much that I felt it got in the way of my practice, or rather what I really wanted to do.
The agency has many sections, one of which included an early childhood program I actually worked at during a summer off from school (during high school and college summers of I worked in various preschools in my hometown community). While they didn't have a position for me they offered me a sub position. I turned it down because I still wanted a full-time job. Soon a teaching position opened up which I applie for however I did not get it
I decided to take the sub postion which was basically a full-time position.
Now another teacher has left and I have been working in her position for about a month now and I will be interviewing for her job sometime in the coming weeks. Hopefully I get it because I absolutely love it! So my occupation is preschool teacher, my classroom has children ages 4-5, they are the best
DH has a bachelors in physical education and intended to be a physical education teacher, however he got a part time job at a human service agency during his last semester in college. Upon graduation he got promoted working with adults with mental disibilites and helping them with all aspects of their lives. When we moved he got a similar postion, but focuses more on job training and development. He loves what he does
It's funny how we sort of switched (teacher to human service worker), but we both love our jobs, and hopefully mine can become permanent
I have a BS in Civil Engineering (Structural concentration). I worked as a design engineer for a construction company that built power plants for 5 years, then hubby got a job in CO so I left my job in NC right before the wedding. I got a job here with a similar company doing civil/structural estimating for power jobs. I really like my new job, my department is awesome
Hubby has a BS in construction management and he worked on site for the same company I worked for, but he moved around from job to job and we wanted a job in one place where we could settle down, so he got his current job in the project controls department at our current company. He still travels some, but only for a few days to a week at a time instead of moving around every year.
My BFP Chart Danger Love Blog
I have a Bachelor's of Human Justice with a minor in Sociology. Ideally I wanted to work as a "Community Youth Worker" basically.. a youth probation officer.. however, those jobs are incredibly hard to come by... so I work as a legal assistant in a law firm. I mostly do the real estate transactions but help out in other areas as well (criminal, family, corporate). I like my job, it's never the same day twice. Though some of the family files that come through our office, as well as some of the estate files can make you lose faith in people pretty quick. Keeps work interesting though!
H is a carpenter. Him and his best friend run their own construction company doing mainly concrete work. Foundations, floors, driveways etc. Mostly structural stuff.
I have a BA in Sociology but I'm not "using" it for my career. I am a medical biller and coder and work at a family practice right now. Eventually I want to work in a hospital, preferably a mental health facility.
H is a strength and conditioning coach at well-known athletic facility. It's a private school for children who are training to become professional athletes. It's also a place that some pro athletes go to train. We both really like our jobs so we are lucky.
I have a BA in Sociology and I've been working in the mental health field since I graduated in 2000. Currently, I work for a hospital in a psychosocial rehabilitation program for adults with severe mental illness (similar to a day program). I love what I do, but I cannot advance without a master's degree. I started a program a few years back when I was single, but ended up withdrawing (I regret it) because of the finances. I am scheduled to start again this fall, but now that I'm pregnant I need to make sure the timing is right. I will figure it out within a week or so, because if I go back, I am quitting my job. (Yay!).
DH has a marketing degree and an MBA. (He also has a master's in sports marketing which he doesn't use.) He is a director of business intelligence for a logistics company. I know the title, but I really don't know what he does, TBH!
I have a BS in Civil Engineering and my MBA. I have been an engineer since I graduated. I am now managing projects that go out to consultants for MDOT. Its exactly the path I have planned on so I am really happy. Now trying to get switched to a closer office near Hs new job.
DH has his BS in Statics and Physiology and his MBA. He is a Senior Investment Analyst. He has been doing that for about 5 years now and recently got a promotion by switching companies.
I have my BA in Communications and soon MA in the same. My title is Assistant Director of Admissions at a small catholic college. I love my job and def use my degree every way possible! College kids keep me young and hopefully fun
My H is a sous chef at a golf club and is starting his own business. He made a crazy hot dog that has a bunch of other stuff on it. Its been selling at our local bars and he currently in talks with some big companies to sell it them...fingers crossed! He been becoming some what of a local celebrity being on the local radio stations and stuff kinda cool and overwhelming@
I'm not on here as often anymore, but like to hop on every now and then and check in with you ladies.
I got my B.S. in technical theatre, and then promptly decided I was burnt out on it (my college was pretty intense and did a crapload of shows a year), so I've worked a lot of odds and ends over the past 10 years, mostly in office management, but in February I decided I'd had enough, so I quit and became a bridal registry consultant at one of the big name stores, and I LOVE it! I also work as a DOC on the side.
H is a software architect at a big company. To be honest, I'm not sure what all he does, as it's all over my head, heh. But he loves it, and it brings in the bacon, so I don't ask too many questions. :-P
Planning Bio! Updated 05.02.12
i have a degree in medical assisting and my last job was in a mental health group home but i am out of work right now due to an injury. Unfortunately I'm going to need to pick a new career it seems and really am at a loss...
hubby works in his fathers shop they are machinists and make parts for just about anything. from medical equipment to government jobs it varies day to day.
Love this!
I have a BS in Biology and Psychology, a MS in Mental Health Counseling and I am currently working on my PhD I have a year and a half left to go. I've been working as a corporate trainer for the last 2.5 yrs.
H is a Revenue Agent and works for the IRS.
Baby on Board - My Blog
I am a legal assistant at a law firm, I do all of the scheduling for hearings and the like.
H is an auto tech for a company that shall not be named on social media
Great topic! I love learning more about all of the May ladies that have helped me so much
I have a BS in Psychology, and went through the program to become certified to teach K-4. During Student Teaching, I realized it wasn't really what I wanted, or expected it to be. I wanted to teach, but now a days I feel like that's the last thing teachers do. Many years later, I now do work for a nationwide payroll company. Basically companies outsource their payroll to us. I'd love to work for a smaller company doing their payroll, or A/R or A/P stuff. We'll see.
I drive a zamboni on the side.
H has a small business management BS, and runs his dad's business. They manufacture specialty electrical wire and cable. His folks live in NC, and so it's just him here to run things most of the time. It gives him a lot of flexibility, which is nice, but at the same time, I think sometimes he feels stuck.. it could be really awkward if he ever chose to leave the company!
I have a BA in Biology, and got my MS in Molecular and Cell Biology this past December.
I'm currently a Research assistant. The project I'm working on now is a clinical trial that is more public health related than molecular biology, but I like it... It's been great learning something a bit different, and I still have my time in the lab too.
H is a Chemical engineer. He works in a lab making special restoration paints, epoxies, cements, etc.
I am trained in social service work, have yet to get a job in it. In the meantime I am nannying.
H does finish carpentry for a commericial company (so they do cabinates and shelves and stuff for stores....walmarts, grocery stores, occasionally offices.) Technically he is an installer, but because he is trained in carpentry ends up working in the shop more then installing.
My Blog:Through My Eyes
I am a "public service administrator" for the state correctional system, but I'm really just the Director's assistant. I got my BS in Criminal Justice. While I'd probably enjoy doing much more hands on work, it's really interesting to see the different areas of corrections at work. Hubby is an industrial machine mechanic for a company that makes paper boxes.
This is the coolest thing ever!!
I am an accountant - sounds boring, but I have a BS in Finance and also am a licensed CPA (Certified Public Accountant). Started out in auditing and (until my company went bankrupt), was responsible for our Group financial statements. Pretty interesting since I got to know a lot of different people around the company and had a lot of exposure to Executive Management and the Board. Now that I'll be out of a job in a month, I need to think about what's next...
H is also in finance - he has 2 Masters degrees in Economics and also in Economic History and has his CFA license (Certified Financial Analyst). He works in the investment strategy group at a large insurance company which he really likes.
I have my BS in Marketing. I work at an online marketing firm doing a lot of Google Ads and banners, email design, and just monitoring our 30 or so clients webpages, and what they spend on Google each day, and creating new keywords for them.
DH has his BS in Finance. He is a financial advisor, and working alongside his dad right now selling life insurance. He also owns his own lawn care business, so he is usually pretty busy in the summer.
Well, it looks like your husband and I have something in common
I got a BA and Masters in Accountancy and am CPA certified tax accountant. My husband is an engineer with an Oil and Gas company.
Literally.
It gets pretty chilly out there!
I don't do it often anymore, but it definitely gets some great reactions, both saying I do it, and when I'm actually doing it. It's funny that most people will drop what their doing and plaster their face on the boards when they see a zamboni pull onto the ice. Even grown men. haha. I love it, so even though I don't work often, I keep my key, just in case!
H is a CPA also, he's been talking about getting his CFA and CFE as well. I think he's crazy ;-)
