Kindergarten pre-registration

Re: Kindergarten pre-registration

I have a few years to be thinking about this but our district is 1/2 day also. All the kids at our daycare get PM session. A friend whose daughter is currently in kindergarten said she is very bored and actually learns more from the teacher at daycare in the morning before school. That in her class they are doing letters and numbers that she learned in the pre-K program the year before.

That is disappointing that her K program is so basic, hopefully they will get to more challenging curriculum before the end of the year.

Always something for us parents!! The bus would pick up DD right outside our house. So trying to think in years to come how we can bypass daycare altogether. doubtful. :(

i worry about this as well. I've heard from quite a few people that their kids were bored because they knew their letters/numbers already. Although those schools did have some programs for the advanced kids (but those were in full day)

  • And my question is why have the testing if you are going to teach as those some kids do not know their letters or numbers?? Again I have a few years to worry about but heck it will be here soon.
  • Beth,

i know you are in my area- you mars or sv?

  • I'm just confused b/c everyone always talked about how much harder K is than it was when we were kids, which is why I rushed to get Lanna into 2 yrs of preschool! Now it sounds like she's going to be bored!

I think the extra year of preschool is still a good idea to get used to a classroom setting when your kid isn't in daycare.  I would ask around your neighborhood if there are kids in K now, and how they like it. I know our neighbor (who is quite bright) loves her K class and is starting to read. So it must not be that basic.

I'm in Mars, but SV is also half day Sad though I'm not sure when their process begins.

  • Our K program is full day, but I think full and half day kids still have to learn the same things at the end of the day.  It's not like going in to first grade full day K'ers have a leg up and can read better than 1/2 day kids.   Also, while they do focus on letters in K, it's more of a practical use of the letter.  Not just a "this is the letter B, this is how you write it".  They do practice writing letters/words...but they use the letters to make words and learn sight words.   Noah was reading by Christmas break the year he was in K.  And he had been to 2 years of pre-school, the last year being a full day daycare program, and he was not bored at all.

i definitely think it is harder now but kids are also doing preschool and even multiple years of preschool so they start off knowing more than maybe they used to.  I also have heard it from those in full day so maybe it's because they are spending more time on things because they can vs half day.

All of this. Heather went into K knowing most of what she was "supposed to" and more. She counted to 100 in her K assessment...much to her teacher's surprise. But she still has to work to learn to read and they are doing basic addition and subtraction. Not to mention the weekly homework, which was not a part of pre-k. It's not super-hard, it just requires a certain time commitment each week.

  • OMG.

I never thought about looking into Kindergarten registration!!! Even though I signed him up for Preschool this time last year and I just saw on the calendar that it's that time!!  He is going to Preschool at a Catholic School, but we are sending him to public for kindergarten... I better look into that!!

It looks like for ours we have to go to the school to get on a mailing list for a packet to help aid in the formal registration process in March. Clearly there is no easy way to register for Kindergarten.

Lanna's preschool doesn't bus to the new elementary school she's attending now that we moved, so I either need to find another one that does or figure something else out.

This, but I am lucky Faith's school will literally be right over our hill! So either Randy can take her before work or I can take her before work in the pm! But Mandy we do have nights where our girls can "tour the school and meet teachers" before we do the whole testing process! We are going to the one Feb 23rd, it's called "a night with the little knights" ....I just know I maybe the parent the bus driver hates to death, because her bus stop will probably be on a main drag that's always busy(rt 993 in Irwin)  and I will not take that as a bus stop lying down.....I know she can catch it in a safer place, and well there's the fact that my bus garage now shares radio frequency with Norwin's,so I am teaching her to have them call my PT bus route # or my dads,if she gets lost or forgets to get off!
