I missed the beginning, first 10 or 15 minutes, so I'll have to catch that later.
Chuckled in the middle. $9 minimum wage? Yeah, that's gonna work. And "bang for your educational buck"? *snort* Speechwriters trying a little too hard there. :P
Thought he really saved the best for last (cuz I'm into the sappy stuff at the moment). Loved the call-outs for the woman from Florida and the police officer from Wisconsin. The line about the thousand gun deaths since Newtown really got me. And the hormonal pregnant lady in me almost cried at the end:
When a gunman opened fire on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin and Brian was the first to arrive, he did not consider his own safety. He fought back until help arrived and ordered his fellow officers to protect the safety of the Americans worshiping inside, even as he lay bleeding from 12 bullet wounds. And when asked how he did that, Brian said, ?That?s just the way we?re made.?
That?s just the way we?re made. We may do different jobs and wear different uniforms, and hold different views than the person beside us. But as Americans, we all share the same proud title -- we are citizens. It?s a word that doesn?t just describe our nationality or legal status. It describes the way we?re made. It describes what we believe. It captures the enduring idea that this country only works when we accept certain obligations to one another and to future generations, that our rights are wrapped up in the rights of others; and that well into our third century as a nation, it remains the task of us all, as citizens of these United States, to be the authors of the next great chapter of our American story.
Re: State of the Union, anyone?
More spending, and no budget cuts.
Thanks Obama for putting my future grandchildren in debt.
I LOVED this part too. He mentioned this in his Re-Election night speech too.
riiiight. If your future grandchildren are in debt, I don't see how that will be Obama's fault. What a strange statement. If you want to blame a president (which is pretty ignorant to begin with), why not Bush?
ahhh...the blaming of bush still after all this time. LOL.
I missed it because I was at orchestra rehearsal and didn't really want to watch it anyways. DH recorded it and will probably watch it tonight. I'm really only interested in Rubio's reply. I had read in a yahoo article today that he was really passionate about the gun control segment of his speech. I wish he was that passionate about the economy, but that would be asking too much
I don't blame him for being slightly more passionate about preventing the slaughter of innocent children than about the economy.
Why are you only really interested in hearing remarks from Rubio? Is it fair for that to mean you only are interested in hearing remarks from people you agree with?
And don't you sort of have to know the context of what he's replying to in order to appreciate the reply in the first place?
nope i don't need to know. correct me if i'm wrong, but did his speech include climate change, green energy, gun control, investing in education, and maybe just a tiny bit on the economy? His speeches are all the same to me....talking points and not much more
Without hearing the specifics of the actual proposals, isn't the 'reply' then just another set of talking points from the other side of the aisle? What?
Actually, for that matter, did Rubio/his speechwriters even have the content of the SotU before writing the rebuttal? ::skims speech text:: American exceptionalism, God, Solyndra, Obamacare, "climate change", wanting to decrease spending so long as it doesn't affect old people or the military, single parents and godlessness as the root of America's problems...
Never mind, carry on.
Nothing is Obama's fault. He is perfect!! Does he have a fan-club? Oh wait I think I may have found it here.
Her grandchildren's hypothetical debt would not be the fault of Barack Obama, however.
1) it's kinda weird that you would only be interested in the reply and not the actual speech the reply was in response to. It's like you have no interest in forming an opinion for yourself, and only want to regurgitate what you are told by others. Oh, wait...
2) My what about Bush question was in response to blaming the pp's hypothetical grand children's hypothetical debt on Obama. Bush would really be a more appropriate person to blame if she wanted to be ignorant and blame a single person for our country's economic meltdown.
And no, I will never quit bringing Bush up. He was the worst president of my lifetime and presided over the country for 8 years as it went from thriving to diving. You may have a really short memory, but I don't.
vlagrl29 can't even figure out her health care. She was complaining that Obamacare decreased HSA accounts. Turns out she doesn't even know the difference between a HSA, FSA and deducting health care cost on your taxes. HSA accounts actually increased this year. She will just spit out whatever someone tells her. Obamacare is the type of reform that actually helped her because it covers pre-existing conditions. But she still hates it. She can't really tell me why but she does.
I had to delete most of what I had because it was just too mean but time and time again, I see her voting against her own self interest. I just can't figure out who is telling her to vote for things against her own self interest. I don't know if its her husband or what. You can never tell me what you specifically don't believe in. What specific policies don't you believe in? "Anything with pork in it?" You do realize that he signs laws but does not write them and if pork is in them, it is most likely coming from congress. Of course, he can encourage certain policies but congress is the one that creates and passes laws.
If you think I am hating on you, clearly you do not know me b/c it would get much more brutal and personal. If you would like me to go there...clearly I can. Just say the word.
Lastly, I will get a life, as soon as you get a job so that you can...I don't know...have a medically required surgery and pay for it! If you subscribe to the Republican "we built it motto," then I am pretty sure your doctor would like to be paid for the work he/she does. Why do they have to go to work, pay their staff and wait for months for you to do a payment plan before they get the money? So I will be happy to get a life when you get a damn job and stop mooching off the rest of us in health care. Thank you very much. And I still have not even gone there yet with you...just say the word. Please.
Min Wage needs to be raised by a quarter, badly. The Republicans won't pass it, but it's a good issue for Obama to repeatedly hit them on. He can bloody their noses pretty bad on an issue there's no way they will surrender on.
I do think there is a strong wind to enact some (weak) bipartisan immigration reform.
I expect the next couple of years will be really interesting, as Obama has nothing to lose and everything to gain by playing offense hard. He's got a lot of wedges he can drive against the House Republicans. On the flip side, a lot of the existing Republicans are so gerrymandered they have no incentive to compromise. So we may be in for a couple years of terrible governance.
uh exactly how am i mooching??? sorry if I don't have $3,000 laying around ready to blow, we just started off on our marriage 3 years ago and had a baby 2 years ago. I have a job and so does my DH, we don't live off the government. you are just a f@cking hateful B!!!TCH
Paying for a medical treatment recommended by a doctor is not "blowing money." Eating Steak N' Shake on a Friday night is. When you don't pay your medical bills and go on a payment plan, how do you think the doctor pays his staff or the hospital pays the doctors or staff depending on their affiliation? Ding...Ding...Ding...People who are paying their bills have to get charged a little more to be able to cover people like you who will be paying their bills over time. So, I will gladly pay for you treatment so you can go to Steak N' Shake. It is no different then living off the government. You are living off someone. I might be a hateful B!!tch but I am a self sufficient one. Now go get a job that allows you to pay your damn bills...since you "Built It." Stop mooching off of everyone and acting like you are self-sufficient.
last I checked I pay my bills on time and hospitals offer a payment plan so at least you will pay the bill and NOT, ignore it like others. I AM self sufficient. We eat out ONE time a week, yeah that's splurging for us. we don't do anything else, I don't spend money except on bills and we are paying more than the minimum on the other hospital bill. and I did build my business. Our house is paid off so I think most people are not even in that position. and at least I love my job and I"m not sitting at some office job counting down the hours til I can go home. I make about the same amount of money every month as when i was in the corp world. none of that is really your business.
Do you really think this is the best time to focus on minimum wage though? I certainly agree that it needs to better keep up with the actual cost of living, but I feel like the time to do a hike is when the economy is doing better, not while everyone is still complaining over the burden healthcare is putting on employers. Too many new costs all at once will be unsustainable for business, especially smaller ones, and I'd guess that most min. wage employees would rather be making 7.25 and struggling than not have a job. Let's at least let the dust settle as the new ACA regulations continue to take effect this year, and then see where we stand.
The amateur economist in me is skeptical, LD.
Hey now!
Don't blow up at her for the $28 she spent at the fast food joint for her family (to eat a meal) when you blew a few hundred bucks on Indians tickets to see if you could resell them for a profit over the same weekend, taking a risky gamble in the process. She was eating. You were scalping.
Also, it's a low blow here to invoke her innocent answer to your post over there on MM. What is this? You're trolling on MM to make "gotcha" responses to poster here on P&CE?
I haven't seen anywhere that it's written or stated that people with medical bills cannot have a night out for dinner with their family every once in awhile or weekly for that matter. WOW! You are hard!
Other posters: I'm referring to Jan's MM thread on "How Spendy was Your Weekend?"
that would be common sense. I do like your train for thought
ML - thanks, you are a kind person unlike this twat. I had no idea anyone found my life so interesting as to keep tabs on me and my measly little dinner dates. I had a $5 coupon and I had just booked 3 weddings that week and had stashed half of that $$ in our savings. we were not even going to go out that weekend but I felt generous. It looks like this wedding season is going to be even better than last year. I've booked 5 weddings in 3 weeks. I have also gotten 2 new violin students in 2 weeks as well. I stay home with my DD during the day cause we can NOT afford daycare. I have worked jobs I've hated, then one day I decided to take a chance and start my own business with what I was born to do, play music. I've never been happier in my life.....maybe you (jan) need to find some happiness in your life instead of taking your anger out on me. besides I thought you were all FOR helping out those less fortunate than you, hence why you love your president so much.
Jan8, you are something else. Wow.
I assume you are a liberal and a democrat. I realize that is an assumption, but it seems valid given what you have said.
So, my question is how your basic views align with what you are sayig here in this post?
I thought liberals supported all those people on welfare and believe strongly in skittles for the poor. They also don't believe in any thing to do with bootstraps and earning what you get.
Now I see you attacking someone who has a job and is not on welfare for paying their medical bills over time (but paying them) and having the nerve to go out to an inexpensive place to eat.
I assume if she were a democrat, it would be fine with you if she didn't pay her bills at all and ate out on the government's dime all the time. Isn't that the liberal platform?
Don't you constantly support those people who do nothing but live on welfare? And don't you actively support their right to skilltes?
Your double standard is showing. And so is your utter ignorance.
I think you owe the other poster a big apology. And maybe you should reexamine your true feelings about some topics.
You are showing how little you actually believe in what you spew on these boards.
You are also very rude and seem proud to be a bullying hardaz.
Really makes me want to be a democrat like you.
Oh, double wow. I just read through the bearing fruit thread.
So Jan8, am I reading right that you claim to be a Christian? I never would have guessed that.
Is it good that no one would ever guess that you are a Christian from your posts?
Also, I would like to quote you in that post. You said "As you know, sometimes in life we buy things and pay for them later".
So buying "things" and paying over time is okay, but paying for medical care over time is bad?
