Back and need career vent/advice
Re: Back and need career vent/advice
I think you've gotten some good advice, but I'll just throw one more thought in.
If you can afford to take a substantial amount of time off, I'd consider getting involved in some volunteer work. Even if it's just 10 hours a week helping some local nonprofits with their mailings or their bookkeeping. It could really help you think about what you want to be doing with your life, and you'd diversify your resume which would help big time in applying to whatever program you decide to do.
It's been pretty busy actually...with the holidays and all. Tomorrow I'm driving down to NY to visit with my family and friends for a bit. I think I'll finally get into a routine when I return to VT ..and then I'll start to figure out what my next step(s) will be.
Keep us posted!
PS....I wanted to add that I think you should definitely take time to relax, visit family, friends, etc before you try to figure things out. I'm not sure whether you are religious at all (for some reason I'm thinking you were brought up Catholic or are Catholic), but you might want to spend time praying about it and/or just sitting in church. When I return to VT, one of the things I plan on doing is attending daily mass (at least a couple of days) and sitting in front of the Blessed Sacrament for guidance.
MD, that job sounds amazing and exciting right about now. I've heard of many who have done it and I also have a few friends who do something like manage programs for the Food Network (how cool is that?).
ESF, thanks for the suggestion. I plan on doing charity work and hopefully start a foundation.
2Vermont, thanks for the suggestion regarding the time off and prayer. I was raised Catholic but am mainly non-denominational these days. However, I believe strongly in the power of prayer since it has helped me so much at different points in my life. My husband also suggested that I make sure I relax and spend a few weeks just doing fun activities before I jump into studying for the LSAT/GMAT and any community service activities. I will keep you posted and I hope you do the same! I am very eager to share experiences, especially with women who are going through the same things.
