Honestly, I could care less. The world is in shambles and Obama has his work cut out for him. I have yet to know the choices he will ultimately make and how they will potentially impact me but I am along for the ride.
Now about all that "hype" discussed in the post below. I won't comment on Obama's race or childhood at this point....I think it has been discussed enough for one day. However I would have been much more impressed with our nation back in 2000 when Gore was overruled by the electoral college vote and our mere "democratic" popular vote meant little in terms of electing our next official. Now, there is where I would have liked to have seen some tru hype from our country. The electoral college is so antiquated it should be thrown in the Hudson for crying out loud. And yet....there it is and still exists.
Better yet, I would be ecstatic if our nation could also think outside of the 2 party box we are stuck in and take an honest look at some of the other presidential candidates. However, those other candidates don't receive the media coverage of our fellow libertarians and green parties do they? Thus, they will continuously get swept under the rug as we focus on our 2 parties that receive coverage and then get elected by our fabulous electoral vote. Excellent, carry on now....
Re: so about this presidential election....
Its amazing how different perspectives can be.
I care a lot about this one. A lot a lot.?
Nope...not trying to be right or awesome or anything else....
The 2000 election should have instigated riots at the white house and across the country. Our democracy is a sham and yet our nation is so self indulgent and simple minded that we only think to riot and raise cain during the world series, the superbowl, etc. How does any of this make sense to educated people?
1) I am not sure why you are bringing up something that happened 8 years ago. What's the point? I am a die hard dem and was upset too. But why focus on it now?
2) In regards to your other question- ?I will answer it with my own. Do you HONESTLY not see the significance and the IMPACT of *this* one? Really?
And of course I care about the rest.?
Well I didn't care about the last 10-20 years because I was only 6-16 and cared more about barbie dolls in the beginning and boys at the latter.
I was very active in the campaign 4 years ago. It was the first time I could legally vote. I read what each canidate stood for and what their platforms were and voted based on that. I did the same for this election. I got all of the information I could from reliable non-biased sites or from the canidates actually campaign sites.
A lot of people don't do any research before they vote. People are very stuck in the "i'm a republican I'm a democrat" though process to look around.
Oh, and for the record, I was DEVASTATED when Kerry lost.
Gore I was upset......?
oh, wow. I just read lillyow's post. I can't really even finish it.
O.M.G.
?
Well, I don't believe I said that I did not see the significance of this election.
You ask why I bring up issues from years ago and I will say because the media portrayal was not as passionate or emphatic in 2000 as what I have witnessed in the current presidential election. Saddens me to think that fox, cnn, msnbc, etc seem to have that much of a stranglehold on how we think and how perceive information.
For the nation's sake, I hope Obama is able to make some significant changes. However, I think that there may be some unrealistic expectations on him that in 4 years he will be able to turn the economic depression around and create jobs, balance the budget, put a dent in the deficit, etc.
Do go on..
Uh, you said "I could care less".
How exactly did you expect that to be interpreted?
Also, as a news junkie, I distinctly remember the media covering the Gore thing extensively. ?
?
I said it above. Its SHOCKING to me that you don't get it. Now that I read your reasoning in the rest of the post, I see where you are coming from. A little.
?
Question: Do you/did you know many black ppl? Did you learn their history at all? I am not being sarcastic. I am asking.
I went to public schools that were pretty much 50/50 with the racial backing. I would never say though that this is my black friend Rachel (made up name) I just always said this is my friend Rachel.
I was brought up to not take race into consideration when thinking of a person. So I don't view our new president and a black president just as our new president.
Sorry girls, I was feeling like hurling (m/s).
Lilly, ?I am starting to see I think what you are saying.....I am wondering if my students (about 50% AA) get it as well. But maybe that's a good thing. I don't know.?
During the election process I did teach my students about the electoral college process. Please keep in mind this country is NOT a democracy it is a republic. We want to think we are a democracy, but we are not. I 100% agree that the electoral college needs to be elinminated. It was created years ago for good reason, but it is just not necessary anymore. But in order to eliminate it they need to Amend the constitution which is HUGE. I know it has been done before, that is how they got rid of slavery and got women the right to vote. so when it needs to be done, it needs to be done.
I think this elections hype is different than the Gore/Bush fiasco because that was just depressing, it was frustrating, it was sad and gave us little hope for our future. This is positive and upbeat and gives us great hope for the future. SO the hype is of a different breed, if that makes any sense.
all i know is i am an educated person and i had plentyyyy of fun freaking out for our world champs!!!
but all kidding aside, i am completly enthralled by this whole thing. guess i am weird. i have had the tv tuned to abc since 8:45am when i woke up and haven't turned it off since. i will say that i did not vote for him because i stand firm on one issue that differs from the liberals/dems, but i am realllly excited for the future with obama regardless of my certain stance.
It wasn't me you're referring to, but I agree with her! I truly care about this next four years because I think for once, we have a president who has a good balance of realism and optimism. He knows he's in for a long, hard fight, but if his actions can keep up with his words then at least he'll be moving in the right direction.
Caring about this current term doesn't mean I didn't care about the previous ones, it just means I got outvoted. Oh no wait, I didn't ACTUALLY get outvoted, we all just got screwed by the current system and got stuck with a puppet instead of the person we actually elected. I totally agree that the electoral college is outdated and needs to disappear completely.
The hype around the new president makes me really nervous. There is so much of a 'new 'messiah' attitude that no politican can ever live up to. It is going to be an even bigger crash down when people have to realize he is only human, and has to work within the restraints of the government and the two party system.
I so wish we could abolish political parties. Two groups rule over the country, and everyone has to suffer their choices. I am not part of a political party, and I hate that they have so much power over who I get the ability to vote for. This last election I didn't like either choice, and picking the lesser of two evils gets more depressing every year.
