Poll: Do you plan your reading?

I know with the seasonal challenges, there is some amount of planning in order to complete them, and the serious book bloggers must have to plan a bit in order to get reviews done, so I'm curious.

Do you plan what you're going to read next?  How far out are you thinking about what to read next?

Ha! Nope. But I'm no longer a blogger, and I don't participate in challenges, so maybe that's why.

About 50% of the time I have some idea of what I'll be reading next, but nothing further ahead than that.

  • I used to when I actually kept up with my blog, but I don't anymore.  I can plan to read a few books during a time frame for a discussion, but that's about it.  I would rather pick up whatever I feel like reading at the moment.

  • I have a general idea based on library holds, book club discussion dates, and what I'm in the mood for. I wouldn't say I plan more than 2-3 books out though.

  • To answer my own questions, I don't plan much.

When I know I'm nearing the end of an audiobook, I'll either stop at the library to browse and pick something up so that I have it ready, or if there is something in particular that I want, I'll request it from ILL in advance.  For print books, mostly I try to read books that I own and haven't read yet, but now and then something comes up that I want to read right away, in which case I'll order it from the library far enough in advance that I can finish one thing before it comes in.

I never plan further out than my next book.
  • I am not really a planner.  But I do try to read about 1 non-fiction book to every 2 fiction books.  And I always have a regular hardcover or paperback book and a kindle book being read at the same time.  I like to bring my ipad to the gym and my regular book for my lunch breaks at work.

  • Only when it comes to my book club meetings, I have to plan when I check the books out to make sure I get them in time and give myself enough time to read them but aside from that, no.

  • I usually plan at least one of the books for the month which would be my IRL book club choice but otherwise I kind of just let the books choose me.

  • I really just read whatever comes in at the library next based on my holds. If I have nothing on hold that is ready to be picked up (which is rare) I will browse through my kindle selection and find something to read until something becomes available.

I try to plan for new releases and library holds/due dates.  It doesn't always work out that way - I had planned to re-read The Shining before Dr. Sleep arrives, but the arrival of The Dream Thief killed that idea.  Hopefully I can finish TDT quickly so that I can make a little headway.
I do try to read short books between really long books.  I read on the metro a few times a week, so I try to have an ebook or a small paperback for that.

Edit: I'm kind of glad I didn't set any goals for myself this year because I'm reading longer books and not putting off a book that I want to read just because it would put me off my goal.

  • I usually only plan ahead for one book. But sometimes, like this week, 5 books on hold come in at the same time at the library. So, I've got my next 2 weeks all planned out. Lets see if I can do it!
  • No and this is why I have like 6 books going at the same time.

  • It comes and goes in waves. Sometimes I'm all about the new releases and will plan around them and library holds. Other times I'll just walk into the library and pick something. It depends on my mood.

  • When I'm getting close to finishing something I usually look through my Kindle and my Goodreads TBR list and the latest Friday What Are You Reading? post and see what I'm in the mood for next.

I love ebook borrowing from my library, but this throws off my my very whim-based system. Sometimes I'll read whatever hold comes in, but sometimes I'll just remove my hold and decide to read it later.

  • I generally don't plan more than 1 book ahead, unless I have an ebook I've borrowed from the library or library books out. I try to read library books in somewhat quick of a manner in case other people are waiting for them.

  • I start the year with a big spreadsheet and generally plan my year based on length, interest, season, how busy certain months are. I usually do well for about five months and then I start changing what I read when. I still try to choose from my list at least half the time.

  • I have to admit I'm a complete planner. I do normally have things planned out 4-5 books ahead of time. That being said I do flex it around quite a bit depending on library holds etc....

    Seriously?  That's impressive!
  • It sounds good but I buy so many books that planning to read one usually gets trumped by the book still sitting in the bag.

  • I don't do challenges, so the only time I really plan out what I'm reading is if there's something coming out soon that I really want to read, or if I decide to do a series re-read. Aside from that, I'm a fly by the seat of my pants reader.

  • I sort of have an idea, but I usually just go with whatever impulse strikes me. I do plan when I want to do reviews on the blog, so I've been sticking to my plan a bit more lately.
