summer vacation

On a snowy cold day... it is way more fun to think about summer and vacation. Anyone have theirs booked already? We always go to the OBX with another family. Well this year they are going to Disney. So we are on our own. Part of me thinks why not try somewhere new. Still driveable. But we do love the OBX. And my thing is I want a location where we have a condo or house. It is hard with Julia and napping in a hotel room with the rest of us milling around.

We have done Kiawah, Isle of the Palm, Dafuski Island (this is a bit of a commitment since there are no cars on the island), North Myrtle, and Hilton Head in SC. My sister goes to Sunset Beach every year.  I will say that I am not a huge Myrtle fan. I think the Redneck Riveria nickname is for good reason.

  • oh fun topic!!  We are changing it up this year, too....and doing something that is totally out of my comfort zone (and to be honest probably not something I'd choose for myself!).  we're vacationing at Flathead Lake in Montana.  Brian's sister's husband's family (follow that?) owns a house right on the lake and have generously invited all of us (my MIL, FIL, SIL and her husband, plus us) for a week.

If you know me at all, you know I'm totally not outdoorsy so a vacation that involves a lake, mountains and most likely nature would not be my first pick.  BUT, I know it's a great and generous offer to let us stay and the kids will LOVE IT.  I figure if nothing else, it will be super peaceful to read my books and magazines lake-side
    :)

  • I understand that one.... DH suggested getting a house near deep creek and I guess beach is just more my style. That sounds really neat though. Very fun!!

Kris- my SIL family like Sunset beach too. That would be one for the list. :)

This would be my husband's dream vacation, especially if he could fly fish. I am thinking about a trip to Michigan this summer. He isn't a beach guy but I think he would enjoy Lake Michigan, even if it is freezing in the middle of summer.

  • We have gone to Ocean City, MD for years and although we really like it, we wanted to try something different this year.

We are headed to Sandbridge, VA and we (Mom, Dad, Brother, SIL & nieces)  are staying in a 4 bedroom condo right on the beach. We decided to do beachfront this year since my twin nieces who will be 10 months old at the time will be with us (lots of gear to take to the beach!). Not to mention, it's getting harder for Hayden to walk long distances. We arrive on the 4th of July so I am really excited about that!

It's one of Brian's dream vacations, too :)  I'm sure there will be fishing involved.  I have to admit, I was scared when we first started talking about going....it's so far out of my comfort zone...but now I've warmed up to the idea and I'm excited to go.  Now, if only the price of flights would drop so that we can book them and I can stop stalking them every day!!

  • I thought about Sandbridge too. Can I ask what realtor you used? :)
  • We are going to Rehoboth in June.  We usually go Labor Day week, but with Mason in school and some other commitments this summer, we are going early this year.

We've rented a house in the past, but for the last 2 years have rented a condo.  I was resistant at first, but it is right on the beach, has a pool, and a little park.  I'd like to try another beach one year, but I am loyal to Rehoboth.  I also get cranky about anything more than a 6-7 hour car drive. (I'm worse than the kids, lol!)

  • We always do sandbridge and just love it there. It's so quiet and a great family vacation. If you're not looking for much more than a beach, that's your place. We've used both seibert and sandbridge realty and they're pretty interchangable.

We are going to some mountain lake place in NC over 4th of July. Going with DH's parents and brothers. It is definitely not my pick and totally dh's. He is also all about fishing and outdoorsy stuff while I just want a beach! It doesn't sound too bad...it has the beach area by the lake and some nice pools along with spa and I like some outdoor stuff like kayaking. Just not my ideal trip. We are renting a house for everyone and Dh already has it booked. First time he actually plans far in advance for something.

I'm actually starting to plan vacation for 2016. I desperately need a warm weather getaway in the winter. We were supposed to do it this year but it all feel through so I will have it next year. I'm looking at renting a villa in the Caribbean.

I'd like to fit in another disney trip sometime but I hate the idea of going during a school break or summer and I really don't want to take dd out of school so not sure about that!

I really like Kiawah. We've stayed in a rental place there the year before my in laws moved to SC. Now we stay with the in laws and they live about 15/20 mins away. So we go over there often.

  • We're going back to Turks and Caicos in June.  YAY!  I'm so excited!  I'm also hoping that things work out and we take a mini-vacation to see my folks in Florida over Easter.

Emmy, that would be DH's dream vacation, too!  I bet you have a great time!
Soooo jealous. I keep hoping maybe 10 year anniversary we will go back. Ha.
  • Kiawah is my absolute favorite, with Hilton Head being a close second. I love that it is an easy drive to Charleston from Kiawah. Last year, we did drive to Savannah from Hilton Head and that wasn't a bad drive either.

    Looooooove Hilton Head!

  • The montana trip sounds really cool Emmy. I can imagine getting flights will be pricey, but the rest of the trip sounds wonderful, and I'm not an outdoorsy person.

My sister's inlaws have a house in Sanbridge that we used. We loved it there. Leigh Ann, I think you'll really enjoy it!

We're doing a family vacation next month to Florida, with my sister, her husband, and my parents. That's our only travel plan for 2015. We're saving up for a Hawaii trip in 2016.

  • We have more planned this year than usual, though financially only one is really big.

Spring break week we are taking a cruise, the same one we did 3 years ago, though the boat has been upgraded.

In June, DH's aunts are renting a house in Brigantine, so we will be visiting for some shore time.

July will be our usually long weekend camping trip.

September will be a long weekend in NYC around our anniversary.

Dd keeps asking when we can go back to Florida. 2016 at the earliest. ;-)

  • We don't really do a summer vacation (I'm off at Christmas for work and DH takes off with me). However we are discussing taking a trip to Seattle in the fall and I'm hoping it works out:)
  • We're undecided.  DH wants to go to Ocean City.  But I'm in favor of doing a smaller vacation, because I'm gunning for going back to Disney in 2016.

I love Disney, but the thought of going during a hot or busy season totally turns me off from the idea.  We're purposely planning to go next year because DS won't be in school yet, so only DD will be missing a week.
But, I think Disney is worth missing school for :-)

Agreed. I can't stand the thought of going when it's hot or crowded, so when we go back (which is looking like 2017) we'll pull the kids from school again.  I don't love doing that, but we'll try our best to overlap it with a week that they at least already have a day or 2 off (like the first week in November, they are always off Monday/Tuesday) then they're only missing 3 days.

We went spur of the moment late may/early june last year when Steve had to go to orlando for work. I wasn't sure what i'd think of being there when it was really hot (it was 90s every day of our trip) and it was really crowded because we were there for the 24 hour celebration AND Memorial Day Weekend.

Despite all that, I actually really liked being there for the hot weather. While Steve worked, I took the boys to the parks in the morning. We'd get there early and do rides, have lunch somewhere and by back to the hotel by 1 p.m. We'd spend the afternoon swimming and resting, and then we'd have dinner with Steve when he got back.

Since work was paying, we had a value resort, but this is where I see the moderates/deluxes being nice. When you're spending a lot of time at the pool, the nicer pool is a definite benefit.

After that experience, I'd definitely consider visiting at a warmer time again, knowing we'd do a lot more relaxing and resort time.

  • I wouldn't necessary be against pulling dd from school for disney but I feel like where we live schools have SO many breaks and days off! I don't think it's as bad in PA (I know I never had that much time off!). And dd already has a hard time coming back from breaks. I'd hate to add missing school work on top of that.

One of dd's friends went the week before labor day last year. They actually said it was fantastic. A lot of schools start so it's supposed to be slow, but in our area we don't go back to school until after Labor Day. She said the park was really empty and they didn't have to wait in bad lines or anything. It was hot but not terrible. So I'm thinking we may do that sometime.

  • I can assure you that no one wants to be around me (especially in public) if I'm outside walking around in 90+ degree weather.
    [-(

I am far, far whinier than both of the kids combined when it comes to heat.  Brian and I went to Disney World with his parents in July (well before we were married and had kids) and it was traumatic.

  • No vacation for us this year.  New baby and a new mini van is going to take the vaca fund.  I'm hopefully that we can go to Disney spring 2016.  Would it be crazy to take a one year old to Disney?  The other 2 will be 7 and 5 at that point.

  • I totally forgot my sister wants to do Disney in December for my nephew's 10th birthday. We shall see since we will have two 1 year olds and a 6 month old to factor in. This may end up being a Joey and grandparent trip.

Nope, we took logan 4 times before he turned 2. As long as they will nap in the stroller you should be fine.

I agree with Sarah. We had Jackson there three times before he was three and Michael was there a few times before his third birthday as well.

I have such great memories of them being there while they were little. Jackson's first real "run" was up to pooh bear at Animal Kingdom. It was so sweet.
