Who do you have for car isurance and what is your deductable?

Re: Who do you have for car isurance and what is your deductable?

  • Right now we have Geico. Full coverage on 2 vehicles. 250 deductable for 180 a month, that seems a bit expensive to me.
  • We pay $103/month for two cars with a $1000 deductible. OP your deductible is quite low. I bet a higher one would help your rates. We are both in our 30s, which helps in our state, and have perfect records, but also live in a city with some theft risk.

We always get rental coverage. It's controversial from a MM standpoint but I've been in two major car accidents in my life and it was such a lifesaver. Renting a car for a month while insurance stuff gets hammered out would be a nightmare.

We pay our annual in full every year to save money (cheaper than monthly payments) and we put money back each month to cover the expense when it comes up.  We have a $1,000 deductible and save $80/month total for two cars (full coverage policy).

If you raise your deductible you will save money, just make sure you have enough money in your e-fund to cover it in case something happens.

Also, some insurance companies partially base your rates on your credit score, so if you need to work on getting that up.

ETA:  We are in central Ohio for pricing comparisons.  We also have clean driving records, no accidents and only one speeding ticket that may have fallen off my record already.

  • Ours is through travelers - $1,000 deductible on one and $250 deductible on the other (boo - our lender requires it).  We pay $108/month.  It's bundled with our home insurance.

We don't have renters coverage, but that's mostly because we could carpool if one of us was in an accident.  We work a block and a half from each other, and we really could be a one-car family if we wanted to.  Being a two-car family is one of those luxuries we splurge on.  Our hours are similar, but any given week one of us usually has to stay late one or two nights.  We have two cars mostly so the other person isn't inconvenienced when that happens.  But yeah.... if one of us had an accident, we could absolutely carpool for a month or two and get by fine.

I might have renters coverage if the carpooling thing wouldn't work for us.

  • We have Progressive, with a full coverage policy and a $1000 deductable. We pay every 6 months because it ends up being cheaper that way, and I think we pay around $730 for 3 cars. When we moved to Georgia our insurance rates went way up, and while we could probably find a company that is a little cheaper we've been really happy with how they've handled issues we've had with DH's car so we're planning on sticking with them.

We have Allstate with a $1,000 deductible.  We pay semi-annually, about $500 every six months for full coverage for both cars, but when the next payment becomes due, we've elected to drop to liability only, so hopefully we'll be paying a few hundred less.

  • Man, I forgot how much this stuff varies state by state. I was super proud of finding $103 for two cars!

Thank you, Atlanta, and your 16+ lanes of traffic!

Seriously, though - I feel you on that.  I never lived in Atlanta, but just being a GA resident made our rates higher than living in TN or AL.  I guess insurance companies figure that all Georgians drive through the 75/85 interchange at one point or another.

Haha, Right?!? I feel like a lot of drivers here are crazy too, which doesn't help. We live in the northern suburbs of Atlanta, and avoid driving anywhere near the city like it's the plague! Coming from Denver (where traffic during rush hour resembles Atlanta traffic at 2am) that was a huge adjustment. I used to love living in the heart of Denver--I think I'd go nuts if I lived in downtown Atlanta!
  • Thanks Guys! I may just raise the deductable for a lower rate.

  • We have Esurance with a $500 deductible. Full coverage on the truck and liability on the Camry. We have the towing and rental car added in with that. We pay $175 a month now, should be going down more soon since its been a while since I've gotten a ticket.

  • We pay $108/month including our renter's insurance. It will go down in June when my 2008 accident falls off. Off the top of my head, I don't remember our deductible, but I think it's $500.

That's in central Missouri. I had been on my parent's policy still based out of St. Louis and just moving it to my current address saved like $15 a month.
  • We have Allstate with a 500 deductible. We pay 92 per month for DH and I with 2 vehicles. ... Before we were married we were each paying that much for the same coverage.

We have Progressive Insurance, $250 deductible. For two cars, full coverage we pay $102 a month. It lowered after we both were over 26 and when we got married (saved us $20 a month). We live in Colorado and have been with Preogressive for 10 years. Aldo, that rate is not bundled with homeowners insurance because we found a better deal with another company.

ETA: when quoted for a $500 or $1000 deductible, we would only save about $5 a month, so it didn't seem worth it to us.

  • We use State Farm, bundled w/ homeowners insurance and a personal articles policy.  My car is approx. $430 for 6 months; full coverage w/ a $250 deductible.

    H's truck is approx. $450 for 6 months; full coverage w/ a $0 deductible.

The reason we pay to keep our deductibles so low is because this town is TERRIBLE about hit and runs.  Seriously, my car has been the victim of 3 hit and runs in different places around town.  Every time it costs several hundred dollars to fix and I got tired of paying a higher deductible.  People suck :-P

  • We have Erie Insurance with $100 comprehensive & $500 Collision. Not sure what the prices for just those coverages are.
  • I knew I shouldn't have opened this thread!  I am green with envy, lol.  I live in NOLA and we have some of the highest car insurance rates in the country because there is a high percentage of uninsured drivers.

Despite being over 25 and no accidents or tickets within the last 3 years...I pay $180/month for one car with full coverage, rental insurance, and a $100 deductible.  I have Progressive and that $180/month also includes my "pay in full" discount.  Otherwise, it is around $205/month.

I keep a low deductible because the difference between a $100/deductible or a $1,000/deductible and all the other choices in between is actually quite negligible.  Less than $10/month difference between the extremes.  Plus, NOLA drivers are horrific and I regularly drive in the most challenging parts of the city...ie the downtown and French Quarter.

I have been in two accidents just in the last five years.  The one 5 years ago was my fault (eek!), so the low deductible came in handy then.  The one last year was the other person's fault...but their insurance company yanked me around for over 3 months before they finally paid the claim.  They weren't even arguing that it wasn't her fault, they just kept stalling as long as they could and making vague excuses that they needed to wrap "this and that" up before paying.  Again, thankfully my deductible was only $100...since it took me over 3 months to get it back.

  • We have $250 comp and $500 collision deductibles. Our premium is $415/6 months with Geico (my H has 1 accident that was forgiven). We also have rental car coverage--- it has more than paid for itself.

When comparing, also look at liability limits as those impact rate as well.. and some companies actually discount the higher limits.
  • we have $250 collision and $100 comp and pay around $600 every 6 months for 2 cars.  I guess that's around $100/month

  • USAA.

We have a personal property rider and our 2 autos on one policy. One car has full collision and comprehensive as well as glass (it's a 2014 minivan) and the other car (Buick regal 2003) only has liability coverage. We also have emergency road side assistance for both cars.

We pay $72 per month. So around $430 every 6 months.

  • @MommyLiberty5013, my DH is former military.  Do you find that USAA has much better rates than other auto insurance companies?  I've been wanting to get a quote from them, but my DH lost the "form" they need and hasn't gotten around to ordering another one.

I also want to get a quote from them on homeowner's insurance.

  • oh man, we pay $175 a month for 2 cars with a $500 deductible on each car. we live in a state where insurance is not required. and unfortunately I have a 1 year-old accident on my record and H has one that *should* be gone this year since it's 3 years old.

we are working towards getting enough put aside to pay the annual deductible, but this year, with my accident last year, it just wasn't possible.

there is no way we could be a one car family, H works 3am-11am and I work 8am-5pm, it would just never work.

We pay $150/month for 2 cars in HCOL. I think our deductible is $500

We have Amica and we choose the dividend option so that way we get $ back at the end of the year if the company does well.

We formerly had USAA for H's auto and a policy on my engagement and wedding bands. We did not find their pricing to be competitive and their customer service was downright horrendous. We had several months where they double charged us or debited our checking account the wrong amount. It was a nightmare to get them to fix their mistakes.

Honestly, I have never shopped around on insurance rates. I have been a USAA member for 15 years now via my dad. We are loyal to them due to their customer service and quality of care. Over the years, we have had claims and my dad/mom have had claims and so has my sister. They have just been great on all accounts.

Even if they saved us a few bucks every month, I still wouldn't change.

We also have homeowner's with them. Our mortgage lender loved that we had USAA as a homeowner's company.

Never ever had any trouble with them at all and we have CCs, banking and insurance with them. We also use their online billpay, online banking and mobile banking.

We have moved a lot and they are so fast in making updates to policies. Our auto policies offer bonus coverage for RENTAL cars if you have collision and comprehensive. So, we never have to buy rental company insurance plans.

To be honest, and I never say this about a company, I find it a pleasure to call them.

  • We have State Farm and pay $900 every 6 mos for full coverage on two vehicles with $1000 deductible. We have clean records, but our rates go up every time we move. We've lived in 3 states in 3 years, so it's an ever-increasing expense.
  • $2350 for the year with Citizens for two cars. One is an 2014 SUV and a 2010 car. $500 deductable. This is bundled with our homeowners. Michigan has the highest rates in the country because of unlimited PIP benefits and it's a No-Fault state. This is actually a good rate, we have no dings on our driving record, great credit and live in a nice neighborhood. Another reason auto insurance is so high is because of all the fraud.
  • We paid $2340 this year for renters insurance (with a rider for my engagement ring, a family heirloom jewlery piece, and our wedding bands), and our car insurance.  I believe our deductible is $500 or $1000, we went back and forth so much I forget.  H wanted a $200 deductible and with the rate difference it basically would make it so that we would need to get in an accident every other year to not waste money.  I was having none of that!

I pay our insurance in one lump sum but transfer a monthly sum into our savings account and then pull it all out at the end of the year.  Luckily we just moved so our car insurance is going down $400/year!!  We got a refund check for $132 for what is left on the year and we will really reap the benefits next year.
  • Oh and I have just recently learned that going through an agent is NOT a guarantee to get the best rates.  I have always used an agent and assumed that it how I could get it best.  When we got married I told H "go ahead and call Amica and see what it would cost but I know that I will get us a better rate because I work with an agent, it will just be better"   Well...I was wrong by hundreds of dollars!!  And I had a conversation with someone recently where they saved thousands (their cars, kids cars, homeowners etc) by going out on their own instead of with an agent.

YES. This. Our realtor is also an insurance agent, and since he's awesome we got quotes for auto and homeowners. The homeowners was pretty consistent across companies but we found car insurance for half the price of any of his quotes out on our own. Not from an Internet only or sketchy company, either, from a solid, respectable, longstanding organization with great ratings.
