Iowa

Republicans: I'm so pleased it wasn't Trump who won. Mike Huckabee dropped out.

Democrats: Dead heat for Clinton and Sanders with 90% of votes in. Wow. I didn't think it would be this tight. Martin O'Malley dropped out.

Re: Iowa

  • I heard!  I'm not really not into Cruz.  They are expecting Trump to win NH.  I'm so excited sanders and clinton are so close together.  I had a feeling that would happen. How weird would it be that sanders gets Iowa and NH?

GAWD I heard Hilary won by a coin toss - is that for real?!

ETA - these caucuses confuse me.  She only won 1 delegate on a coin toss.  Winner is not yet determined on the Dem side.

  • I've been jumping up and down that Trump didn't win and Rubio was super close to him.  I am so relieved.

Trump is 100% winning NH.  It would have to be a HUGE upset for him to not win.  I think Sanders will win here too.  Hilary hate runs crazy strong here.
  • On one hand yes I'm so excited Trump didn't win yet on the other hand I'm not really loving that Cruz won either.

  • read an article where there were 6 coin tosses in Iowa and Hilary won them all - what are the chances of that?

    1 in 64. 1.56% or .0156
  • The Carson camp is riled up because allegedly some Cruz people told the people gathered in their precincts that Carson was discontinuing his campaign and therefore they shouldn't vote for him.
  • Can someone explain the "coin toss" thing?  I don't understand.  Why would there be a coin toss?

I think Carson is being a whiny baby once again.  I can't imagine he's worth the Cruz camp's attention.  And if they were going to "sabotage" him, they could have come up with something that wasn't so strange.  But he's not worthy of campaign tricks- distant 4th in Iowa and polling very badly in the next state.  If Cruz is going to screw with someone, it's not going to be Carson.
  • Oh and no one said Carosn was "discontinuing his campaign", they said he was taking a break from the trail.  If they said he was dropping, that would make more sense, but taking a break from the trail is what's so strange.
  • I am so pleased with the turn out. Not only did Cruz win when the polls said Trump was in the lead, Trump barely beat Rubio. A teeny tiny bit of faith has been restored in American Republicans. I still dislike Cruz but I really dislike Trump and would take Cruz anyday.
  • I think another day or two, and Rubio would have beat Trump actually.

I had no idea how contrastive that state is!!!  Only like 1,200 Democrat votes, but almost 200,000 Republican votes.  Was I seeing that correctly?  I kept thinking I was misunderstanding.
  • I just read 171,000 Democrat voters and 180,000 Republicans
  • Ok I am going to take back what I said previously.  I just read that there were actual tweets from Cruz folks spelling out this rumor.  I still don't understand why they would go after Carson and I don't believe it actually affected him since he was polling at what he ended up getting, but it's dirty and underhanded.

I can't stand Cruz either - to me it doesn't matter if its trump or cruz.  I think cruz is slimy and don't trust him.  I would rather have Rubio than cruz.  The coin toss is so stupid. I don't understand Iowa and the way they vote in this thing.  I'm starting to think politics is rigged and it doesn't matter how you vote.  Are there other states that do this coin toss thing?

From what I read - don't quote me I'm not the politician guru that you are :)  BUT its when the precinct is tied between the 2 candidates so they determine the winner based on the coin toss.  Apparently 6 precincts were tied between bernie and hilary so they had to coin toss is up.  Otherwise I really think Bernie would be the winner in Iowa.  He's calling it a tie regardless.  Also, I heard that he wants all the raw votes recounted.

  • That's so stupid.  Why can't they have a tie in a precinct?  Such a strange voting process

Did you watch any of Cruz's acceptance speech?  40 minutes of bizarreness.  I swear, if anyone had heard that speech before voting, he wouldn't have won.  It was slimy and just WEIRD

I don't know how many delegates Iowa has but 6 of them were tied.  Its the stupidest way of voting I've heard of.

  • I think the precincts were tied, not the delegates.  Totally bizarre though

Yes, I think there may be some legitimacy to the Cruz/Carson fiasco. Some people posted a Tweet on FB from Steve King (the IA politician who endorsed Cruz) of him saying "Carson has dropped out." If a "well-respected" person in your state stated something of that nature, why would you doubt them? And, when you're actually in the physical precincts, it's not like you're going to have the time or the ability to fact check things very well or quickly.

I watched about 40% of Cruz's speech and I was pleased it wasn't Trump, so I was starting to mentally swap over to Cruz as someone to support on Super Tuesday. But, then this story erupted this morning and now, I'm not sure about Cruz at all. I agree with much of what he says and stands for; however, if this story is true, then I waiver on whether or not Cruz is truthful.

If he's not, and if Carson doesn't do well between now and Super Tuesday, my vote will probably go to Rubio, despict me not liking the whole Gang of Eight stuff.

I did a quick google search on caucuses and it looks like around 10 states caucus so I'm wondering if they also do coin tosses.

I said I wouldn't get emotionally started on a presidential race again and I'm really not trying to, but alas here it is.  NH is next Tuesday.

Fox had a "live" count going on online of all the votes for all the counties for both the Reps and Dems. With the Reps it became pretty clear after about 50% of the votes were in that Cruz was in the lead and would likely stay there.

But, it was literally too tight to tell between Clinton and Sanders.

So their live votes, I noticed too that the Reps had well over 150,000 total votes (it broke the 2012 record by like 60,000 votes). But the Dems only had like 2,000 or 3,000 total votes. As counties reported, you could go to each one and view the actual vote breakdown. For Clinton and Sanders numbers were in the hundreds (or less) for each county.

  • I was looking at the primary data from 2012, and I have determined that caucuses are dumb. All the states that have caucuses have less than 5% of eligible voters participate will regular primaries have closer to 20%.

The idea of caucuses annoy me, because what if you are a new mom whose baby usually eats or sleeps around 7pm on voting day? What if you are old and sick and you really need some rest? What if you work at 3 or 4 in the morning struggling to put a meal on your families' table and need to be in bed early to work safely the next day? It just seems so inconvenient to anyone who doesn't work 9-5.

EXACTLY!  I would have to take off from work to go caucus because I work in the afternoon/evening.  I vote in the mornings.  So stupid

Then why do the final numbers say less than 1300?  Is it how the Dem caucus works??  Do the individual precincts count as 1?

funny you mention baby.  On the news last night they were interviewing a mom that had brought her 2 year old to the caucus last night for Hilary.  She said she couldn't stay too long because it was so unorganized and wasn't safe for her kid.

I was not too surprised with the Republican results because it's a state highly populated with religious people. I sort of expected a Cruz win. However, I was surprised to see how close Marco Rubio did compared to Trump.

Iowa has not chosen a U.S. president in 16 years, so I guess it's still anyone's game.

Hillary tied with Sanders shows her incompetence. A 74 year old democratic socialist is right on her tail. I just read that she won over a COIN TOSS? I thought it was a joke until it was confirmed on my local news station.

Regarding Cruz or Cruz's campaign making things up about Ben leaving. Bill O'Reilly said he believes the rumor may have been started by CNN. On his show last night, he said he will investigate and have a follow up story on his show tonight.
