    Ditto kellbell.

Besides I would never get a dog from a breeder. I was just curious.... they're beautiful dogs.

Why did you say ditto kellbell?

That's what really threw me off.

A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • TIME OUT!

First of all, how the heck are you guys copying my post and pasting it so that people know what you're responding to? That would make things a lot easier for me.

Second of all, there definitely was some sass in some of those posts- so for people to say they weren't "jumping down my throat" (for lack of a better word) for referring to it as a breed- is bull. I understand this is an internet forum but seriously... the wording can be misconstrued.

Also, I apologize for using the term Labmaraner and I'm guessing most of you girls are regulars on this board but honestly have you ever seen me post on this board before?.... how would I know what you guys accept/don't accept.... If I have a question I'm going to ask it- I shouldn't have to lurk for a month before I ask....

  • imagekjohn149:
umm.... who said I was adopting anything? Please read my OP and notice that I'm merely asking for personal experience.

    She was asking rhetorical questions.

I noticed that you haven't posted on the Nest much.  Generally its a good idea to give all of your background info up front in your original post.  If you had included in your OP, I'm not looking to buy one, but genuinely curious, you would have gotten a different type of responses.  Normally when someone comes on here asking about a whatever mix its because they want to buy one and don't have information on bybs, which is why people immediately go to that issue.  Most people do not read all of the responses before answering a question, which is why they didn't see your follow ups.

    HTH.

One rule of thumb: Lurk for just a little bit before posting.  On any board.  We're actually quite nice here compared to other national boards.

  • Hit the Quote button at the bottom of the post that you are referring too.

You can take their posts to you however you like, but if you think is brutal than the interwebs might not be a good place for you, especially not The Nest. Lurking for a few days, and getting to know the tone of a board is a GREAT idea, that way you know how to phrase questions that you want to ask, and what the general ideas are that are supported by the board.

  • Answer to your question:  What do we know about the mix of breeds?

It's a mix of two breeds that could have any combination of characteristics from either of the original breeds, and should only be acquired through a rescue group.

That's as good as we can get.

    image
    Love.
  • Nobody can tell you what they're like because they're not a breed, meaning they don't breed true to type. Any combination of two different breeds is liable to give you a wide spectrum of variety. The dog would be getting one set of genes from a Lab and one set of Genes from a Weim. There's no way to know which set they'll get from any parent.

The only thing that anyone could predict would be that the dog would be big and hyper-active.

  • PS.  My first love at the shelter I volunteer at was a lab/weim mix, named Nestle: (followed by Trudy, a boxer/hound I fell HARD for)

He was 4 months old...we're unsure of his background, but he and his brother were shy and skittish...and stayed in foster families for about a month before becoming available for adoption.  I believe shyness is a fairly common trait in Weims.

Ok, I can see how you can take it as some being a little sassy, but stick around and you can see that what you got was nothing more than a little 'slap on the wrist'.

There is a quote button at the bottom of posts near reply. Use that.

Lurk for just a few days or go back a few pages and see what has been talked about and you would know this.

You will find on all the Nest Boards, not just this one, that certain things put buttons on certain boards.  Pretty much every board will recommend that you read a little bit before you post, in order to prevent a misunderstanding like this one.  Which is seriously just a misunderstanding caused by a lack of information on both sides.  My best advice is to go back, start a new post and introduce yourself, then just read some of the posts that are made each day.  I think you'll find this is a nice group of really helpful women (and some husbands!) who love to meet and talk with other responsible owners.

  • FWIW, I am fostering a Lab/Boxer mix - two VERY high energy breeds.

Sirius is adorable (pic in my bio).

And he is off-the-wall, batshit CRAZY. When I let him out of his crate, he zooms around the basement for five straight minutes before he has the ability to sit still for 1 minute for me to say hello.

He gets 4 walks a day -- and that isn't enough.

He wants to wrestle with my other dogs CONSTANTLY. They knock cushions off the couch and knock over furniture.

Will another lab/boxer mix be exactly like him? Absolutely not.

Instead of clicking "reply", click on "quote" underneath the post you are responding to.

Some of the "sass" is due to many regulars on here being very active & dedicated to shelter/rescue organizations.  These girls see the thousands of dogs (many of them overpriced "designer mix" dogs) end up in shelters & are very passionate about preventing this.

The first few posts were simply stating that there is no such breed as a "Labmaraner".  Not implying you should know better.

You've never told us why you're asking about this mix other than just out of curiosity.  Most people asking specifics about a certain type of dog are usually looking into getting one themselves.  I don't believe any regulars here have a lab/weim mix so they are giving you the best of their knowledge based on the two breeds & are providing you with the best ways to go about finding one.

I'm not sure if someone already said this, but your post is all we have to go on. We don't have anything else other than that post so when something isn't worded correctly ( that happens to get under people's skin ) then yes, people will jump all over you. Why don't you start a new post and introduce yourself?

Poor Dwight. Tell him to do Turnips though, Beets would be very messy.

  • As others have pointed out - "designer mutts" are a hot button topic here, since they are just perpetuating the pet overpopulation issue. No one has anything against mutts - many of us have mutts ourselves. But slapping a cutesy name on a mixed breed (labradoodle, cockapoo, puggle, etc.) is EXACTLY what breeders of designer mutts do to make them appealing to people who don't know any better. By calling a lab-weim mix a "labmaraner" you were inadvertently associating yourself with a practice most of us vehemently despise. Go back and re-read your original post - can you see why we mistook your question for wanting to possibly buy one of these?

Upon reading your follow-up post, it's clear this wasn't the case - a good lesson to give enough pertinent information in the future to avoid miscommunications!

As others have said, please stick around - this board is full of knowledge, and actually mostly nice people. We are just huge animal lovers and many of us are involved in rescue work, so it's painful to think of people supporting practices that contribute to the deaths of millions of dogs and cats every year. We may be passionate, but our hearts are in the right place.

  • I came across your post about Lab/Weim mixes. My sister owns one, she is a great dog. I think she takes after her dad who is a pure breed Weimeriner. The mother is a chocolate Lab who is also pure breed. Well, as pure breed as it gets. All domesticated dogs have been cross bred for centuries for different traits so aside from wolves, I doubt there's a "pure breed" of dog anymore. ;) The dog is black, short hair, hyper, too smart for her own good, loyal, protective, has an air of grandeur, strong hunting instinct, affectionate and very playful. She requires a lot of exercise but once you play with her (walk, play fetch, usually about an hour), she calms down and just follows you around until you tell her to sit or stay. She's also pretty strong so I can see her easily knocking over someone if they're not careful.

Are we seriously talking about this again?

Okay then, that "there is not such thing as a pure breed anyway" bullsh!t is one excuse crappy breeders use for breeding mutts. Breeding mutts contributes to the millions of animal euthanized every year. Even if the "no such thing as a pure breed" were true (which it isn't), that would not be a good reason to keep breeding the same kind of mutts that are found in shelters every. day.

    *sigh*

  • imagekjohn149:
Does anyone have one of these? Any information on the breed? Obviously I've been researching online but would like to hear someone's actual experience/knowledge.

Since it is not a breed, experiences will vary just as much as between the mutts as they do between unrelated dogs.  There is no way to predict the size, temperament, or health issues (because the breeders are not going to do the genetic tests or hip X-rays) because mutts don't "breed true" (which is absolutely fine, but anyone who pays big money to a breeder trying to make a fast buck off a mutt is crazy).

  • It's funny when old threads resurrect.  I know who bumps posts.  :op

As for the newest addition to stupidity, all I hear from that post is:  Blah blah blah, my sister got ripped off.

    Missin' my Gabe.
  • I found mine at a shelter! I can't be absolutely sure that he is a Labmaraner but judging from the research I've done on the internet I'm 99% positive! He is an amazing dog! He is an extremely smart dog with a huge heart! He learns very quickly (both breeds are known to be intelligent) and so I've been diligent about teaching him proper behavior before he starts to make up his own rules (he learned in one day that he wasn't allowed in the kitchen! And at 5 mo. he was already heeling beautifully!) His favorite things to do are to meet new people (very lab-like) and RUN (both breeds). He is 7 mo. right now and next summer will be well on his way to being certified as both a therapy dog and avalanche/search and rescue dog.

I would say that what I've read on the internet about both breeds individually as well as together is fairly accurate. Intelligent, athletic, loving. I wouldn't recommend getting a Labmaraner if you aren't an active person or an experienced dog owner. But if you fit that criteria, they will be a very rewarding companion!
