No it doesn't for this very reason

The X comes from Xristos which is the Greek name for Christ.

Besides if people want to celebrate the secular aspects of Christmas they have every right to.

It's not like Christ was born on December 25th anyways.

    werd.

  • On formal communication (i.e. Christmas cards, letters, etc) it should be spelled out.  I don't mind if people shorten it if they're typing the word on a message board/text.

I also agree with the pp, don't say XMas...it's Christmas--2 syllables either way people!

  • Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas Xmas

    I love saying Xmas.

    Xs are cool.

    I also like Xtina.

    Muahahaha.

This.  I would not say xmas out loud, it is the same amount of syllables.  However, I do see myself getting tired of typing out Christmas on the boards so I do not mean to offend, but I probably will abrev to XMas at times.

  • Wow... I have finally come across a "debate" where someone actually changed my mind. I was originally going to say that it did bother me but after this lesson I don't feel the same way. (and I'm not being snarky!)

    imageNCV2:

    Yeah it's actually not.

"Xmas" and "X-mas" are common abbreviations of the word "Christmas". They are sometimes pronounced /'?ksm?s/, but they, and variants such as "Xtemass", originated as handwriting abbreviations for the correct pronunciation /'kr?sm?s/. The "-mas" part came from the Latin-derived Old English word for "mass".[1] The "X" in Xmas is from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of ???st??, Christ in Greek (see below).

It bothers me when people say it is!

wow, I can't believe I've actually come across a reasonable person on the nest! lol

  • Yes, it bothers me but not to the point that I will take offense to it.

I am not bothered if someone wishes me a Happy Holiday or even a Happy Hanukkah.  They are trying to be friendly. I accept it as a friendly gesture.

I also dont mind a nativity scene, menorah, or any other symbol of the season being shown for the public to see.

  • Do people really not know that this is short hand?  "Xmas" is not comparible to "holidays".  It's comparible to "w/".

I don't get annoyed when people write in short hand when it is appropriate to the situation.  Saying it or writing it formally, however, makes you look foolish... (which tends to make me laugh inside)
