Did you plan your wedding around sports?

This was a huge issue in my family.  I ended up going with an April wedding to plan around football in the fall, basketball in the winter and March madness (plus snow), and Derby.  When I picked the spring wedding, we had to do it three weeks before Derby to avoid all the festivals and increase in flowers, etc.  I was curious if sports effected your plans too.

Re: Did you plan your wedding around sports?

  • Not around sports but around the summer camping/boating season. Our wedding was middle of May as the our boating season kicks off Memorial Day weekend and I didn't want wedding planning during that time.
  • I made every attempt to do so, but I failed.  EPICALLY. Sad

I have always wanted a fall wedding.  At the beginning of our wedding planning, my husband and I got out Florida's football calendar and settled on October 18, the bye-week.  Mom and I went to St. Augustine to scope out / book some venues, and discovered that my favorite reception venue had an opening on October 18.  The morning we were going to book, we got a call from the reception coordinator -- October 18 was gone.  LAME.  (This venue was really the only place in St. Aug that would hold our guest list.)

This led to a flurry of phone calls, wherein we must have changed our date 5-6 different times, depending on the availability of our RD, ceremony and reception venues. It became apparent that November 1 was the only date on which ALL venues had openings.  November 1 also happens to be Florida's biggest regular season game, Florida-Georgia.  (And, this game happens to occur in Jacksonville, about 10-15 mi. north of St. Augustine.)

So, yeah.  Fail.  But our F&F are the best, and they came out in full force (after some 'gentle' ribbing about our choice of date, of course.  Wink)  The Gators gave me a wonderful wedding present that day, though: a 49-10 win over our biggest rivals!

  • I had a spring wedding specifically to avoid football season, yes.
  • Absolutely. We got married in early May, so we avoided football and basketball seasons.  We actually went to the courthouse early so we could meet the deadline to apply for student+spouse football tickets.

Side note: my friend got married in 2006. She set the date of April 1st.  I told her that was the day of the Final Four and jokingly said that if the Gators made it, I would not be a bridesmaid.  We all laughed b/c it seemed like a longshot.  Well, the Gators made it and I was superpissed.  I was still in the wedding, and i only missed part of the game. There was a TV at the reception thankfully.

  • Got married on November 11th which was Alabama's bye week and also was the date of the first Alabama football game back in 1892.

"Ew. I've read all of two posts from you, and you stink like rotting garbage."
  • We did. I wanted a fall wedding so bad...until we got season tickets for OSU football and couldn't pick a date that fit my love of OSU and his love of Texas. We didn't do a very good job of avoiding basketball either, though - our wedding date will definitely fall during March Madness most years.

  • We are only really college football fans so I knew a spring wedding was all I could have (it's too hot in the summer).  He also proposed on UGA's off week.

  • We did think about it, but we set out date long before sports schedules (NFL and college football) came out, so we couldn't schedule around anything.

I did INSIST on having the TVs in the wedding venue bar turned on, though, since there was college football and MLB playoffs on.  I guess a lot of brides request that the TVs be turned off.  :)

  • We tried, but we had too many schedules to plan around PSU (me), Purdue (me & DH), and USC (DH) and a particular venue we wanted. We also needed a fall wedding for a variety of other reasons and there was just no way.
  • We got married in May so I knew football wouldn't be an issue, but I never took into account the NASCAR All-Star race being the night we got married.  I survived, though.

I never did count on the NBA playoffs, either, but the Magic played on the Thursday before and the Sunday after our wedding.  We went on our honeymoon over a week later and I kid you not, one night was spent in the hotel room flipping between the Magic-Cavaliers NBA Eastern Conference Finals game and Florida in the Women's College World Series.  I take my sports seriously.

HAHA I would have been the same way.

  • Yes! We had our wedding in October and planned it on a Friday night so it would not interfere with Football. We actually stopped off at Gillette Stadium during our Honeymoon. Smile
  • We definitely avoided the fall because I refused to get married on a Buckeye game day. We had to plan around College World Series and the Olympic Swim Trials when they were in town, all the hotel rooms filled up too quickly.
  • We planned around college football, I would of loved a fall wedding but I would much rather have people show up! = )

    I think that's pretty cool!

  • We picked our date that was the only day our two favorite hockey teams played each other. They only played once that season....so we were praying for a saturday or sunday and we lucked out.

Our wedding colors were the teams colors, and we planned on going to the game after the wedding.

  • It was really important for us to not get married during football season. Luckily the time of year was not that important to me so I planned around the venue. However, we did end up getting married the weekend of the draft so I went to the venue before the wedding that morning and had them place 2 tvs at the bar so everyone could watch...the Eagles made their pick while we were having our first dance and I was so mad I missed our pick! Stick out tongue

  • As a side note; our friends who claim to be huge Mountaineer fans never even consulted the schedule before they picked their date.  DH & I were pissed because he was in the wedding, so I kept flashing him the score while I followed on my phone Devil We do not invite them to watch the games with us anymore.

  • We avoided fall because of football.  My cousin, on the other hand, is from Michigan and got married during Game 7 of the Stanley Cup (neither the bride nor the groom cared for hockey).  My uncle saved a FORTUNE in bar tabs because everyone went to the bar adjacent to the reception venue where there were TVs and paid for their alcohol!

  • Unfortunately I didn't take into account playoff hockey.  We got married Memorial Day Weekend, so we could have gotten married on Sunday.  But we chose that Saturday, and the Red Wings played that night.  Not a huge deal, cuz the bartenders had a TV so my friend (who is a HUGE Wings fan) could get score updates.
  • Not at all. My brother had a sailing race and threatened to not show up, but other than that it wasn't an issue.

  • I did not. We had it on a husker game day and had friends purposely not show up to prove a point that football was more important.  Also, note the game was over before our wedding even started and they didn't go to the game.  Ridiculous!  Just shows that they really aren't that good of friends.
  • I wish we had. We picked a December wedding date. We booked our ceremony and reception sites. Booked our photographer and florist.

Then we went to reserve a block of rooms, and realized it was the weekend of the Army/Navy football game. We had a HELL of a time finding a hotel to block rooms for us.

And traffic was GRIDLOCKED the day of our wedding.

  • We chose summer to avoid football and basketball.  Also, b/c I was still in law school when we got married, it made sense to get married during the summer break.

  • We planned around college football season. Heaven forbid my DH miss his UGA games and my family would have been super pisssed if I got married during a WVU game.

  • Not really. I needed about a year to plan and since I got engaged in august there was not too much to work around sportswise at that time.

  • Yes.  We wanted a fall wedding but I refused to give up a Saturday of football.

So I planned it on a Saturday when the Hawkeyes were away (at Illinois).  We won :)

I also had my hair done SUPER early in the morning (for a 6 pm wedding) so that I could sit and watch the entire game.  I have priorities.

  • I had to make sure not to plan our wedding around any kind of hunting season. My hubby is a big time hunter (duck, deer and goose) so we had a spring wedding which was fine for me. The only thing I didnt think about was the Rockets being in the playoffs versus the Lakers during our honeymoon. My hubbys fav basketball team vs his least favorite basketball team= having to be back to our hotel room by a certain time our whole honeymoon.
  • Yes!! We had weekend on a BYE week, because us and all our friends have season tickets. There was one groomsman who was a douche because his team was playing during the reception. He actually left earliy to go watch it.
