What are the worst gifts you've received from...

Re: What are the worst gifts you've received from...

  • My MIL is a really good gift giver, actually. Maybe even better than my own mom, who usually gives cold hard cash and something little to open up.

If she starts to get me anything to do with babies or grandkids though that will be another story Confused

  • Some of pp's gifts are really awful!  I guess I am pretty lucky.

For my bridal shower, DH's cousin mailed me half the parts to a used blender, packed in an old crock-pot box.  We just let it slide- I like to think that it was a mistake and she mailed us the wrong box.

My MIL is very thoughful, but some of her gifts are a little off-the-mark.  She gets me anything and everything that she can find that's lilac scented because she thinks I love lilacs.  I don't.  I used to wear lilac perfume because DH loves the smell of lilacs, not me.

  • I was just informed I should post here, because I was talking to some friends about my recent Birthday gift from my MIL. She only seems to listen part way when I say things. Like when I say that I like jewelry and vintage things, she hears necklace pouch. What is that you might ask...well here's a photo:

Yes she made that for me, no I do not wear it. Though if it were a bit larger it would be the perfect place for a condom. Also a creepy doily got thrown into the bottom of the box. Why? I just don't know.

It wasn't for the holidays, but when we lost our son MIL sent me a canning spoon (it's suppose to fit into jars better) with a note that said now you'll have time to can.

    OMG.  I'm so sorry.

  • Our family's tradition is to open wedding gifts in a small group with breakfast the morning after the wedding...

So when I opened the stand mixer, I could show excitement. The first hand mixer after that, somewhat excited, after all it was on our registry. The third hand mixer, they didn't expect excitement. My sister approached me after words and said she noticed the box was taped shut, maybe I should check to make sure it wasn't a reused box. No, it was a reused hand mixer...still dirty from my MIL's aunt... I thought maybe I could research it and find out how old it was...it was 15 years old. It's still sitting in my shed because I'm so confused (we only got married this sept)

  • SIL gave me file folders for my "because I like to be organized"

MIL gave me ovualtion predictor kits so that I would know when was a good time to get pg.  This was after explaining my fertility problems to her.

  • My inlaws usually give really thoughtful, nice gifts, so I was a little shocked last Christmas when I received:

A silver chain necklace with a HUGE bulldog figurine on it.  Like, "gangsta" style big.  Now, we have a bulldog, but I do not wear (nor do we own) anything bulldog-themed.  I have no clue why they thought I would wear something like that.  I had to sit there and try to nod and smile as they described how cute it would look with a sweater while my DH almost choked he was laughing so hard.  I would have thrown the necklace at him but it probably would have done serious damage!

  • My ex's Nanna was pretty well known for terrible gifts, like dodgey things she would pick up from the dollar shop and from around the house.

Last Christmas she gave me a plastic shopping bag full of half used shampoos and conditioners and lotions that she had taken from hotel rooms.

    The ex got shoelaces.

  • I was the proud receipent of 2 interesting gifts. Both from the same person, my MOH's mother. At the shower, they had chipped in together to get me a gift card, GREAT! the card that came with the gift card, not so much. It was hand made. By that I mean, it was constructions paper with pictures and and words of wisdom TAPED to the the construction paper. Fast Forward to our wedding, same family-we got a pretty vase from them, that I think was regifted. It was in a Victoria's Seceret box, with their store name covered up. The take the cake moment with the gift, is the "card" that came with it. They CUT my wedding ivitation apart and wrote their names on it! I mean I know my invites ended up in the trash or recycling, but did I need to actually see the destrcution? Oh, just remembered this one, the one groomsman didn't get us a gift. BUT his name was signed to the card we got from his parents. He is 28 years old! My BIL didn't get us anything either, and one of DH's uncles didn't get us anything either. I am not expecting a lot, BUT is a card too much to ask for?
