Are you anti-artficial sweetener?

I don't know if this is really a green topic.

But I can't stand the stuff!  First and foremost, i don't trust the stuff, especially ones like Aspartame.  And, I don't like the taste or aftertaste.

It really bothers me that it is in SO MUCH STUFF.  I avoid it at all costs but when I was pregnant, I found out that things like most gum has some kind of artificial sweetener, so I ended up buying Glee Gum online (our natural stores around here are awful).

I have accidentally bought a lot of stuff recently with artificial sweeteners and it drives me crazy.  You know the instant mix packets?  Why can't they make those WITH sugar!

Re: Are you anti-artficial sweetener?

  • I hate artificial sweeteners!  When I was in elementary school I had a sugar free frozen yogurt it made me sick; I have hated artificial sweeteners ever since.
  • Yes, but I don't buy or eat much that would have it in there!

I admit I do buy sugar-free gum, but I don't have that much of it so I haven't throught much about it.

I don't drink mix powders or sodas, so I'm all clear there. Sometimes I do have diet soda with my booze on a rare occassion I go out to a bar. I just can't handle the sugar. The artificial sweeteners suck too but at least they don't make me hyper!

  • Artificial sweeteners have always bothered my stomach. Back when i ate Yoplait yogurt, i always had to buy the regular because the Lite made me feel so sick. I stick to regular sugar (but limit it as much is as reasonable) and honey.

And I really don't trust that whole Stevia thing. Any food that has a trademark is suspicious to me.

  • I avoid it for myself and my children at all cost. I gave up on chewing gum, lol.
  • I completely avoid them.  I'd rather have a little bit of real sugar.

  • I completely avoid them.  DH *loves* Coke Zero, I hate watching him drink it.  Aspartame freaks me out.  Why would I want to drink a chemical that tricks my brain into thinking what's I'm drinking is sweet.  That's just creepy.

  • I use Splenda in moderation. 1-2 packs a day in coffee. And I drink crystal light so yeah I guess I do use artificial sweeteners. I don't go overboard, but I do use them. I can't drink plain water unless I am exercising. I  need to have flavor so I buy the crystal light and dilute it to where it is really just flavored water.

  • I avoid them.  The freak me out, the upset my stomach, and they taste awful.
    nothing
  • Artificial sweeteners, especially aspartame, trigger migraines for me (and many other migraine sufferers).  I cut them out of my diet and haven't had a migraine in a looong time.  It is also a known problem for IBS sufferers, and I hate the taste.

  • I have a choice I will choose regular sugar however I do not avoid them completely.

  • The only place I can't avoid them is my toothpaste. And we don't have natural paste nor baking soda for sale anywhere near me so I am stuck.
  • I am. They are disgusting and they skeeve me out, so avoiding them is no hassle at all. I don't do "diet" or "sugar free" foods ( obviously whole foods are sugar free, but I mean things like Jello).

  • I can't stand the taste of them!  Ick ick ick.  My FIL just made a rhubarb crisp using that instead of sugar and I refused to eat it.

For those interested in a good gum, I love this one!  It's sweetened with Xylitol.

  • Anti, for a variety of reasons.

First, the aftertaste is gross to me.

Secondly, no matter how many times people reassure me that the lab rats in all those studies consumed X times their body weight in artificial sweeteners, it still freaks me out and makes me wonder about the long-term effects.

I don't freak out over small amounts (Trident gum or consuming it unknowingly), but I definitely try to avoid it.  I'd rather go thirsty than drink a diet soda.

  • I don't like it in real food, but I don't mind it in junk like soda and gum*, in which I really shouldn't be partaking anyway. lol. I do get annoyed with how food or juice will be labeled "low sugar" or "low carb," but you don't see the inclusion of aspartame or splenda until you look more closely. I'm an avid label-reader, and even I get surprised sometimes (fortunately, before I leave the store).

*eta: I actually HATE sugared gum. It gets hard and loses its flavor so quickly.

you don't have baking soda there!? What do people bake with?

Stevia is artificial? I thought it was the natural answer to the fears about aspartame, splenda, and sacchrin.

I think it tastes likeshit anyway, so I haven't really researched it.

We also don't have cream of tartar. Or Crisco. Or molasses. Unless you shop at the American store and OMG the prices there are scary. Like triple what you would pay in the states. At least. Not to mention there aren't that all many in the country.

Local/traditional baked goods are way different than American baked goods. So they don't miss the stuff we rely on. For me, I just modify my recipes or leave those out altogether. Baking time usually involves a wing and prayer. LOL

  • I actually love the stuff and even though I've tried to clean up my diet, this is the one area of HUGE weakness for me. I've got to work on it...and soon.

  • I am anti-aspartame and splenda.  Splenda breaks down as chlorine in your body.  Ick.  Not to mention it is WAYYYY too sweet for me.

I have been using Truvia very sparingly, reg. sugar and honey.

I found this on Stevia-  I think its still not FDA approved. http://safety.lovetoknow.com/Dangers_of_Stevia

  • I am not against it. It is in some of the products that I eat/drink.
  • I use it in limited quantities.  Mainly Splenda in baking, since my mother and uncle are diabetic and I usually only bake "goodies" for company.

I wouldn't say I avoid it, per se.  But I do try to stick to "whole food" items.

For those looking for sweetener alternatives, look into barley malt. I've taken to using this in baking for half the sugar and I've enjoyed good results.

  • After finding out that sacarine can cause cancer in mice, I felt the urge to do away with all artificial sweeteners. It's easy to avoid if you eat whole foods, and I rarely have anything to drink not water or booze, so no sweeteners there. I do get creeped out by eating chemicals, no matter what they are meant to do, so I try to stay away. My one vice: splenda in my coffee. It only takes two packets vs 30 of table sugar....

I found this on FDA's website:

    http://www.fda.gov/AboutFDA/Basics/ucm194320.htm

Based on its review of information and data submitted by industry, FDA has concluded there is no basis to object to the use of certain refined Stevia preparations in food. These refined Stevia preparations may be lawfully marketed and added to food products sold in the United States.

I was thinking it had to be approved now since it's popping up all over the place, unless it was regulated as a dietary supplement instead of an additive or considered just a food.

  • Not only do they trigger really horrible, vomiting migraines for me (I spent the day of my brother's college graduation suffering from a half a cup of artificially sweetened punch the day before), but I am just flat out allergic. I'm practically a canary for those--I can pretty much tell by the 3rd sip of there is artificial sweetener in something because my ears start ringing and itching.

What really irritates me, along that line, is how yogurt with artificial sweeteners is pushed so heavily these days and there are always sales and coupons on those, while the ones sweetened only with sugar rarely go on sale or have coupons, even with the same brand name.

Stevia, btw, is not artificial. It's a plant, and the FDA can't regulate that, so that's why it isn't FDA approved.

  • I am generally, but I'm MORE anti-me being fat, so with my sweet tooth that requires some Splenda which I actually (begrudgingly) like.  I don't pretend that it's good for me, but I know being so incredibly overweight is worse.
