Dumb Question Amnesty Day - what's your question?
I've decided to declare today Dumb Question Amnesty Day. (Because I have a dumb question.) We all know that Nesties know everything. So, what's the thing you've always wondered about but were afraid to ask? Surely, someone knows the answer.
Re: Dumb Question Amnesty Day - what's your question?
Everything I have ever heard is that you should NEVER flush tampons
My guess is that as long as they are in uniform, they have to be in the complete, approved uniform. Like, they couldn't go out in their uniform pants, but just throw any t-shirt on. Though seems like contact would still be okay, since you can't see them. Maybe the guys you saw just choose to wear the glasses or don't ever wear contacts or something? Wiki talks about "Birth Control Glasses" but doesn't really answer your question: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GI_glasses
My question is one I've had for a while.
It is about when people post "woot". On facebook or on here or whatever.
Who says woot? I don't get it. No one I know screams WOOOOT when something good happens. Now, I have heard "wooo" or "woo hoo" or "yeehaw" or whatever, but I have never, ever, heard anyone say WOOT IRL. So, why do people type it out that way? It perplexes me and kind bugs me.
Where did it come from? Who made it up? Does it mean something other than "I am typing out a word that shows I am excited"?
TIA.
DH says WOOT! all. the. time. But I have no idea where it comes from, and he's a giant geekburger.
lol I think it's from online gaming? Like 'pwned'? I heard it was originally "wow loot!" and over time morphed into "woot!". Who knows if that's true or not!
Ooh, I actually know this one...sort of. It's a term that started with gamers and has kind of spread into main stream vernacular. I'm not a gamer, but I actually do say it out loud in a kind of tongue-in-cheek way, much like I say "word" or "fo sho"
But it happens all the time! surely, that many military guys/gals don't all opt for glasses all the time. And the wiki answer just says that contacts aren't allowed for training exercises...but doesn't say anything about why they'd wear those glasses and not contacts for trips home and days off and such. (?)
Okay that makes sense...DH is a gamer and he also says "pwned" all the time. Dork.
I actually found something else that says after basic, they don't even have to wear the standard issue if they don't want to (they just can't wear anything that's not relatively plain). So the guys you've seen are either all in basic AND not allowed to wear contacts even when out in the world, or they really are just choosing to wear them.
this post cracks me up.
what does ETA stand for when used in a post? i've asked before but i've forgotten and it drives me nuts! i always think of it as estimated time of arrival but that doesn't fit. something to do with editing??
ETA = Edited to Add.
Which I will now do... ETA: My stupid question. Does anyone else have one of those ipod radio signal sender things for your car? And does anyone else have an impossible time finding an open frequency to actually play ipod music on? I'm so frustrated. It finds stations, but then they overpower the ipod music. I found one station that works, but only south of 2222. I'm trying to figure out if there's something wrong with my car antennae, or the signal sender, or if it just doesn't work.
More than you ever wanted to know about the origins of woot! from your resident geek girl.
w00t= we own [the] other team in l33t speak or gamer lingo. So, you know, when you and your online buddies trounce the other PvP team, everyone goes "w00t!!!1!!" Using zeros instead of ones is a l33t speak convention.
...which got adopted as woot in the non-gaming online lingo. Only now it means something like "hooray!"
I prefer my friend's version of le woot! because it's fun and confuses people.
I totally get what you're saying; I have the same problem. It is so frustrating! There are just too many stations that get picked up.
Do you say this in a jaunty French accent? Because that just might make my day.
I've wondered the same thing, thanks for asking!!! I've also never asked about 'MUD'. I always read it as "made up drama" becuase that seems to be what it is used for but I have no idea if that's the actual anagram.
I always feel dumb when it comes to freezing/thawing meat. How long can you freeze it for? Do you thaw it in the fridge or the microwave? I feel like my mom just left it in the sink to thaw all day while she was at work- is that safe? (my animals would probably eat it that way though).
I usually just avoid freeezing it
...actually, not always. Depends on your sargent. BIL's sargent will not allow regular glasses - ever. It's military glasses only. I think it was the same as pp: when you're in uniform - you wear 'the' uniform. When BIL is in civilian clothes he can wear whatever glasses he wants. I think it really just depends on the rules of your higher ups in the military.

I have frozen chicken for up to a year, and it's still edible. Depending on how long it's in your freezer, you can end up with freezer burn though.
Fridge or microwave are the safest ways to defrost. I usually run under hot water first, to get the packaging off the meat, and then use the microwave. I'm just not enough of a planner to put things in the fridge that morning or the night before.
I bought one of those and returned it because of this very problem! All the research I did before I returned it indicated that finding an open frequency is a pretty common problem.

Sozay--thaw the meat either in the fridge or in COLD water, replacing the water every 30 minutes. Personally I try to avoid microwave thawing because I hate meat in the microwave ever.
Military glasses--maybe after being in the military and letting them foot the bill for the glasses, they just don't bother to get contacts or civilian glasses?

leaving it in the sink all day during the summer = bad idea. it probably gets too warm. doing the same thing in the winter when its 30 degrees out, it probably stays cold enough. i think all day is too long though. here's a link too that says no more than 2 hours in cold water:

thanks! Yeah, I grew up in Alaska so temperatures were a little different
Thanks guys! At least it's not my fault that it doesn't work!
THANK YOU.
Wow, I cannot tell you how much woot bothered me. Actually, it still does, but is slightly alleviated by the fact that at least I know where it comes from.
What is pwned?
I believe a 4-way stop is taken in the order of arrival.
