How important is diversity (kid related)?

Re: How important is diversity (kid related)?

  • Does she like pubs, like pub & grills, or pubes?  That word is next to va-jjs, which I think is vah-jay-jays, right?  That's what led me to wonder about pubs.

To say nothing of "liking" pubes and vaginas and buttholes on a social networking site...

  • I guess the moral of this thread is that no matter what Liza will end up marrying a black jew with a mexican stepmother and LIKE IT!  And that coloring a jesus face in 1st grade makes you fvcking PISSED when the curtains don't match the carpet?

Don't you mean, "when the curtains don't match the chunch"?

I dodged a major bullet with that one...

Mulva, is keeping her in daycare another year and starting at PreK-4 an option? The whole gulf coast needs to figure this school thing out. I have 2 year old parents already flipping out about charter school lotteries and if their kids will test into Lusher.

I could keep her in daycare another year.  Her daycare is associated w/ another catholic school in the area.  But I don't like the PreK3 teacher there.  She hugs me a lot.  It gets on my nerves.

NOLA's educational system is crazy.  $12K for private school.  For a LCOL area, that's a LOT.  That's one of the predominate reasons I never moved back.

The COL is higher here, but the cost of private schools still blows me away. We were looking at a couple in the area for preschool (because the majority of the non-religious preschools in the area are at private schools) and a year of preschool, 1/2 day for 3 days a week, runs between $14K and $18K a year. K-12 was running around $30K. It blew my mind.

It's really crazy. It's a sad state of affairs, IMO.  You can really see how we're elimating the middle class. If you don't have money, expect a sh*tastic education.

Ha.  We're already talking about whether our kids will be able to get into the LSU Lab School.  And we're a couple of years from having kids at least.  I don't know what the hell we'll do if we can't get them in there.

I do think diversity is important.  I am extremely thankful that I didn't grow up in the town I was born in, every time I go back.  But I would still go with the better school and try to get her in activities or other stuff with a more diverse group of kids.

  • I'm not one to talk.  My kid is in a Jewish daycare. Incidentally, he's kind of whiny, so you'd totally hate him.  I would love to send him to a diverse school, but he's going to public school, and we are making our decision of where to buy based upon the quality of the school districts (among other factors, of course).  Unfortunately, the best school districts tend to be in towns with relatively little diversity.

  • When buying out house we almost only looked at the Lusher district and we are at least 3 years away from kids meaning this wont even be an issue for us for 8 years (We couldn't even afford the area.. a 2 bedroom was almost 300 which for Nola is INSANE) I just have little faith by then our edu system will be fixed. There are some amazing new charter schools out there but getting into them in a terror.

My favorite private school in the area (Country Day and Newman) where most of my friends send their kids costs is 16,160 then if you want lunch (which I think you have to) it is an extra 1,400. This ends up being almost as much as 2 years of college for me (I went to a state school)

  • Also I am very close with a lot of our parents and don't think I would ever hug one of them... she sounds creepy.
  • The only way my kids are going to private schools is if we somehow end up in an area where the odds are high that they'll get shot walking down the hall.  There's no way I'd pay $16K for my kid to drink juice boxes and learn ABC 123.

COL is high in NJ, and I consider M's school a bargain at $12K.  Unfortunately, every time I turn around, I'm writing another check for "special" required activities or fundraisers.  And they aren't fundraisers you can easily say no to, because they make them appealing to the kids, and you are the jerk parent if your kid is the only one who doesn't get to go home with a seasonally-themed rubber duck three times a year, for example.

If I added up all the extra money we spend for activities, uniform shirts, and fundraisers, it would easily add another couple thousand to the cost.  So if you are looking at private schools, be sure to ask how much fundraising is done and what the "extras" add up to.

I think the pre-K is less the 16,00 is 1-12. The issue is these schools really are the best and offer the methods I strongly believe in such as project approach and Reggio.

I admit, my program ends up being 10,000 a year for most but we do have a sliding scale and a 12 month full day program.

  • Fallin, I always felt the same way, and it was really tough for me to turn away from public school, but for M, it really was the best option.  He had so much he was overcoming, and ESL in the public school not only was Hindi based and badly implemented.

Well no, Will will not be going to any of the private preschools, even if we could afford it. The on-campus preschool through Lorne's school is about the same though, sadly, so it looks like we're going to have to drive farther than we wanted to in order to get him somewhere affordable. And when we eventually move we'll be looking at school districts and such to help determine what area we move to. Lorne and I are both pretty smrt and we're the product of public schools and public universities.

  • Oh. Fallin's comment was probably directed at Aliza. Nevermind me.

  • We just toured two preschools for Maggie. Both are part time programs and are at churches, and are about 1100 per year. We'll be a public school family but just for kicks I priced the fancy schmancy country day school here and their kindergarten program is 12k. Oooof.

I don't know.. since "no child left behind" I pretty much hate public school. There are very few areas where I'd send my kid to public school.  Here, it's the skanks.  I think who your kid ends up becoming has a lot to do w/ the crowd he/she hangs w/.  I don't want my kid mingling w/ the public school skanks.

The one Liza will end up in is about $6K/yr.  That's pretty high for here, but about what we pay in daycare anyway.  The HS tuition at this school is about $10K (god only knows what it will be when she gets to HS).  It seems crazy to me. But, seriously, public school here is not an option.  Though, consider I only pay $2K/yr is property taxes. So, at least I'm not really paying much for our sh*tty public schools.

  • I kind of want to found an educational approach based on the belief that kids are in need of a lot of control and discipline who should do the structured math, science, spelling and reading lessons taught a teacher who is a dictatoral instructor, not a co-learner.  The Fallin Method (TM).

  • These prices are making me sad.  The private schools around us are north of $20k a year.  That's on top of the $15k-$20k you spend annually on property taxes, so it's a no-go.  I have a friend in the city who spends $30k a year on pre-k.  I'm totally serious.

Yes.  I'm a public school graduate and would love to not pay for private schools. And it's not even a matter of moving to another parish.

The school we'd like to use is around $4k/yr for all grades.  And non-religious.  But supposedly really difficult for non-LSU grads to get their kids into.

  • Those of you saying public school isn't an option - why, exactly? Do you think the private schools have better programs, better teachers, more resources, etc.? Are all the public schools in your area like Dangerous Minds?

  • I don't know why I never considered the fact that pre-school would cost money.  Doy.

In New Orleans your child will end up in a school that is falling to the ground. The teachers will either be under qualified or brand new out of college (Mostly from Teach For America or Teach Nola) and your child will learn nothing not to mention your second grade buddy will most likely know all about drugs and own a handgun.

Our school system was so bad I don't even think anybody really attends Orleans Parish schools. Recovery School District isn't much better so your basically stuck with a charter.

Fallin, they do have it, that is basically traditional education.
