Re: Free Form Friday

  • This a post and run. I will be back after 12p as my new school schedule has me at school in the AM and at work from 12-4p on Mon, Wed and Fri.

I have a weekend of cake making and three birthday celebrations ahead of me. What are y'all up to?

  • I'm going to my parents' for the weekend to finish up their tax return (I filed an extension).  DH can't come, because his friend is going to be in town.  Somehow, I got roped into driving his truck and pulling a trailer - with an ATV - back to my parents.  I've never pulled a trailer before, so I'm a little nervous that my first time is by myself.

I have been trying to find low-cal snacks for work.  Last night, I dipped some pretzel twists (the thick, stick-shaped kind) in chocolate, and a serving of 5 has 125 cals.  I think they're going to be a great treat this afternoon... if I can wait that long! :)

  • I am SO excited with the way the style shoot from last week turned out!!! Since I didn't shoot it, I can talk about it, right?

I was worried, because this photographer is very new, and the day before the style shoot, there were LOTS of loose ends. But we pulled it all together, and he really did a fabulous job. It was such fun working with him, and I know he's going to do great things!!

Although I still think Mack and I look NOTHING like Johnny & June Cash, I think the styling came across, and it was a blast. We blogged about the experience with a few of our favorites, and most of you know how to get there. But here's a link to the photogs blog, where you can see lots of them! :)

I can't for the life of me figure out how to do a PIP, so you'll just have to trust me! :)

  • All right.  Deep breath.....

Bill came home last night asking if I would like to move to North Carolina.  A major company is looking for a director and his brother thinks he should apply.  So, after crying at Chickfila when he mentioned leaving before the school year was out, I told him he had to apply for it and, if he got the job and we had to live apart for a couple of months, then we would just do it.  I cried mainly because this is a great group of seniors and some of the last children from my favorite families are seniors now; I told him that I had to see them graduate (which was already making me misty-eyed and graduation isn't even until the last day of May).  I'm not 100% sure how I feel about this and I'm not even sure how I would go about getting teaching credentials in another state!  Am I ready for this?

  • Chelsea, I was just on my way back over here to rave about the shoot! It turned out so amazing - you were way wrong to be so critical of yourself the other day. You are SMOKIN'!!!!  Kudos to you for putting yourself in a position to feel vulnerable, and I hope it paid off for you bigtime and that you know how gorgeous you and Mack are on that side of the camera :)

Oh Julie... what a big decision!

I think you're wonderful for encouraging him to apply. It could be an incredible opportunity for you both. And FWIW, North Carolina is beautiful, and the Charlotte/Wilmington areas are SUPER cool.

Before we lived in Texas, my Dad stayed behind in SoCal for 6 months to finish a project and sell our house. It wasn't fun, but it's totally do-able. I think it's so refreshing to see how attached you are to your students!

I agree, you're wonderful for encouraging him to apply and NC IS beautiful!  Getting certified in NC shouldn't be too difficult since TX and NC have reciprocity.  My DH and I (FI at the time) just spent this last school year apart since he got a job out here and I finished up teaching (and planned a wedding!) in FL.  We tried to see each other once a month (even if just for a three day weekend) and we managed to make it so I know you'll be able to!!!

    Chelsea,

When we were living in NV in 1983, we had to move back without my dad and it was hard but we did it.  That's not the part I'm worried about.  I have never been away from my family (just my dad and brother now) for more than a couple of weeks at a time.  Also, I told Bill a long time ago that if a great opportunity came up, I wouldn't hold him back.  I mean it.  It just took me by surprise.

You are a fantastic wife, and Bill is lucky to have you.

I know it's still early... right now just a possibility. But just keep in mind that at a certain point, all plants have to be re-potted to stay healthy. The pot they were in might be what they know, and where all their plant friends are... but they won't grow anymore if they stay there.  Just praise the Lord that you have some notice, and a husband who will support you staying behind to finish the school year with these students that mean so much to you. It could turn out to be really fabulous timing!

  • Ditto everyone Julie, I think that's great--both the opportunity and the way you were able to come to a decision together.  And of the all places, NC ain't too shabby!

I finished the book club book last night.  Oh how I wanted to bawl my head off but Ben was right there reading over my shoulder so I held it in.  I may read parts of it again Saturday while he is at work so I can have my cry

We are looking at that table today but other than that, I don't have much of a weekend planned. Which is fine.  I had a chance at Rangers/Angels tickets but I can't get anyone to go with me because it's too dang hot!

Angie--wow, no way would I try to pull a trailer.  That would be a disaster!  :)

  • Julie,

It's great that you are ok with him applying. DH and I have had a few of these conversations already. Especially with my lack of promotion in this area.

I missed the past couple days so I have some back up to pick up on.

AW: We are doing renovations on the kitchen today. We somehow lucked out and found the orginal builder of the house so he is doing the work, plus he is a friend of a friend's so he's doing it crazy cheap! I can't wait to see it when I get home today.

Also, we bought a new dining room table from this hole in the wall place. The table is marble top and we like it a lot. I'm happy cause we saved a bunch on it and DH inspected it and said it looked like it's decent quality.

Weekend plans: Pool party at our house for our wedding party. One last Thank you for all they did. We can't wait!

  • Julie - I can only imagine the mixed emotions.  It's exciting to move to a new place, with different weather, culture, etc.  It's also scary to move to a new place and finding a teaching position, etc.  I think it's awesome that you are pushing him to apply.  You just have to let go and see what happens.  It could be very awesome.

Angie - I pulled a trailer once - with a boat on it.  It wasn't too bad.  It will be better once you get out of the metroplex.

I am picking up the book club book this weekend.  I am really looking forward to reading it.

  • Thanks, guys!  I've been to NC twice--once it was awesome, the other time not so much.  However, I'm good with this if it happens for Bill as there are some possible life style changes if this works out.  Plus, I would be close to possibly the best school in the nation to get a Masters in Classical Studies (Ancient Greek, which I will have to learn, and Latin).
  • Julie most everyone else has said it but good for you for encouraging him.  DH really wants to move to Boston.  I have told him I have no problem with this but that we have to wait until SD is out of high school since we don't want to move that far away from her while she is in school.

Angie, I've also driven a tailor, with a boat, it was super scary at first but once you get use to it it does get easier but I don't think I want to do it again anytime soon.

Deepthi, yeah for kitchen remodel!  I would love to do some major changes to ours!

I think we are going to the Rangers game tonight.  Tomorrow is chill day and tomorrow night having dinner with some friends and then Sunday is another chill day.  It's been a while since we got to just chill most of the weekend so I'm looking forward to it.  We'll probably end up doing little things around the house but I'd rather do that than be busy, busy, busy!

  • Tomorrow we are going to go to an engagement party.  It is for one of my BM and I am so happy for her!!

Then I don't think we are really doing much else.  I am excited to have a relaxing weekend since we have so much stuff coming up soon!

  • Julie - just to echo PP, NC is great! What a great oppurtunity for Bill and you, I hope it turns out how you wish.

This morning I had a history class and Intro to Women's and Gender Studies. I needed an elective and it sounded interesting. The class is okay, a little too radical for my taste but still a good exercise in expanding my thought processes.

The best part though is that the teacher handed out some papers and asked us to pass them around. I turned around to pass the paper to the girl behind me and it was my middle school best friend. We have seen each other one time since eighth grade, so it was a shock. We were very best friends but drifted apart when I moved an hour away and neither of us could drive. I kind of felt like we were meant to enter back into each other lives as we don't have the same major or minor and both only took the class as an elective. choosing the same class period out of the four offered.

  • Julie- it's much closer to NYC as well ;)

As you all know work has just been super fabulous and well everything came to a head today so I would appreciate some T&P's as I have absolutely no idea what the future holds.  Thankfully DH supports me 110%.

  • Jaymi - Hang in there, and take care of yourself first, because nobody else will.

I just at my chocolate pretzels, and they were amazing.  Next time I think I should use milk chocolate, instead of semi-sweet, but they were still delicious.

  • I'm sorry Jaymi!  I hope everything works out for you!

T&P girl! I hope everything turns out okay!

I am heartbroken for a stranger. The woman I mentioned a few weeks ago that had been trying for four years and got pregnant just found out the baby stopped growing after the last ultrasound. I don't understand why life is so unfair sometimes.

    Jaymi,

I know that your situation has been less than desirable for a long time now so I'll keep you in my thoughts but I hope you are feeling some relief from being free (?) from the whole deal.

  • Jaymi - T&Ps for sure!

Leslie - Awesome about your middle school best friend.  But, so sad about the person with the baby.  It makes me sad.

I just read an article about fertility that was on yahoo.  It makes me kind of sad.  I'm not 35, but if we start TTC, I will be close to 35 when we do.  I feel kind of stuck.  I'm not 100% sure I want to start TTC, but then I feel like by the time I decide, my chances of conceiving are significantly decreasing.

Sounds like great opportunities for both of you!!!!

We've moved cross-country a few times for DH's job, and it isn't easy. But when it's a step-up that opens doors....and shows that all of the hard work is paying off -- totally makes it worth it.

I echo PP's thoughts -- that NC is a great place to move! It could be a LOT WORSE......

I am pretty much in the exact same situation. I'm 32, almost 33, and I definitely feel like the heat is on. I have a hard time even remembering that I'm old enough to have a child (hahaha), much less nearing my "expiration date". It gives me anxiety.

I'm not exactly free yet- it will depend on how the meeting with HR goes and I don't know exactly when that will be.  If things can change, I'll stay.  If not, then adios.  It's freeing and yet scary because I don't have another job lined up, so part of me thinks this is stupid but like Angie said you have to take care of yourself.  It's not ideal financially but we will be fine.

My GYN had all 3 of her babies after 40.  One of our attorney's wives had one at 42 and another at 45.  My old boss had her first at 35.  Heck, my grandmother had my uncle at 38!  I would not say by any means that 35 is too old anymore.
