It's Thursday!

Good morning!  It's recycling day here.  GR residents, have any of you used your recycling points?  We haven't yet.

Re: It's Thursday!

  • We have gotten two free steak dinners at Brann's so far.  I was at John Russo's Wine shop a few weeks ago to pick up a bottle for our annv. I then realized there were other bottles I wanted, so I told the guys...I'm going to go home and redeem my recyling rewards for $10 off. I will be back later this week."  I got home and found that they were all "sold out."   I was so mad at myself.

There are fewer and fewer rewards still available. I hope they restock soon.

If you want a rain barrel, stock pile your points. For 8,000 points you can get a free one from that tree hugger store in Easttown (I think the name of the store is something like Tree Hugger)

  • I want rewards for recycling! I have to pay monthly to have a small recycling bin.  Totally jealous of your big blue ones and rewards!

Me too!  I have to pay money for a tiny bin and they will only pick it up 2 times a month.

AlternaTickers - Cool, free Web tickers
  • I am annoyed with amazon.  I ordered some parts for my breast pump (that I needed like yesterday).  I paid for 2 day shipping.  They are estimating my package will arrive in 1 week.  Grr.

  • I've used my points at the Twisted Roster before. I have a lot saved up right now. I should check to see what I can use them for again. It's been a while.

  • Oh, I can use some of my points to get my wedding set fixed. Yay!
  • We have never cashed in our points. I like seeing them get bigger. :D
  • We have used them for entrees at Derby Station, which has now become one of our favorite Sunday places.

    Yay for recycling points!

  • Aloha!

We're back from Hawaii.  We had a great vacation and did/saw/experienced a lot of really great things.  But now I'm terribly jet-lagged and trying to catch up at work.

But I wanted to stop in and say hi.  Hope everyone is well and I didn't miss anything too exciting!

  • Aloha Kasa!  Can't wait to hear about the vacation!

And I want recycling points. :-P

Remember how I was going to start to book hotels for NZ?  I think we're going to rent a campervan instead and I'm incredibly excited about that.  I'm going to be a slightly homeless hippie for 3 weeks and it's going to be awesome.

That will be fun!  We met a couple of slightly homeless hippies in Hawaii.  They were on our lava tube tour with us.  They're from Indiana and spending four months in Hawaii, staying at hostels, hitchhiking across the islands, and finding work when available.  They were very interesting to chat with.

  • Juli: you'll be a nomad!  Awesome!

Kasa, welcome back!  I can't wait for you to rest up and share details.

I have been banking for a rain barrel.  But I'm worried that we're on track with a lot of other recyclers, and they'll run out by the time we all get to the 8,000.  Right now, we're at 2607.  GRKaters, where are you (my other point builder) at now?

Mira, recycling in GR is only every other week (so about twice a month) too.

  • Henry and I were invited to join friends at Gym    (don't want this searchable) boree this morning.  And as much as I think those places are kind of weird, he had a blast.  He was grinning the whole time.

  • GRSP - get on WMEAC's mailing list for their rain barrel workshops- they are free. Don't use up 8,000 points.

    http://wmeac.org/water/rain-barrel-video/

and we have receive 2800 points so far.

  • Thanks!  I forgot about that. I think I am/was on their list.  Hm.. signing up again.

Guys, what the name of the big party supply on 28th st near Target.  It's not Party City, is it?

I think it is, actually. Next to the newer Aldi?

  • Sometimes the lack of common sense of someone I deal with on a regular basis amazes (and completes frustrates me.)   I think sometimes I'm way too nice in not pointing out the fact that she doesn't get something isn't my fault, but the fact that she can't put two and two together.  Sometimes I want to look at her and say "are you stupid?"

whew...I know I sound b*tchy but I had to get it off my chest so I don't do that with her.

  • Good to hear you had a nice vacation, Kasa!

Juli - I am super jealous of your campervan adventure. I want to rent one for a camping road trip next summer so bad!!

GRsp- We are not bankers, but our total is 3397. Throw some phone books in your bin! Last week's pick up weighed 36 pounds, though normally it is around 25 pounds.

If they do run out before you hit 8000, WMEAC will help you host a rain barrel making party for free. The barrels might not be as pretty since they are old Coke syrup barrels. But hey, recycled and free!

  • That's the one, Katers.  It is Party City, and I live 10.01 miles from it, which was why it wasn't coming up in my 10 mile search.

GVSU, vent away.  Unless it's about me.  Then shut up, you b*tch. ;)

  • Hoektastic - Love the idea about the phone books. I'll have to add that in this week. We're sitting at 2933. We also take my parents recycling also since they don't have a service where they live that I know of.

Juli - Campervan sounds like so much fun that I think I'm going to add it to my Vacation list.

GVSU - Thanks for the link. DH has wanted to have a barrel for a while now.

  • Today's weather makes me glad that I planned to make Ravioli Soup tonight. Warm and hearty soup will feel good tonight.

Yup - Party City.  We were there last night actually, making a return.

We initially bought 3 costumes at Target and 1 at PC for our family (yes I'm including dogs in our family because I am THAT ridiculous).  Total cost was $91, which was kind of way above what I had wanted to spend ($50 for everyone).

Then I went home and checked Target online (through Amazon).  I bought 3 of the exact same costumes + 1 better quality of the one I had bought at PC for $63 (with free shipping over $50, boo ya).

    Online Shopping, FTW.

  • Hoek, you guys are recycling monsters!  I'm not competitive, but you make we want to step it up a bit!  We average 21.5 pounds, but I think we were a little late to join the party.

I want to make some roasted corn soup for tonight in the crock pot, but I'm on day 3 of soak and scrub from our Mac and Cheese experiment earlier this week.

Mmm, we've been enjoying the soup weather too.  Spicy Peanut Yam is on the agenda for tomorrow, Spicy Black Bean Chili and Winter Squash Soup were earlier this week/end of last week.

  • Juli - Would you mind sharing your recipe for the Spicy Peanut Yam soup? That sounds so good.

GRsp - Our massive recycling probably means that we consume too much. We get the Sunday paper delivered and I think that adds a couple pounds. We need to work on reducing!.

  • Here ya go: Spicy African Peanut Stew

Last time I made it I used my immersion blender on it, cuz I felt like being destructive.  It didn't get nice and smooth, I think because of the chickpeas.

This is one I actually prefer: Spicy African Yam Soup

I end up adding more spices to that one.

But I have the ingredients for the first one on hand, so we're going with that one. :-)

  • GRSP, if you have gunk to remove on the bottom of the crockpot, put a layer of salt on the bottom of the dish, fill it with water in the dish and put it on low for a bit.

I always use the salt trick to remove gunk from the bottom of a pan.

How, I'm guessing the gunk is all over the dish - hopefully if there is enough salt in the water, it might remove some of the gunk on the sides.

  • I got the bottom stuff off with baking soda and vinegar.  But the sides.  Are hanging tight.

Good tip on the salt, I've never heard that.  I'm going to give it a shot.
